Day of Repose: 16 June

Q: You spent sixteen of your eighty-eight years in prison.

Elder Saint Justin Pârvu:  Yes, but those were the most wonderful years, because if not for them, I wouldn’t be what I am now. Know that man doesn’t know how to arrange his life in freedom. He’s very unstable and influenced by everything around him. And if he’s forced against his will to form his character, to follow a certain position and line of behavior, then begins the suffering that sanctifies him.

Orthodox Christianity wouldn’t be Orthodox Christianity if it hadn’t gone through 200 years of persecution. If it hadn’t passed through the whole Middle Ages, and right up to our day. Because Christianity has always had to bleed, if not here, then there. Christianity is still bleeding—and continues to live from generation to generation. After all, the blood of the martyrs is the seed of Christianity. And the life I led during those years was perhaps the most fertile and beautiful, because all those sixteen years I was moving from death to life and from life to death. And I experienced my entire evolution, which is extremely beneficial for a man being formed for life.

To the chosen Confessor of Christ, the adornment of the Church, who on the altar of the Romanian people offered himself as a whole burnt offering until his advanced old age, the Prince of Romanian Orthodoxy, who in the last days faithfully guarded the Church of Christ, drove away the blasphemers with the sword of love, and found the lost sons, the one who, with the mantle of mercy, delivered many from troubles and sorrows, and like a beating heart, through prayer, awakened many consciences to the knowledge of God—let us sing to him with heartfelt longing: Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Ikos 1

With what tongue and what words sufficient shall we begin, Father Justin, to praise your deeds and your wondrous life, through which you glorified Christ, we who are unworthy to speak of the greatness of your deeds or to offer fitting thanks for the love and struggles with which you labored for us, to lift us up from the depths of our passions and guide us on the path to salvation? We know that we would rejoice if we were to offer you not praise, but a record of good deeds, Father, for you yourself said that your glory is our spiritual growth—yet, as one who knows the weakness of our nature and sees our hope in your prayers, accept from us this praise that we offer you with love:

Rejoice, our spiritual Father, who laid your soul down for us;

Rejoice, skillful Guide, who brought many souls to Christ;

Rejoice, wise Spiritual Father, who gently rebuked those who erred;

Rejoice, Spiritual Physician, who has healed the wounds of the sick;

Rejoice, Gentle Shepherd, who has lifted many of the lost sheep onto your shoulders;

Rejoice, Tireless Athlete of Christ, who has turned many from grave sins back to the faith;

Rejoice, Fisherman of Souls, who from the depths of the sea have fished out those enslaved by passions with the hook of love;

Rejoice, Steward of Divine Treasures, who have shown mercy to the poor;

Rejoice, for you have clothed those devoid of virtue in the robe of Christ;

Rejoice, for through you the Grace of the Holy Spirit has been poured out upon them;

Rejoice, O new Apostle, who became all things to all people so that you might win them all;

Rejoice, for with the chains of love you have bound your spiritual children;

Rejoice, O God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 2

You were chosen by God, holy Father, to shine upon the world through the light of your good deeds, and behold, from Petru Vodă, like a chosen star, you rose above the lofty peaks of Mount Ceahlău, from where, like a fiery eagle of Grace, you were to raise the cross of your Romanian people to the heavenly heights, which you bore with nobility from your youth onward, guided by the righteous teaching of the Gospel of Christ, toward Whom you directed us all and to Whom we, too, sing with gratitude: Alleluia!

Ikos 2

The feast of the Holy Martyr Haralambos became a cause for angelic rejoicing and human joy when you were born of your faithful parents, Father, for from childhood until the end you honored God, following the wise counsel of your pious mother. “This beautiful and rich childhood that I experienced in these lands helped me endure many of the trials of prison,” you said, Father, as one who knew how to gather the riches of Grace from all the flowers of life, for which we praise you thus:

Rejoice, for you were born of devout parents;

Rejoice, for you were raised in the fear of God and love for your people;

Rejoice, for your mother’s teachings nourished you more than milk;

Rejoice, for your parents’ memorials and prayers guided you like a staff;

Rejoice, for you listened eagerly to the scholars of Neamţ Monastery;

Rejoice, for you also guided your brothers and friends toward holy things;

Rejoice, for from childhood you were captivated by a longing for the Liturgy;

Rejoice, lyre of Grace, who loved the divine services so dearly;

Rejoice, sapling that sprouted at the foot of Mount Ceahlău;

Rejoice, disciple of the holy elders of the Durău Lavra;

Rejoice, for until your death you bore flowers of virtue in your beloved native land;

Rejoice, chosen alpine flower of the Romanian people;

Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 3

From your youth, your soul was ennobled by the spirit of supreme sacrifice, your body adorned with the garlands of virginity and purity, and with your heart burning with love for God, you longed for the highest gifts—the perfection and sanctification of the soul, Reverend Father—so that you forsake the world and its pleasures and devoted yourself to Christ, your Bridegroom, to Whom you humbly and ceaselessly sang: Alleluia!

Ikos 3

Hearing the Word of the Gospel: “If you wish to be perfected, take up your cross and follow Me,” you were moved by the love of the heavenly Bridegroom, and sensing that your calling on this earth was higher, through God’s gift to overcome the ordinary nature of mankind, you have left your home and beloved relatives and have become one with the angels; and like the apostles, you have betrothed yourself to Christ, donning the monastic habit in the holy monastery of Durău, for which we honor you with praise, saying:

Rejoice, holy youth, unstolen by worldly vanities;

Rejoice, for by crucifying your body and passions, you chose to sacrifice yourself on the cross of monasticism;

Rejoice, for you left behind the love of your parents and the glory of the world;

Rejoice, for you sought the complete mortification of your own will;

Rejoice, for by steadfast will you extinguished the flame of carnal pleasures;

Rejoice, for you conquered the fire of the flesh and the restlessness of the body;

Rejoice, for in the monastery you showed yourself to be an example of humility and obedience to your brothers;

Rejoice, for the church was a paradise for you, and you delighted in the sweetness of vigils;

Rejoice, for you did not love rest and imitated the ascetic struggles of the saints of old;

Rejoice, for the fear of God was the beginning of your virtues;

Rejoice, you who nourished your mind with the words of the Fathers’ wisdom;

Rejoice, for the Grace of the Holy Spirit descended upon you;

Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 4

Like a spiritual bee, you gathered the nectar of wisdom and the ascetic struggles of the holy Fathers of the Durău Monastery, and like an angel in the flesh, you walked until the end of your earthly life, Father, for the monastic habit was for you an angelic garment, more precious than any imperial purple. But God was to test your soul like gold in the crucible, and for a time He exchanged the black robe of monasticism for the red cloak of martyrdom, which no angel could wear, but God Himself, the Lamb, imprisoned and bloodied for our salvation, to Whom we cry out with trembling: Alleluia!

Ikos 4

The earth shook to its foundations, and the temple of the Church was shattered once more, when Satan, through the rulers and lords of the world, plotted a wicked scheme against the Lord of Hosts to wipe out the Name of God from the earth and destroy His righteous ones. And like a red beast with seven heads, persecution was unleashed against the Church and the nations to destroy the natural order from its very foundations and establish a new occult order to rule the earth. But you, Father, as a valiant soldier of Christ, together with other righteous ones who did not bow their knees to Baal, waged war against the beast for the redemption of the Church and the people of God, for which we honorably praise you thus:

Rejoice, unconquered soldier of Christ, whom the lawless dominion did not deceive;

Rejoice, for bearing the name of righteousness, you could not bear to see your people suffering;

Rejoice, fearless soldier, for you defended the face of Christ, riddled with the bullets of the barbarians;

Rejoice, valiant warrior, who worthily entered the holy army of the Archangel Michael;

Rejoice, comrade of the angels, who together with your brothers in the cross waged war against the Bolshevik beast;

Rejoice, archangel ablaze with light, who bore serene witness before men;

Rejoice, for being inflamed with love for your fellow men, Christ clothed you with the grace of the priesthood;

Rejoice, defender of the ancestral homeland, who gave Holy Communion to the country’s soldiers on the Eastern Front;

Rejoice, guardian of Orthodoxy, who drove the wolves from the fold of the land;

Rejoice, for you have overthrown atheistic materialism, established by the God-murdering people;

Rejoice, brave heart who trampled upon the enemy’s tyranny;

Rejoice, clothed in the armor of Grace, for with the sword of the Spirit you confronted the executioners;

Rejoice, bearer of God, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 5

Silence fell upon the heavens, and the angels were filled with dread upon seeing the Church of Christ bloodied by the enemies of God, who rose up with savagery and cruelty against the Christian peoples; and the voice of the blood of Christ’s martyrs, which filled the dungeons and the crevices of the earth, rose to the Throne of God, crying out: Alleluia!

Ikos 5

Aiud, Gherla, Pitești, Baia Sprie, Canal, and Periprava—prisons and camps that became true factories of martyrs and strongholds of divine Grace, when the bell of Christ’s Church rang out the call to the wedding feast of the Lamb, to the true Sacrifice, to which you too were called, honorable Father, and like a pierced soul you offered yourself upon the Holy Altar through the word of your testimony, for which we praise you, saying:

Rejoice, glorious martyr, who loved Christ more than your own soul;

Rejoice, for though bound in the chains of passion, you overcame the chains of nature;

Rejoice, for you endured the darkness of the dungeon, yet the rays of grace comforted you even more;

Rejoice, for from the cave of the dungeon you made a spiritual manger for the Infant Jesus;

Rejoice, for you transformed the cell in Aiud into a tomb of the Resurrection;

Rejoice, for though reviled and mocked as a bandit, your soul shone with grace;

Rejoice, for your tormentors grew more weary of striking you than you were of ceasing to pray;

Rejoice, for your persecutors tempted you with enticements: “Do not give up your life and youth for nothing, but renounce your beliefs!”;

Rejoice, for you boldly replied to them: “My youth and the years since I became a monk have long since died for me!”;

Rejoice, for the prison cell seemed holier to you than the monastery cell;

Rejoice, for the fragrance of your prayers filled the heavens;

Rejoice, monastic asceticism, hidden within the martyr’s chains;

Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 6

Just as it is impossible to bring down the heavens or extinguish the sun, so it was impossible for the blasphemers of God to silence the words of the confessors in prison; in vain did materialist “re-education” attempt to undermine the foundation of truth, for it was further strengthened by the sacrifice of the saints, and you, Father Justin, strengthened your brothers in suffering, saying, “If Christ called His Crucifixion glory, should we flee from it?” To Him we too humbly cry out: Alleluia!

Ikos 6

“Those were extraordinary and unique days of sacrifice. And the pain was in seeing a man die before your eyes. This is true suffering. Suffering alone is the true wisdom that rules over man,” you said, Father, as one who, through suffering, awakened true prayer within yourself, so that you no longer felt the blows or the torments, but, burning with the joy of the inner paradise, you made your heart a fountain of love for your fellow human beings, for which, marveling, we praise you, saying:

Rejoice, apologist for suffering, who defeated the demons with the weapons of faith;

Rejoice, for in your passion, giving thanks to the One on High, you attained self-knowledge;

Rejoice, for by suffering humbly, you received the gift of Christ’s peace;

Rejoice, for your pain was silenced, and you found that of your neighbor;

Rejoice, son of heavenly love, who strove to awaken your brothers;

Rejoice, for through humility and love you made the prison shine;

Rejoice, you whom even the guards loved;

Rejoice, for at Gherla, in your dying body, you celebrated the Holy Liturgy;

Rejoice, for in that Liturgy you saw the light of Tabor;

Rejoice, for many of your comrades have gone to heaven, having received communion from you;

Rejoice, living Philokalia of the Romanian prisons;

Rejoice, you who seal the land of the Country with your blood;

Rejoice, bearer of God, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 7

Christ is risen!—the voice of the choir of martyrs resounded from the depths of the Mine at Baia Sprie, and the granite mountains leaped and danced in the light of Christ’s Resurrection; the depths spoke out, and the hell of the torturers paled before the radiance of the saints, and you, holy confessor, with your bell-shaped drills, proclaimed to all the call to the Light, so that, enlightened by God, we may sing: Alleluia!

Ikos 7

By no means did the servants of darkness succeed in extinguishing your light under a bushel, O blessed one; rather, you have illuminated the depths of the earth with the torch of your confession, and with your prayer you have melted the granite cliffs of the Baia Sprie Mine—like another Mount Sinai—and you have made the bowels of the earth a burning altar for the Romanian people; for this, marveling at you, we praise you with zeal, saying:

Rejoice, living light, who has kindled torches of grace beneath the earth;

Rejoice, true miner of Christ, who with prayer has pierced the rocks of unbelief;

Rejoice, worker of God, whose soul is purer than the gold in the ore;

Rejoice, abyss of humility, who chiseled through mountains of suffering;

Rejoice, drill of divine glory, who with the drill of love melts the rocks of our hearts;

Rejoice, for in the dark swamp of the mine, you overcame the boundaries of the mire;

Rejoice, for from the depths you carried mountains of earth, and naked and hungry, a burden too heavy was placed upon you;

Rejoice, holy priest, who celebrated the Liturgy for the Lord in the underground altar;

Rejoice, for though you had no candles or vestments, you made holy adornments from lanterns and cloths;

Rejoice, for you rang a bell from the drill bits, and from the depths you sang of Christ’s Resurrection!

Rejoice, for while burning with fever, the merciless executioner subjected you to even harder labor;

Rejoice, for when he was crushed by a landslide, you saved him from death at the cost of your own life;

Rejoice, bearer of God, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 8

The Danube Delta sought to hide its waters, unable to bear the sight of your reviled sacrifice, Father, as with crippled arms you dug through mountains of earth and, braving fierce winds, scorching heat, and bitter cold, you cut down great bundles of reeds, and your blood, flowing through the ditches, was carried by the waters of the Danube, sanctifying the land of the country and of the world; for this we bow down before your struggles, singing to God: Alleluia!

Ikos 8

God worked a most glorious miracle in the labor camp at Periprava, on the feast day of the Three Holy Hierarchs, when your cruel persecutors cast you into the frozen Delta in winter at –30 degrees, to cut bundles of reeds, but for your faith, the Lord warmed the water, and the sun shone more powerfully in a miraculous way, so that those who were guarding you were scorched by its rays; and you, Father, seeing the miracle, were strengthened even more in hope, and the power of God descended upon you—for which we sing to you words such as these:

Rejoice, O glorious Martyr, for you suffered like the Forty Holy Martyrs in the frozen lake;

Rejoice, diamond of patience, for you were not terrified by the terror of the frost;

Rejoice, for together with Father Ilie Lăcătuşu you encouraged your fellow brothers;

Rejoice, for by enduring temporary torments, you have gained eternal virtues;

Rejoice, for from the Lord you have received the gift of love for humanity;

Rejoice, for when your brother could no longer endure the beatings, you took him by the hand;

Rejoice, for you said to him, “Hold on, Moţule,” and he held on;

Rejoice, for you wept for the death of your brothers, who perished in mass graves without a cross;

Rejoice, for you deeply regretted not having died alongside them;

Rejoice, worthy successor, for through you the glory of the prison saints has endured;

Rejoice, for though you suffered greatly, you endured to the end;

Rejoice, for the Lord has granted you deliverance from prison;

Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 9

Loving suffering greatly, you truly found happiness in torment, and you valued persecution more sweetly than the freedom of life, O Blessed One; yet, having become a chosen vessel of the Holy Spirit, filled with the treasures of virtue, Christ set you free from prison and sent you so that you might win over many and bring to the knowledge of the truth those of your own people who lay in the darkness of unbelief—for which we give thanks to God, singing to Him: Alleluia!

Ikos 9

God revealed to you a heavenly vision in a dream, when, while in the dark tunnels of the Mine, you fell asleep, and at the end of the tunnel you saw a light shining; upon reaching it, a magnificent monastery rose before you, and a divine voice commanded you in your heart: “Go and build a monastery for My Saints”—with this soaring desire, like an archangel leading the host of martyrs in prisons, you left your prison cell and revealed yourself to the world as a chosen guide and true Confessor, for whom we sing to you with reverence:

Rejoice, for Christ has freed you from your chains, and you have delivered many souls from the bondage of the passions;

Rejoice, mountain of dignity, who made no compromise even in freedom;

Rejoice, fiery cherub, whose torch of teachings could not be hidden under a bushel;

Rejoice, for though you lost the years of your youth in suffering, you gained those of your old age;

Rejoice, beautiful-faced elder, to whom Christ has given thousands of disciples;

Rejoice, beekeeper of the Secu Monastery, who became spiritual nectar for the people;

Rejoice, skilled spiritual father of Bistrița, who restored faith to the children of your people;

Rejoice, for the servants of the atheist regime howled, seeing how God’s gift grew within you;

Rejoice, for, never forgetting the covenant of your comrades, you erected a holy monastery for them on your very own land;

Rejoice, unyielding fir tree of the Romanian nation, who from the Petru-Vodă Monastery faithfully guarded the Church;

Rejoice, perfect abbot, who gathered around you a multitude of monks and nuns who fulfilled their holy calling;

Rejoice, tireless Confessor, whose teachings and deeds have been proclaimed throughout the world;

Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 10

Your cell at the Petru Vodă Monastery, a spiritual paradise that blossomed through grace, revealed itself to all who came to you for help and feasted from the orchard of virtues in your soul, Reverend Father, receiving gifts of healing, fruits of repentance, spiritual honey, fragrant flowers of teachings, and countless other spiritual gifts and riches with which you served the flock of Christ, to Whom we sing with thanksgiving: Alleluia!

Ikos 10

“I am set apart from this people and live so as to share in the sufferings of mankind. I am weak, they are weak—what else should I concern myself with, if not their weaknesses?”—you said with love, Father, for this reason the world has called you the Spiritual Father of the nation, and many spiritual sons have loved you more than their earthly fathers, because Christ has given you the gift of healing—you who have turned your heart toward your neighbor—for which we sing to you with love words such as these:

Rejoice, our true Father, who has comforted those whose hearts are broken;

Rejoice, lover of mankind, for you have been a deliverer to those in trouble and need;

Rejoice, defender of Christian families, through whom many homes have found peace;

Rejoice, comfort of mothers, for you have taught them to raise their children toward the Resurrection;

Rejoice, for through your prayer you have opened the wombs of many women, and they have given birth to good children;

Rejoice, food of the poor and divine manna for those who seek virtue;

Rejoice, terror of demons, for you have been a healer to those tormented by unclean spirits;

Rejoice, for you have been a comforter even to those afflicted in mind;

Rejoice, physician without payment, who has healed every kind of illness;

Rejoice, for you have founded monasteries and hermitages for the monks to practice vigilance;

Rejoice, for in your convent of nuns you established a haven of mercy;

Rejoice, for you provided a home for orphans and a refuge for the elderly;

Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 11

“I have suffered much because of this mercy of mine”—you would say with holy humor, Father, and who can describe your love for the sick and suffering, for with the garment of Christ’s faith you clothed those naked in body and virtue, the lame and the infirm in soul or mind, and you offered blood from your own blood to the helpless, whose pain was the most precious nourishment to you, for you denied your eyes sleep, soothing their pains from the confessional, and at night praying ceaselessly for the salvation of those who, with gratitude, sing to God: Alleluia!

Ikos 11

The Church has gained you as a divine trumpet, Confessor of the Truth, for the crown did not adorn kings as your confession of faith adorned you, and like a candlestick in the darkness of apostasy, the torch of your teachings shone, and it was a marvelous sight to see how an old man put an entire hidden army to flight, snatching the speaking sheep from the mouths of the ravenous wolves; for this we too praise you with fervor, crying out:

Rejoice, son of the Most High, who wore the confession of faith as a crown;

Rejoice, overthrower of ecumenical heresy, who made yourself like St. Justin Popovich;

Rejoice, for though you were alone, you were not diminished in spirit, but with humility, like a new Mark, you revealed yourself as a discoverer of the truth;

Rejoice, sword of fire that has cut away the chaff of heresies;

Rejoice, granite rock against which the waves of the antichrists have crashed;

Rejoice, enlightened angel, who has freed us from the darkened kingdom of the one who is dark;

Rejoice, you who have revealed to us in advance the snares of the Antichrist’s seal;

Rejoice, you who have thwarted the occult plans;

Rejoice, light of the young, for you have delivered them from the snare of misleading teaching;

Rejoice, for having the image of goodness imprinted within you, you have transformed the sons of injustice without words;

Rejoice, for you have been a spiritual solace to Romanians abroad;

Rejoice, drop of purifying lime, who has clarified the waters of this turbulent age;

Rejoice, bearer of God, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 12

You feared leaving this world poor and destitute of the salvation of the many, knowing that it was more necessary for us that you remain in the flesh, and even into your advanced old age, with great toil, you never ceased to warm the hearts of the afflicted, even though illness and cancer had overcome your frail body, but the Lord, seeing your soul perfected and purified in the blood of suffering, called you to join the host of the Confessors in heaven, to which you eagerly responded: “Here I am,” O holy ascetic, to whom we too cry out with one voice: Alleluia!

Ikos 12

Who can properly mourn your departure from among us, Venerable Father, for thousands upon thousands of people came to your passing from all corners of the world to touch and bury your sanctified body? Yet we, knowing the multitude of healing gifts with which God has glorified you, and recalling your wonderful words in which you told us that the saints do not lament but are honored, we do not weep; rather, trusting in the grace of your prayers, we honor you with words such as these:

Rejoice, holy martyr, for even from your hospital bed your body was shown to be a spring of myrrh;

Rejoice, for though your whole body was overcome by suffering, your soul was already with the One on High;

Rejoice, for, ablaze with light, death seemed serene upon your face;

Rejoice, heart ablaze with three colors, in which the love of heaven will beat forever, unquenchable;

Rejoice, for the earth leapt for joy, having been sanctified by communion with your body;

Rejoice, holy testament of the Church, for you have built the house of your soul upon four pillars;

Rejoice, infinite pillar of repentance, lifting us to heaven through the tears of suffering;

Rejoice, burning torch of prayer, consuming the defilement of sin;

Rejoice, ladder resting in heaven, which grants our prayers;

Rejoice, ship of unity, through which we sail the stormy sea of life;

Rejoice, miracle-working tomb, from which rivers of healing spring forth from the earth;

Rejoice, for we run with faith to your tomb, and swiftly receive help from you;

Rejoice, God-bearer, Confessor Justin!

Kontakion 13

O Holy and Most Venerable Father Justin, we bow before your noble struggles, through which you unceasingly bore witness to Christ and loved Him to the very end, even at the cost of your life. Father of our hearts, as you receive this gift now, be our intercessor before the Merciful God for us who run to you for comfort, and warm our hearts, which have grown cold with passions, so that, inseparable from you, we may sing to God with one heart: Alleluia!

This kontakion is sung three times.
