By Nicholas – member of the Western Rite Vicariate, a part of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese in America
Did you hear the news? A group of Russian intelligence agents were welcomed on Capitol Hill to spread propaganda about Christian persecution in the Ukrainian War. These dastardly villains were operating under the direct orders of arch heretic Patriarch Kirill of Moscow. Quick – alert the DOJ!
Actually, a group of American Orthodox Christians from multiple American Orthodox jurisdictions went to Capitol Hill to meet with their elected representatives on 18 November 2025. They were there to speak on behalf of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians who are suffering very real persecution. Christian persecution that is funded by American tax dollars, and flowing directly out of previous American actions in Ukraine.
What? American Orthodox Christians, you say? Yes. American Orthodox Christians – a fact lost on many because of the purposefully slanted coverage of the event. In an article published by The Hill titled White House to meet clergy with ties to pro-war Russian Orthodox Church, journalist Laura Kelly’s coverage of the event gave the impression that the delegation was fresh off an Aeroflot flight from Moscow. Two U.S. Representatives also got into the frame expressing their outrage, one going so far as to send a letter requesting AG Pam Bondi open an official investigation. Let’s read some key sections of the article below:
Lobbyists and clergy with ties to the Russian Orthodox Church, which has been a staunch backer of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, are campaigning this week on Capitol Hill and meeting with the Trump administration.
Among the clergy lobbying Capitol Hill this week include representatives from at least three churches that hold ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. This includes the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, which in 2007 entered into “canonical unity” with the Russian Orthodox Church, preserving the outside churches’ independence but viewed as an “indissoluble part” of the Moscow patriarch.
Some House Republicans are requesting Attorney General Pam Bondi investigate whether the Russian Federation or its intelligence services have sought to recruit, leverage, influence or compromise U.S.-based Orthodox churches with ties to Moscow.
“It has come to my attention that ROCOR [Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia] is actively seeking to expand its political influence in the United States, including through an event reportedly scheduled for November 18, 2025, aimed at lobbying Members of Congress and their staff,” read a draft letter addressed to Bondi led by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), which was shared with The Hill while additional House Republicans are signing on.
“This development raises legitimate concerns that ROCOR or other Russian Orthodox jurisdictions could serve as vehicles for intelligence collection or foreign influence operations directed at U.S. policymakers.”
Bishop Irinej of the Washington-New York and Eastern America Serbian Orthodox Church is also participating in the delegation. The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Porfirije, was in Moscow in April and met with Putin and Patriarch Kirill, a key Putin ally accused of being a veteran of the Soviet-era spy agency, the KGB.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is an offshoot of the Russian Orthodox Church, headquartered in Moscow and under the leadership of Patriarch Kirill.
In August 2024, Ukraine banned the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), a move that largely targeted the church’s offshoot in the country, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarch.
The move was criticized by the United Nations, the pope, and human rights organizations as an assault on religious freedom, and some analysts raised alarm that it was an overreach by Kyiv in its push to disrupt the ROC’s influence and operations in Ukraine.
See what the author and Representative Joe Wilson (along with other Republicans who signed the referral letter to Bondi) did there? Russia, Russia, Russia… Orthodoxy equals Russia, equals enemy of the United States, which makes the Americans participating in this delegation dangerous Russian intelligence assets and/or traitors. Evidently American Orthodox Christians all take a personal loyalty oath to Putin.
Here is a picture of these dastardly Russian agents with their host, Republican U.S. Representative Luna.
Rep. Luna with representatives from the ROCOR, OCA, Antiochian, Serbian, and Greek jurisdictions Photo: Society of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco
The delegation was put together by a pan-Orthodox (meaning not tied to any specific jurisdiction) fraternity called the Society of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco. Among the clergy and hierarchs present were Metropolitan Nicholas (ROCOR), Bishop John Abdalah (Antioch), Fr. David Bozeman (OCA), and Fr. Vasilije Vranic (Serbian Orthodox Church). The organizer of the meeting was Catherine Whiteford, co-chair of the Young Republican National Federation.
Notice something about the group? There are no Russians involved. These are Americans. Only one jurisdiction, ROCOR, has an actual official “tie” to Moscow, and that is not much of one as (even The Hill article admitted) the jurisdiction is self-governing under American hierarchs. The other jurisdictions’ only connection to Moscow is that they are in communion with the Russian Church. The Church they were there to speak on behalf of, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), officially severed all ties with Moscow in May 2022 as a protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The UOC is under the leadership of a native-born Ukrainian Metropolitan Onuphry. The UOC is run by Ukrainians for Ukrainians and fully supports the Ukrainian War effort.
This is Metropolitan Onuphry, primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church that Kiev wants to crush with the support of American hate mongers. This is who they are attacking. Not Putin. Not Patriarch Kirill. This man who is renowned for his selfless love of his flock and his unwavering dedication to his cherished homeland. To pretend that he and his Church are Russian agents is pure, absolute evil.
These are all easily discoverable facts. Too easily discoverable for the breathless Russia, Russia, Russia narrative in the article and Congressional statements to be mere mistakes. Rather, the framing of this as Muscovites invade Capitol Hill is part of a long-running campaign to discredit the Orthodox Church.
For those who are not aware: our cultural, political, economic, and foreign policy elites have long regarded the rapidly growing American Orthodox jurisdictions as existential threats to their power. Orthodoxy is morally traditional, locally minded, anti-war, anti-Zionist, pro-natalist, anti-abortion, anti-transhumanist, and eschews partisan politics. Orthodoxy has also not disavowed its traditional teaching against usury (the basis of our modern economy). In other words, the Orthodox Church opposes practically everything the governing elites in America value. An America with a large Orthodox minority will be a very different place from today. The prospect of Orthodox growth scares the daylights out of the powers-that-be.
Which is why this latest excretion from The Hill is right in line with a string of previously published anti-Orthodox “hit pieces,” frequently penned by nominally Orthodox writers. We covered a few of them, and some subversion by nominally Orthodox online influencers, in this article called The National Security War Against Orthodox Unity. (Link goes directly to the article section on hit pieces and influencers.) The anti-Orthodox narrative could be summarized as: “ROCOR (and by extension the other Orthodox jurisdictions in communion with her) are dangerous Putinist radicals out to undermine American national security, spread Russian propaganda, and are only growing by recruiting right-wing extremists who are racist, fascist threats to America’s liberal democratic order.”
Hollywood has even gotten into the anti-Orthodox narrative business. The John Wick movies and the TV show Mayor of Kingstown, just to give two examples, feature Orthodox Churches as creepy headquarters to criminal enterprises, even showing Orthodox clergy as active participants in nefarious activities such as murder, torture, arms trafficking, and drug dealing.
A criminal syndicate was prominently featured in John Wick 3 operating out of an Orthodox Church, with the full participation of local clergy. Â
Hollywood’s message is quite clear, and is on the same page as that put forward on X by Representative Joe Wilson – the Russian Orthodox Church is not really a religious organization at all. It is an arm of the corrupt Russian state which, if Hollywood imagery is to believed, is also involved in all kinds of dangerous criminal activities. If all this negativity were only directed at the actual Russian Orthodox Church, it would be contemptible but not much of a problem for Americans. Anyone visiting an Orthodox Church in the U.S. can clearly see no one is running drugs, guns, assassination rings or influence campaigns. However, with the ongoing clumsy attempt to link all Orthodox Christians to Russia, these negative portrayals have very much become our problem.

The Greeks, however, are exempt from inclusion in this narrative. The Patriarchate of Constantinople is protected from any criticism as an enthusiastic Western security asset. It was Patriarch Bartholomew, working with then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, that created the conditions for the very persecution in Ukraine our intrepid delegation was in Washington to protest. Constantinople is “our” man, and the Deep State, fronted by people like Representative Joe Wilson, leverage him to the hilt.

ROCOR is an American Orthodox jurisdiction which is self-governing. Neither Patriarch Kirill nor Putin control or influence American Orthodox Christians. The recent delegation to Washington featured representatives from multiple American Orthodox jurisdictions, yet all of them were slandered as Russia agents. Ironically, Patriarch Bartholomew actually is an American security asset. He is the face of “good” Orthodoxy – amenable to globalist polices, ecumenist, and endlessly willing to compromise the Orthodox Faith to curry favor with his masters.Â
The U.S. founded the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) with the help of Patriarch Bartholomew. This sordid affair is covered in an article on The American Conservative website entitled Zelensky vs. the Ukrainian Orthodox Church:
The State Department and politicians of both parties carried out work to promote the new church. Two months before the creation of the OCU in 2018, Filaret and Epifaniy met in the United States with Joe Biden, who declared his gratitude for their work. State Department Ambassador for Religious Freedom Samuel Brownback, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and special representative for Ukraine Ambassador Kurt Volker declared their support for this project.
Immediately after its creation, the OCU received its first official congratulations from the State Department and the U.S. Embassy. At the same time, Ambassador Brownback and the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt—who was also ambassador to Ukraine from 2013 to 2016—visited church leaders and Mount Athos to urge them to recognize the OCU. Both Ambassador Volker and Secretary Pompeo met with Epifaniy many times. All facts indicate that the promotion of the OCU was part of U.S. policy in Ukraine.
The Patriarchate of Constantinople, and all its affiliated organizations, have been working feverishly since 2018 to get other Orthodox Churches to recognize OCU (a mission that has largely failed). The Patriarchate has also striven mightily to cover up the persecution of the UOC, which began long before the war. Persecution of the UOC was never popular among the majority of Ukrainians. Zelenskyy was, in fact, elected on a promise to not interfere in religious affairs. Bait, please meet, Switch.
The UOC is recognized by the vast majority of Orthodox Churches worldwide (U.S. included) as the canonical church in Ukraine. That the vast majority of Orthodox have rejected OCU is highly embarrassing to the “Ecumenical Patriarch” in Constantinople. Even multiple Greek hierarchs, priests, and laity have refused to abandon Metropolitan Onuphry, despite serious American-backed pressure from Constantinople. Also embarrassing is the very visible persecution of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians by their own government. Even more embarrassing is the very plausible rumor circulating that the U.S. paid Patriarch Bartholomew a multi-million dollar bribe to formally recognize the fake, nationalist, modernist OCU.
All this embarrassment, combined with an ongoing need to keep favor with the U.S. Deep State, causes top-level Greeks in America to frequently insult fellow Orthodox Christians as Russian pawns. The text below is from a disgusting online letter from Archon National Commander Anthony J. Limberakis, MD:
The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (AEP) note with dismay and regret that Russian Orthodox clergy who are boosters of Vladimir Putin’s unjust, immoral and monstrous war against Ukraine are meeting this week with White House officials and Congressional leaders in Washington.
Rep. Wilson rightly notes that the Russian Orthodox Church, including the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) has been operating as an extension of the Russian state, and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has criticized it for doing so on numerous occasions.
With Orthodox brothers like these, who needs enemies?
Before we move on, there is one more thing to point out about Patriarch Bartholomew. Among many Greeks in the U.S., the Patriarch and his ecclesiastical henchmen are as popular as spoiled goat milk. This erosion of support, combined with the rapid growth of other American Orthodox jurisdictions, means Patriarch Bartholomew is losing influence even as he dreams of becoming an Orthodox Pope. The Greek Archdiocese, at least at the top, would enthusiastically collaborate with the U.S. national security state in closing and/or illegally absorbing competing Orthodox jurisdictions. They did it in Ukraine. They are doing it in Estonia. They are trying to do it in other countries around the world. They would absolutely do it here. All in the name of “national security” of course.
The goal of building this anti-Orthodox narrative is pure intimidation. The ruling elite wants us frightened. They hope a good scare is enough to make us run and hide. Why bother to forcibly close our churches, if we close them ourselves out of fear? By whatever means necessary, the Deep State Swamp wants to stop the Orthodox from growing and changing the national conversation. Even the New York Times has been forced to take notice that our parishes are full of new faces:
Something is changing in an otherwise quiet corner of Christianity in the United States, one that prides itself on how little it has changed over time. Priests are swapping stories about record attendance numbers. Older members are adjusting — or not — to the influx of new attendees. Parishes are strategizing about how to accommodate more prospective converts than existing clergy can reasonably handle on their own.
Across the country, the ancient tradition of Orthodox Christianity is attracting energetic new adherents, especially among conservative young men. They are drawn to what they describe as a more demanding, even difficult, practice of Christianity. Echoing some of the rhetoric of the so-called manosphere, new waves of young converts say Orthodoxy offers them hard truths and affirms their masculinity.
Okay, you get the picture. The anti-Orthodox narrative isn’t new, and as long as we are growing, it won’t go away. And now the threat level has definitely been dialed up a few notches. We face enemies both outside, and within, the Orthodox Church. So – what now? Here are 7 suggestions to ponder for what to do going forward.
1. Keep Engaged in Church but Take Precautions
Do not withdraw from Church. Do not cancel any events. Do not shut up. Do not keep a low profile. Keep doing exactly what you are doing. The Church survived the Soviets, the Ottoman Empire, and we will survive the decline of the American Empire just the same.
The Joe Wilsons of the world are perfectly fine if all this talk about treason stirs up actual anti-Orthodox violence. It makes the fear they want us to feel all the more real. Now that we have all been labeled traitors, threats of all kinds have started popping up online. Given the physical assaults (including arson) that other churches have suffered, we do need to take these threats seriously. While cowering at home on Sundays is not an option, we do recommend that Orthodox men be prepared to defend themselves and their parishes.
We also recommend being careful with interactions with people you don’t know. Federal agents may end up in our parishes as part of a DOJ investigation. Past experience has taught us that Feds with an agenda are perfectly capable of creating crimes where none actually exist. Be open. Be friendly. Show everyone the love of Christ, but watch out for anyone asking weird questions or trying to stir up trouble.
If you are ever interrogated, remember to never talk to police or federal agents.
 2. Don’t Fall into the Russia Trap
As noted, the Swampy Deep State wants to make this entire debate about how awful Russia is. Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church should not even be involved in this conversation. The Swamp creatures will say awful things about the Russian Orthodox Church. Let them. Don’t defend Russia, as that plays into their game of pretending we are all Russian agents. American Orthodox Christians are not part of the Russian Orthodox Church, except to the extent that we are in communion with her. We are not duty-bound to defend Russia’s war, Russia’s actions, or the honor of Patriarch Kirill. Let the Russians see to their own affairs.
This conversation is strictly about the right of American Orthodox Christians to peacefully petition the U.S. government to stop spending their tax dollars to fund the persecution of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians. The UOC has cut all ties with Moscow, and fully supports her own troops in their current war effort against the Russians. Representative Luna set exactly the right tone on X:
It is both alarming and disappointing that  @RepJoeWilson, instead of responding to a request for help on behalf of imprisoned Ukranian Orthodox members currently being held in Ukraine, chose to turn this into a press campaign against them. Mr. Wilson — with whom I have no personal issues on foreign affairs and who is currently a vocal advocate for Ukraine, even wearing a Ukrainian flag nearly every day — should remember that his first priority is to his own country. His second should be ensuring that American taxpayer dollars are not used to imprison Orthodox Christians simply because the word “Russia” appears in their church name. In December, I will be hosting numerous members of the Orthodox Church from across the country alongside several Members of Congress. More to come on this.
The delegation that went to Washington was comprised of American citizens speaking on behalf of persecuted Ukrainians. That is the truth the Swamp wants so badly to conceal. Don’t let them get away with it.
Part of not falling for the “Russia” bait will involve educating people concerning the nature of Orthodox Ecclesiology. It is true that ROCOR is officially part of the Russian Orthodox Church in a way that no other American Orthodox jurisdiction is. That fact is not hidden, but it can be easily misrepresented. See this example below.

ROCOR is a self-governing Church. Being “under” Moscow in Orthodox Ecclesiastical terms does not mean Patriarch Kirill gets to give orders to Americans. We are not Roman Catholics, and he is not a Pope. All Orthodox bishops are equal, and each one is sovereign in his own diocese. The local ROCOR priests report to their bishops, who in turn are subject to the ROCOR American synod. They are not subject to any kind of control from Moscow. No one in Moscow, not Patriarch Kirill and certainly not Putin, gets to interfere with the governance and actions of ROCOR. Or any other American Orthodox jurisdiction for that matter. Our American bishops frequently disagree with Moscow on a great many things, including the war in Ukraine. That is perfectly Orthodox. We are a family of Churches, not a corporation with a global CEO.
3. Don’t Fall into the War Trap
The persecution of the UOC actually began prior the war even having started. The purpose of the delegation going to Washington was strictly to protest Christian persecution. The trip was not at about the war in any way. Here is the list of things the delegation was seeking from their own American representatives in Congress:
• Stop any U.S. funding that directly contributes to the persecution of religious groups.
• End the drafting of Orthodox clergy to frontline combat roles.
• Provide immediate medical care to imprisoned clergy.
• Release clergy and journalists detained for their faith or for reporting on these abuses.
None of those points have anything to do with continued U.S. funding for Ukrainian war efforts. Individual Orthodox may have their own opinions about the war. America is still a free country after all. But collectively, this effort has nothing to do with the war. The American Orthodox involved are solely seeking to preserve the same freedom of religion for Ukrainians that we demand for ourselves as Americans. As Orthodox Christians, that should be our sole focus in any discussion.

4. Keep the Pressure Up
The 18 November meeting was only the start. Another meeting between a U.S. Representative and Orthodox clergy, under the auspices of the Society of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco, took place on Capitol Hill on 19 Nov 2025. At that meeting, the pan-Orthodox delegation discussed the persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA).
In a post on X, Catherine Whiteford of the delegation, who also serves as co-Chair of the Young Republican National Federation, said:
“We are grateful for his leadership as Vice Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and, as an Antiochian Orthodox Christian himself, for his deep understanding of the challenges faced by persecuted Christians around the world. Thankful for the conversation and his commitment to defending religious freedom.”
Bravo for not yielding to slander and threats, while continuing to stand up for Ukrainian Christians!
The Society of Saint John of Shangai plans another Congressional action on 16 December 2025. Here is the official announcement from their Website:
In the face of threats to expand the surveillance and persecution of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Orthodox Church—by those who sacrifice Church to State—The Society of Saint John of Shanghai, a domestic coalition of Orthodox brotherhoods, is coordinating a national day of action on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025.
With the blessing of Metropolitan Nicholas, our petition advocates for the defense of the long-suffering Holy Orthodox Church and its faithful in Ukraine, who cannot advocate for themselves. We will be standing before Senators, Members of Congress, and Policy staff with Orthodox Christians from across the United States, to include other Greek, ROCOR, Serbian, Antiochian, and OCA jurisdictional parishioners, clergy, and monastics—raising awareness of the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Metropolitan Onufriy being carried out by the Ukrainian government since before the Russo-Ukrainian war with the support of NATO.
Please share this invitation with other representatives and sign up at http://societyofstjohn.com
This is exactly the right approach – Christian boldness in the face of threats. The Church of the Martyrs will not be intimidated. For the sake of the persecuted Orthodox Christians in Ukraine, let us get even louder.
5. The UOC is the Real Ukrainian Church Under Real Persecution
Americans by and large hate history, but a certain amount of it is necessary. The narrative that the UOC is a “splinter” group falls apart under any unbiased historical examination. Prior to the war, 70% of Ukrainians belonged to the UOC. The heretical, schismatic OCU was not founded because of a Russian threat. It was founded as a vehicle for extreme Ukrainian nationalism, as a political prop for Poroshenko’s failed presidential campaign, and as a base of support for Western use of Ukraine as a proxy to “degrade” Russia. In other words, it is not a real Church, but is in fact everything that Swamp creatures are accusing the UOC of being.
Please learn enough of the history to succinctly explain how OCU came into being, the lineage of the UOC dating back to Prince Vladimir, and why the vast majority of Orthodox Christians worldwide reject OCU and continue supporting the UOC (which is still the majority Church in Ukraine). A good article to start learning is here.
Further, Swamp creatures and their proxies often fall back on denying persecution of the UOC is even happening. The ongoing persecution is easily proven. Even our own American Vice President J.D. Vance took Patriarch Bartholomew to task over it during a White House meeting:
Political analyst Kostiantyn Bondarenko, in a conversation with blogger Oleksandr Shelest, spoke about the details of the White House meeting between Patriarch Bartholomew and Vice President J.D. Vance.
Bondarenko reminded that Vance is a well-known supporter of religious freedoms.
“And Patriarch Bartholomew was explicitly told that there is persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Ukraine,” the political analyst continued.
According to him, the Patriarch, in response, tried to justify himself by appealing to the Holodomor and Stalinist repressions, which in the current situation looked extremely unconvincing.
Also, according to Bondarenko, Patriarch Bartholomew was “asked to give an account of his relations with Mike Pompeo, of Mike Pompeo’s involvement in the creation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the granting of the Tomos. Besides, a specific sum was named.”
God bless J.D. Vance! This encounter visibly rattled Patriarch Bartholomew. Here was the VP of his patron country not only pointing out the persecution of the UOC, that His All-Holiness directly caused, but also asking about a possible American bribe offered in exchange for the OCU’s tomos of autocephaly. Patriarch Bartholomew could do nothing but ineffectively sputter in return.
Fr. John Whiteford has published a sobering collection of video evidence on his blog detailing the persecution of innocent Ukrainian Christians. Visit the link here for the videos. Below is an excerpt from his post:
Some will claim that this effort was an attempt to embarrass the Ukrainian government, but that is also a ridiculous claim, because the only thing Ukraine would need to do to stop the embarrassment would be to stop persecuting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
What kind of persecution is happening? Clergy are being beaten. Parishioners are being beaten. Churches are being stolen, and then often just padlocked. Clergy and monks are being drafted into the Army, despite the fact they cannot fight, by profession.
Below is additional evidence of the horrific abuses suffered by Ukrainian Orthodox Christians.
Orthodox priests are not allowed to bear arms in conflict.Â

Keep in mind that all of this abuse of the UOC is intended to force Ukrainians into the “official” government-sponsored OCU. This effort is clearly failing. OCU parishes (especially the ones seized from the UOC) stand empty, while OCU also suffers a critical shortage of qualified priests. In two articles here and here, Yaroslav Yasynets, a former cleric of the Kyiv Diocese of OCU, gives an inside look at a failing, astroturfed pseudo-church:
“Very often, OCU priests are people with no theological education at all — those who just yesterday were working in secular jobs. If they have not themselves received the sacred tradition of the Church into their hearts, how can they possibly convey it to others?” the former OCU cleric asks. Yasynets also points not only to the low educational level of candidates for the priesthood but to moral problems as well:
“There are many examples where not only uneducated but also immoral people — bigamists or deliberate fornicators — are allowed to be ordained. Rampant alcoholism and other harmful habits among clergy are also widely known.”
The former cleric draws attention to what he calls a critical shortage of priests in the OCU. Despite having more than 8,000 parishes, the Church has only about 4,000 clergy.
One of the main problems mentioned by the Yasenets is the situation with seized temples, according to a report from the UOJ’s Ukraine branch. Yasenets says that many churches taken from the UOC stand practically empty.
“Often the UOC community remains with its priest, their temple is taken away, and they celebrate the liturgy and pray elsewhere. And the temple transferred to the OCU stands empty,” notes Yasenets. “You don’t have to go far. Anyone can open the internet, Google, YouTube and search for these proofs there, because there are a lot of photos and videos.
It’s worth asking ourselves: what are we doing wrong compared to the hated Muscovites, that people go to them and are often ready to even pray in adapted premises, defend their churches with their chests, while our temples and altars are emptying? Why do churches transferred to the OCU by hook or by crook stand empty?Â
“Maybe it’s time to stop blaming mythical external enemies for everything and start asking ourselves critical questions,” Yasenets declares.
So which is the real Ukrainian Church and which is the “splinter” – the Church that people stay with even after their temples are seized and they are thrown into the streets, or the “church” ordaining unqualified men whose temples stand empty?
6. Make Constantinople Feel Real Repercussions
American Orthodox have put up with a lot from the Patriarchal henchmen running the Greek Archdiocese over the years. To maintain Eucharistic unity, we have tolerated flirtations with heresy, embarrassing ecumenist actions, slander of American Orthodox Christians (even priests), and support for Ukrainian Christian persecution. We’ve tolerated it all up till now. However, we have finally gotten to the last straw. It comes in the form of a letter from the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s Archons supporting Rep. Joe Wilson’s egregious slander of the members of the Washington delegation. The Archons, an “official” arm of the Patriarchate, are outright calling for persecution of American Orthodox Christians.
Enough is enough. Well known podcaster Fr. Thomas Soroka has called for OCA (and hopefully more jurisdictions besides) to suspend membership in the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops. Bravo! The Assembly is essentially under Greek Archdiocese control, and the participation of other jurisdictions has done little other than serving to legitimize one bad action after another.

Barring a real apology and show of genuine support from the Greek Archdiocese for the slandered American Orthodox Christians (not just a statement of “we did nothing wrong”), American Orthodox jurisdictions should start with leaving the Assembly, and then go as far as necessary to put a stop to this kind of behavior. We cannot continue to just ignore the threat posed by the Patriarchate of Constantinople and its U.S. affiliates.
7. Teach the Truth – Orthodox Catholic Christianity is not “Foreign”
Whether in this slanderous attack, or in the polemics of Protestant “Christian Nationalists,” Orthodox Christianity is frequently portrayed as “foreign.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Orthodox Catholicism is the root of Western Civilization. At one time, the entire Catholic Church was united, both East and West, in preserving the true Christian Faith once delivered to the Apostles.
This is evident in our Orthodox veneration of pre-schism Western Saints, including those of our mother civilization of England. It is true that Roman Catholicism departed from the true Christian Faith, and that the so-called “Reformers” went even further afield. But the Christian Faith that built the West is still alive and well in the Orthodox Church. This common Orthodox heritage was brilliantly covered in this video from an Orthodox man in Great Britain.
As Orthodox, we are often keen to tell people how Orthodoxy is different from Roman Catholicism and the modern religious bodies birthed by the Reformation. It is true that the original, undefiled Christian Faith is vastly different from the local megachurch and the local Episcopal Church with a lesbian “priest.” What we sometimes fail to communicate, however, is that far from being “foreign,” the Orthodox Catholic Faith was once the very fabric of Western society. The growth of Orthodoxy in the U.S. is a reclamation of our true Western heritage, not its rejection.
For quite recent historical reasons, some of our jurisdictions have ethnic names attached to them. That is a phenomenon which will pass as a small blip in the 2,000 year history of the Church founded by Christ through the Apostles. Orthodoxy is the True Faith on which rests all Christian civilization – East and West. For Americans who inherited this legacy, albeit in a garbled form, there is absolutely nothing foreign about Orthodoxy. As American Orthodox Christians, it is our job to explain that to anyone willing to listen.

Chronicle of the reprisal against UOC clergy17 June 2026
A documented summary of known cases of detention, forced mobilization, and dispatch of UOC clergymen to military units – and why this is precisely a reprisal.
Defending one’s country is a constitutional duty. But a clergyman, under threat of being defrocked, cannot take up arms. Therefore, the forced mobilization of clergy is nothing other than a reprisal against priests and the Church.
In ancient times, one could avoid torment by renouncing Christ. In Soviet times, renouncing the priesthood could help. In today’s Ukraine, renouncing the Church and transferring to the OCU can help one avoid mobilization. But in every age, true Christians have chosen faithfulness. This publication is about those who have remained faithful today.
We have systematized the cases of mobilization of clergymen of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church that are available in the media. Let us make it clear from the outset: these are only the examples that have made it into the public domain. In reality, there are far more of them. Most likely, many times more.
Year 2024Archpriest Ioan Rozman, Khust Eparchy
On March 14, 2024, the secretary of the Khust Eparchy, Archpriest Ioan Rozman, was summoned for questioning by an investigator at the Tiachiv District Police. After the interrogation, upon leaving the police premises, he was detained by armed men in balaclavas and taken to an unknown location. The eparchy later reported that he was serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, despite having grounds for exemption from service (many children). As of April 23, 2024, Archpriest Ioan Rozman was still being held in a military unit.
Archpriest Ioann Petechel, Khust Eparchy
On March 27, 2024, employees of the TRC (Territorial Recruitment Center) took away the treasurer of the Khust Eparchy of the UOC, Archpriest Ioann Petechel, who has three minor children. Following a parliamentary inquiry, the police opened a criminal case regarding the unlawful mobilization of clergy of the Khust Eparchy. On April 22, that is, nearly a month later, Fr. Ioann Petechel was released.
Archimandrite Varlaam (Didenko), Khust Eparchy
On August 31, 2024, a report appeared that the Uzhhorod TRC had mobilized Archimandrite Varlaam, the abbot of the Savior-Transfiguration Monastery in the village of Tereblia, Tiachiv District, Zakarpattia region. He was sent to a military training center in Rivne.
Archpriests Vasyl and Stepan Huk, Khust and Odessa Eparchies
On September 22, 2024, after the Sunday Liturgy in the village of Iza, Zakarpattia region, Khust TRC staff took away two UOC priests, brothers Archpriests Vasyl and Stepan Huk. They were held for an entire day; after the faithful came out to the TRC and blocked the road, the priests were released in the evening.
Archpriest Ioann Polishchuk, Cherkasy Eparchy
On October 1, 2024, in Kremenets, Ternopil region, Archpriest Ioann Polishchuk was detained, having recently returned from Germany where he had been ministering to UOC parishioners. Despite high blood pressure, he was denied medical assistance at the TRC and taken to a training center in the Rivne region. It was later reported that Fr. Ioann was subjected to physical and psychological pressure in one of the military units in the Zakarpattia region due to his refusal of mobilization on religious grounds.
Archpriest Vasyl Rosokha, Khust Eparchy
He was mobilized on October 2, 2024. According to his wife, after being held at the Tiachiv TRC, the priest was sent to Rivne.
Archpriest Petro Cholak, Volodymyr-Volynsky Eparchy

If 11 people were mobilized during the entire year of 2024, then the number reached 42 in 2025. In less than half of 2026, there were already 49 cases. This suggests that, according to the chronology, pressure on the UOC through the mobilization of clergy has been increasing.
Second, the same pattern is repeatedly described in these cases: a person is detained on the street, near a church, while traveling to visit a sick person, at a cemetery after a funeral service, or even while receiving medical treatment. This is followed by a rapid military medical examination, confiscation of a phone, loss of contact with family members, and transfer to a training ground or military unit.
Third, mobilization is reported even in cases where a person has possible legal grounds for deferment, including having many children, serious health conditions, or caring for a person with a disability.
Fourth, public attention to the actions of TRC personnel regarding the mobilization of clergy, protests by believers, and priests’ refusal to take up arms have, according to these reports, led to some results. In a number of cases, priests were released.
Fifth, the authorities are aware that mobilization has serious consequences for clergy. For example, Viktor Yelensky stated at one of his recent press conferences: “He (the priest – Ed.) cannot take up arms. If he commits even an unintentional killing, he must be removed from the priesthood.” At the same time, according to the DESS head, “We do not grant deferments to such [clergy].”
Thus, according to the author’s interpretation, the state is presenting UOC deacons, priests, and even bishops with a “choice without a choice”: either transfer to the OCU, or face mobilization with the risks of death, injury, or loss of clerical status.
ConclusionThe consistent refusal to grant deferments to UOC priests and the significant increase in reported cases of mobilization indicate, in the author’s view, that the authorities have found an effective way to exert pressure on the Church.
This is presented as especially contradictory against the background of claims that DESS grants deferments to representatives of small religious movements and pagan organizations, arguing that they are critically important for Ukraine’s economy and public life.
The lives of martyrs and confessors of the first centuries can be found in the lives of the saints. The accounts of those who suffered for Christ during the Soviet era can be found in their biographies and court records.
We should not forget those clergy members who have received the difficult cross of confession of faith in our own time. But above all, we should pray for them and do everything we can do for their release.

“Parishioners” brought to Lavra by buses on Epifaniy’s name day, media
People from different regions were brought in an organized manner to the “service” of the head of the OCU at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
On the name day of OCU head Epifaniy Dumenko on May 12, 2026, near the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a large number of buses were spotted, which, according to media reports and eyewitnesses, were used to bring participants of the festive service to the monastery. According to information from the Telegram channel “Fortress Lavra”, there were at least 13 buses at the monastery, some of which were parked closer to the Paton Bridge to avoid attracting attention.
After the service ended, people headed en masse to the buses and soon left the monastery grounds. According to eyewitnesses, among those who arrived were both laypeople and OCU clergy. Some buses, according to media reports, arrived from the Zhytomyr region.
The authors of the publications note that it’s not the first time that transportation of people for OCU events at the Lavra has been organized. According to them, “the people who were brought in stood through the service, appeared on media cameras, and then dispersed,” while the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra itself continues to be used as a “stage set” for events organized by Dumenko’s structure.
As the UOJ reported, on this day, the National Reserve staff cut off the locks and forcibly seized St. Anna’s Conception Church at the Far Caves of the Lower Lavra.

Museum staff cut off the locks and seized St. Anna’s Conception Church at the Far Caves despite the absence of final rulings on the monastery.
On May 12, 2026, employees of the National Reserve cut off the locks and forcibly seized St. Anna’s Conception Church at the Far Caves of the Lower Lavra.
As Archpriest Nikita Chekman reported on his Telegram channel, museum representatives took this step despite the fact that court proceedings between the monastery and the state over the right to use the Lavra buildings are still ongoing. The courts have not yet issued final rulings in the relevant disputes.
The lawyer pointed to the particular cynicism of the reserve employees’ actions. They took advantage of the absence of people on the premises and broke the locks without any official notice. Some time after access to the shrine had been blocked, the reserve sent letters to the monastery claiming that the brethren had allegedly removed their belongings voluntarily.
“Any unilateral actions to change the actual use of churches and premises while a court dispute remains unresolved must be carried out exclusively in the manner and within the limits provided by law, with respect for the rule of law and the judicial process,” Archpriest Nikita Chekman stressed.
According to the lawyer, such actions not only contradict the principles of the rule of law and respect for the judicial process, “but also offend the feelings of believers, for whom the shrines of the Lavra hold special spiritual significance.”
Earlier, the UOJ reported that a TRC detained an archimandrite of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv.

“Three Republican lawmakers have sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney General requesting an investigation into ROCOR for possible Russian influence.”
https://spzh.eu/en/news/89236-two-more-us-congressmen-claim-that-defending-uoc-is-kremlin-lobbying
What Russian influence could they possibly find?
Well, it doesn’t take much digging around to note that ROCOR, since 2018, has dropped out of the Assembly of Bishops, is no longer in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Greek Archdiocese of America, the Church of Alexandria, the Church of Cyprus, the Church of Greece, and is also against autocephaly, both for America and Ukraine. That sounds like a smoking gun to me right there. If that’s not influence, then I don’t know what is.
Good grief. Meanwhile, I certain country in the Middle East owns virtually every member of the US Congress and that’s totally fine. Sigh….
Many Orthodox Christians have allowed themselves to be influenced by the political pull of the Russian World ideology, just as many Protestant Christians have allowed themselves to be influenced by the political pull of Zionism. Both ideologies, Russian World and Zionism, are very similar. These are irredentist ideologies that are used to justify “holy war”, a concept that should be alien to Christianity. Yet if the Russian World ideology is not renounced by Christians, then there is little moral standing for them to condemn Zionism. Otherwise, we are just the pot calling the kettle black.
This is classic troll behavior. You keep focusing on Russia, because you need to cover up the fact that you are in favor of the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – which is run by Ukrainians for Ukrainians. You need to cast aspersions that Americans are under “Russian influence”, to cover up the fact that a large group of Americans has independently come to conclusions that are radically different than yours concerning Christian Persecution. Instead of arguing the point, which you can’t win, you instead denounce fellow Americans, who disagree with you, as being brainwashed by non-existent Russian influence.
This is not a “Holy War” in Ukraine for anyone but, perhaps, some number of Neo-Nazis on the Ukrainian side. For everyone else, this was the perfectly foreseeable outcome of immoral Great Power politics. It is a fight over dominance of resources, territory, and political control. Innocent people are caught in the meat grinder. But “Holy War” as in an Orthodox Jihad or Crusade? Spare us all the theatrics. Holy Wars don’t get negotiated solutions as they are existential in nature – one side has to surrender to total dominance by the other. This could be ended today with reasonable negotiating positions on both sides.
https://orthodoxreflections.com/is-russia-really-fighting-a-holy-war-in-ukraine/
Your link is from 2022? I’m referring to the statement approved by Patriarch Kirill, dated March 27, 2024:
“From a spiritual and moral perspective, the special military operation [in Ukraine] is a Holy War, in which Russia and its people, defending the unified spiritual space of Holy Rus’, fulfill the mission of the ‘Restrainer,’ protecting the world from the onslaught of globalism and the victory of the West, which has fallen into Satanism.”
https://www.patriarchia.ru/article/105523
The causes of the war have not changed since 2022.
Again, pure bot / troll behavior. As noted in the article, “Russia, Russia, Russia.” If this were social media, you would have already been muted. Since it’s our site, we can be a bit more lenient. It should be noted, of course, that you don’t want to discuss freedom of religion – either in Ukraine or the United States. It is ironic that you completely exhibit the same behavior the article warns against engaging.
Patriarch Kirill is not wrong about Satanism dominating the West – a point made by everyone from George Galloway (British democratic socialist and Roman Catholic who was a huge fan of Pope Francis) to Tucker Carlson (Episcopalian traditional American conservative). How the Patriarch views the war is only a recast in spiritual terms of what the Russian government and all Great Power analysts have said repeatedly about the causation of the conflict. The West wanted to use a proxy conflict to degrade Russia. You can cast that in power politics terms, which is really the truth, or you can put it in spiritual terms (which the Patriarch did). It all depends on whether you want to look at a secular framing, or a spiritual one. The cause of the war was the ramp up of attacks on the Donbass that led to fears that Ukraine was going to launch a major invasion against an unprotected ethnic Russian population. That is well-documented, on this site and hundreds of thousands of others.
Yes, the Russian Church sees herself as an enemy of Globalism. As does the Orthodox Church at large, outside of the top tier of clerics and bishops in the Patriarchates of Constantinople and Alexandria. They are competing with each other and the Pope to be the chaplain of the Globalist order, a fact that has upset more than a few Greek priests, Greek monks, and Greek bishops. On the RC side, see Archbishop Vigano among others who are saying the exact same things – the RC is corrupted by its involvement with Globalism.
1) Americans are not influenced by Russia, but are influenced by the fact that Western Governments are fountains of anti-Christian activities and are run by a Global Elite bent on war and domination. Many of us voted for Trump to try and stop all that. There was some success with USAID, but he continued the war in Ukraine and may involve us in yet another one. 2) A true Holy War would not be open to a negotiated solution, which Russia has been open to since the beginning. The original intent of the SMO was to force a solution, not conqueror Ukraine. You don’t go into a “Holy War” to force a compromise. You go into a “Holy War” to totally destroy the enemy. 3) None of this has any impact on Freedom of Religion. 4) Patriarch Kirill’s opinions on anything, including the war, are the issue of the Russian Orthodox Church. Not the Russian State, which really couldn’t care less what Patriarch Kirill thinks about the conflict. Patriarch Kirill is not our problem. Not our concern. You keep going back to this well because you can’t deal with the facts on the ground either in Ukraine or the United States.
There are, of course, limits on the freedom of religion that are meant to protect the public, and in Ukraine’s case perhaps even to protect clergy and churches from angry young men who will soon be conscripted into war once they turn 25. Interestingly, these young men are not taking their anger out on the Zelensky government, but rather on the clergy and churches of the UOC. So are the limits imposed by Ukraine on the UOC reasonable though? As I have pointed out before, the Zelensky government has made a clear statement on what it expects from the UOC to end the ban: Firstly, the UOC must make public letters notifying about the withdrawal of its representatives from the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and all governing bodies of the ROC. Secondly, the UOC must inform the Local Orthodox Churches that it is no longer part of the ROC. That’s it. It’s just two things. The question I have is: why doesn’t the UOC comply with this request? It doesn’t sound like a particularly difficult request to comply with.
So if you scroll up the page you will see evidence of government assaults on worshippers, arrest of hierarchs, beating of hierarchs, forcible conscription of clergy, and confiscation of Churches. With that kind of protection, why would the UOC be upset? Sure, there is plenty of evidence of Neo-Nazi nationalists also targeting UOC parishes, but it is also documented that such attacks usually happen with police standing by watching or assisting. Not “protecting” anyone.
How many young men are even left in Ukraine at this point? Millions have fled. Hundreds of thousands more have been killed. This is not just angry young men venting their frustration at the UOC for some reason.
There is no support for curtailment of Freedom of Religion under the guise of “safety.” Americans do not buy that you beat, imprison, and silence Christians for their own good, or even for any possible legitimate reason. Especially if the government is trying to force the Church to accept secular control of her internal organization.
This was covered in this article: https://orthodoxreflections.com/metropolitan-onuphry-of-ukraine-the-man-the-west-must-hide/
Now, that is all very, very clear. Why doesn’t the Ukraine Government accept that and move on, instead of placing even more unconstitutional demands on the UOC? Better yet, why do you constantly excuse the additional demands, which amount to placing the UOC under govt control?
In any case, the persecution of the UOC has been a major detriment to the Kiev Govt. Hundreds of thousands of UOC parishioners have been called on to fight, and their morale has been seriously damaged by their own govt persecuting their Church. It has harmed international relations, and led to disunity in a society that needed unity badly. So why is this being pursued as a policy? Because of two reasons. 1) It makes the Americans happy because they are obsessed with Russian religions “soft power.” What makes the Americans happy must be taken into account, because Trump pays the bills. The OCU was an American project from start to finish, its failure is embarrassing, so what do Americans always do with a failed policy? “Double Down!” So the Americans get what they want – more Christian persecution. 2) Zelensky is dependent on the ultra nationalist, Neo Nazi Far Right. They want blood. They can’t get it on the battlefield, as Ukraine is getting rocked. They want to hold someone accountable for their failures. Extremists are going to be extreme. If Zelensky tried to deny them this blood, they’d take it out on him. So the UOC are sacrificial lambs on the altars of extremist nationalism.
None of the above is anything Americans are going to accept.
You seem confused. The break in communion was over a matter of ecclesiological overreach. The EP committed an act of schism by taking it upon himself to grant autocephaly unilaterally, ignoring the limits of his authority and jurisdiction. The EP is not an Orthodox Pope.
One footnote to add to my comment above: Russia was granted autocephaly in 1589, half a millennium after the baptism of Rus. It took centuries of organic development before it was recognized by the Orthodox world as being ready and worthy of complete self-governance. Americans think everything needs to be instantaneous and have no concept of time as it relates to Church tradition.
American Orthodoxy is not at all ready for autocephaly. However, an actual functioning synod (the assembly isn’t) and a direct tie to a single Patriarch, not either Russia or Constantinople, or an autocephalous Church (Greece comes to mind) would be a great step forward. Antioch would be a great choice, though those of in Antioch could be biased. Metropolitan Saba has been fire as of late, and now Syria is officially our bosom buddy again with ISIS in charge. That would go a long ways towards solving the “foreign” influence charges on all sides.
What we all need to keep in mind is that America has been a cash cow for foreign churches. That cow is drying up. We are no longer an inexhaustible source of funds. We are growing, but many parishes report growth in demographic segments that can barely cover rent, much less contribute much to the overall financial health of local parishes. In such a situation, “kicking money” up to overlapping dioceses, foreign ecclesiastical structures, seminaries, and other ministries is a luxury that we can’t afford (even though numbers wise we are growing very rapidly). God’s will is going to be done, one way or the other.
I, for one, am so tired of all of this Russophobia now being directed toward the 1000 year old Russian Orthodox Church, both in Russia and abroad. Whatever craziness Putin is up to these days, has nothing whatsoever to do with the 1000 year old Russian Orthodox church that was founded in Kiev Ukraine in 988 AD, nor with Tzar Nicholas II, who financially supported many Russian Orthodox churches and efforts here in the USA during his brief reign, before he and his entire family were martyred by the Communists.
And yet, sadly many Russian Orthodox parishes throughout the USA are now feeling pressured into hiding their history and painting over their signs to remove the word “Russian” and leave only “Orthodox Church” on them. Parishes are afraid of becoming victims of attacks by those who hate what is going on between Russia and Ukraine.
But we simply cannot be pressured into turning our backs on our history and our heritage and on the Russian Saints like the Romanov Martyrs and St. Seraphim of Sarov and others, simply because they were Russian. And even though we change our names and paint over our signs, we cannot hide our clearly Russian domes and our three-tiered Russian crosses, can we?
We may be able to pretend that we are “just Orthodox”. But names like St. Vladimir’s and our architecture and our crosses are clear signs to all of who we actually are and we should not have to be ashamed of that.
This is not an emerging “Anti-Orthodox narrative”. That’s perhaps wishful thinking for some, or “zeal without knowledge” as St. Paul said.
The 2022 Volos declaration, signed by 1600 Orthodox academics and clerics, condemned the “Russian World” ideology as heretical and a deviation from the true Orthodox faith, dangerously conflating the Kingdom of God with the state. (Of course Americans also have a long history of conflating the Kingdom of God with the state.) People are now going to have to choose whether they side with the “Russian World” heresy or not. Although Rep. Joe Wilson may be misguided in claiming that those Orthodox clerics at the White House were spies, he was nonetheless on to something, and soon many others in government will join his voice. The purpose of autocephaly is precisely meant to protect the Orthodox faith from forces of nationalism like the “Russian World” heresy.
Ran the comment, only so that other Orthodox can be made very aware that people like you exist. The Russian Church, and whatever you think of the “Russian World”, are not involved in this discussion. Your comment completely illustrates the content of this article. The delegation was in Washington on behalf of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is not the ROC. You are framing a false narrative to obscure the true facts.
Please tell me who the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is part of. Are they autocephalous? Nobody, including the UOC, says so. The UOC’s 2022 meeting at Feofania attempted to separate themselves from the Moscow Patriarchate, but fell short of actually doing so. If they are still an autonomous church without autocephaly, then canonically they remain the jurisdiction of Moscow. The only reason why anybody considers the UOC canonical is because they are identified as an autonomous branch of the Russian Church.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is a fully self-governing Church that is still officially attached to Moscow, but which has zero contact with Moscow currently. These things can and do change over time. The UOC is governed by her synod, under Metropolitan Onuphry who is a native born Ukrainian. The UOC is completely independent and supportive of the Ukrainian War effort. Now, even if the UOC was the ROC, which she isn’t, there would still be no justification for the horrific persecution illustrated in the article above this very comment, not to mention documented by Fr. John Whiteford in a link above in the article. We could also direct you to multiple filings with the UN and the work of attorney Robert Amsterdam.
So Joseph, you are justifying the persecution of a religious minority on the basis of an official tie to Moscow that is completely and totally severed in the real world. That is what this comes down to. Temples can be stolen, little old ladies beaten, priests arrested – all because you feel that a fully self-governing Church isn’t good enough for you, and the people like you. So much for freedom of religion.
As for the canonical status – exactly 4 out of 14 (all Greek, all U.S. dominated) recognize OCU as canonical. That is not going to change. Everyone is aware that the UOC has cut ties with Moscow, and she is still canonical.
Yes, the UOC is being persecuted (which I neither advocate nor agree with), but why and to what end are they being persecuted? The Old Believers in Russia were persecuted also, ostensibly for their “Orthodoxy” even, but there are no Old Believer saints in the Orthodox Church.
1) So we agree the UOC is being unjustly persecuted, and the American delegation was absolutely right to protest this fact to Congress, which is funding Ukraine and enabling this persecution. 2) We are not in control of Russia. Quite the contrary. When try to destroy a nation economically and militarily, you lose all influence over that country if you don’t succeed. We haven’t succeeded, and the Russian Government is not about to listen to our protests on behalf of religious minorities at the moment. 3) Asking why there are no “Old Believer” saints in Orthodoxy is like asking why there are no Oriental Orthodox saints in Orthodoxy or post-schism Roman Catholic saints. Those are separate churches. They do not belong to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Does their separation from us justify ill-treatment by Russian authorities and the canonical Church? No. Not at all. You want us to denounce Christian persecution of Old Believers? Done. Denounced. Now, would the Russian Government be willing to listen to American citizens at the moment lecturing it about human rights with the UOC being banned by Kiev? Not at all. That is one of the biggest tragedies for Americans here. We have become the hypocrites we used to decry. We have zero moral authority. We can’t help any religious minorities in a nation which is officially on our “enemies” list. We can, perhaps, influence our own govt. Which is all that anyone is currently trying to do.
If the UOC would simply restore relations and communicate with the Patriarch of Constantinople, then the persecution of the UOC would stop. This was in fact proposed by Archbishop Sylvester of the UOC recently: “The hierarch noted that the issue of recognition of Ukrainian schismatics by the Patriarchate of Constantinople cannot be a reason for refusing to communicate with the Phanar. The bishop claims that despite the fact that the Church of Constantinople has ties with the OCU, all Local Churches, except for the Russian Orthodox Church, support Eucharistic communion with Constantinople, while not recognizing Ukrainian schismatics.”
https://raskolamnet.info/en/95788-ru-rektor-kdays-vystupyl-za-vozobnovlenye-dyaloga-upcz-s-konstantynopolskym-patryarhatom/
So to summarize, the beatings will stop as long as the UOC accedes to unconstitutional demands by a secular govt? Would you accept the U.S. govt to dictate ecclesiastical and Eucharistic arrangements to an American Orthodox jurisdiction? Well, maybe you would. But don’t count on the rest of us. Your answer also puts the Patriarch in the frame as an active participant in the persecution. It isn’t about being “Russian”, it is about being under control. Hence, the Patriarch of Constantinople is a system of control. Not a good look. Why would any of us want to be joined to a Patriarch who would participate in the abuse of innocent Christians? Is there really just a power play by the Patriarch in concert with the U.S. govt? If outside powers can decide, on pain of persecution, the Eucharistic and organizational arrangement of the UOC, then what can’t they dictate?
The Ukrainian government is only asking the UOC to fully and clearly separate itself from the jurisdiction of Russia, the aggressor country. That’s not a matter of theology or dogma. Considering that Russia is at war with Ukraine, it’s a reasonable request. Yet the UOC continues to obfuscate, delay and ignore this request, as if gambling that Russia will eventually win the war. It’s a game of “Let’s wait and see if Russia wins the war, then we won’t have to change anything”. However, if the UOC would simply restore communion with Constantinople (and Alexandria, Cyprus, and Greece), then that would be sufficient sign of a total break with Moscow. The fact that the UOC is only in communion with the very same small list of churches as Moscow is, it only reinforces the idea that the UOC belongs to the Russian Church.
“As a result of the Russian invasion, the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church met in Kiev 27 May 2022 to sever all existing ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. Below is a report from the organization Human Rights Without Frontiers:
In an address on May 17, 2025, Metropolitan Onufriy recalled that back on May 27, 2022, at the Council in Kyiv (Feofaniya), the UOC introduced changes to its Statute aiming at full canonical separation from the ROC. References to subordination to the Moscow Patriarchate were removed, the requirement to receive the blessing of Patriarch Kirill was abolished, and the name of the Moscow Patriarch is no longer commemorated during the worship service in the churches and monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
“The Council introduced a number of fundamental changes to the Statute on Governance, which confirmed the complete canonical independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its disassociation from the Moscow Patriarchate,” reads the Metropolitan’s statement.
Metropolitan Onufry, the head of the UOC, also emphasized that the UOC independently manages all aspects of its internal and external life, including the appointment of bishops, the establishment of dioceses, and the production of holy myrrh.
He asserts that after May 27, 2022, his Church is no longer part of the Moscow Patriarchate and hopes that “the whole family of Autocephalous Local Churches” will acknowledge their “canonical independence.”
https://orthodoxreflections.com/metropolitan-onuphry-of-ukraine-the-man-the-west-must-hide/
Persecution of Orthodox Christians is never reasonable. All the Emperor asked for was a pinch of incense offered to his effigy as a god. You can’t get around the fact that you support a secular govt demanding concessions from an Orthodox Church that the primate, Metropolitan Onuphry, has said is tantamount to putting the Orthodox Church under political control. That is what you support. At U.S. taxpayer expense. You can try to dress it up anyway you want, but that is the bottom line. Metropolitan Onuphry has an unblemished record of support for Ukraine’s position in this war, has declared total independence from Moscow with his synod, and is someone the West tries to avoid talking about. It destroys the narrative. The same narrative you are spreading here.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is in communion with at least 10 Orthodox Churches and their daughter jurisdictions around the world. That is compared to 4 for the OCU. In the U.S., only GOARCH recognizes OCU. When OCA, Antiochian, Serbian, Romanian etc. hierarchs visit Ukraine, they concelebrate with UOC clergy.
You are simply wrong. This is not reasonable. It will never be reasonable for a secular govt to dictate to the Orthodox Church over Church affairs. You will never win this argument. Not just in Orthodox terms, but also in U.S. Enlightenment terms as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
The Orthodox Church has almost always considered ruling governments to be a legitimate authority. This was the case for St. Paul under the pagan Roman government, it was the case for St. Tikhon under the Bolsheviks, it was the case for St. Gennadios under the Sultan. St. Paul even refers to the pagan government of his time as “God’s ministers” in Romans 13:
“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.”
The Ukrainian government is not insisting that the UOC join the OCU, and they are not asking the UOC to change any Orthodox dogmatic theology either. This is what they are asking for:
“According to Viktor Yelensky, DESS head, the UOC must make public letters in which it notifies of the withdrawal of its representatives from the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and all governing bodies of the ROC. Additionally, the UOC must inform the Local Orthodox Churches that it is no longer part of the ROC.”

Sounds easy enough. Why don’t they do it then?
Just a quick note. There is a difference between the church considering the state a legitimate authority and saying that the state has authority in/over the church. Dr. Jenkins, in the episodes dedicated to the council of Nicaea in Light through the Past notes that the latter idea is Arian in origin and has been denounced by many important saints. Just because it has continued to remain a temptation to be subservient to the state (and I think, historically, when under a Christian emperor, Constantinople was not much better than the Russian church seems to be today) does not make it any more than that: a temptation.
Yes, the state has a different kind of authority, and it is not over theology and dogmatic issues. The call, or need, for autocephaly, though, is a matter of state. The call for autocephaly has usually come from the state, not the church, although it is only the church that can grant autocephaly, not the state. In Russia, it was Ivan II who called a council in 1448 to elect a Metropolitan without Constantinople’s consent, thereby self-claiming autocephaly. When that self-claimed autocephaly proved to be non-canonical, it was Tsar Fyodor I who sought the Patriarch of Constantinople to legitimize that autocephaly in 1589. Another example, the King of Bulgaria, Boris I, made the call for Bulgaria’s autonomy, which was granted in 870, and then later Tsar Simeon I forced Constantinople to recognize Bulgaria’s full autocephaly with Patriarchal dignity in 927.
Yes, the church gave in to the state many times through history, in the cases you mentioned in organizational matters. I do not think it was a good thing then nor that it is a good thing in our day.
It would be very stupid for the OCA to withdraw from the Assembly of Bishops. ROCOR withdrew back in 2018 because all churches under Patriarch Kirill were required to withdraw This is the very proof that ROCOR, whether intentionally or not, does act as an agent of the Moscow Patriachate. Meanwhile, the OCA proved that it wasn’t an agent of the MP by remaining in the Assembly of Bishops and also by concelebrating with Patriarch Bartholomew.
Archpriest Thomas Soroka seems to find this labeling of “Moscow agent” to be amusing for some strange reason, but it makes very little sense to die a pointless death on the same hill as ROCOR.
Now is the time to embrace American autocephaly, rather than stupidly rejecting it like ROCOR is currently doing.
Bait used to be believable. Begone, fed!
As Nicholas states in their article, podcaster Fr. Thomas Soroka has called for OCA (and hopefully more jurisdictions besides) to suspend membership.
I recommend becoming familiar with the Assembly of Bishops by visiting https://www.assemblyofbishops.org/.
To find out who in your jurisdiction serves on the Assembly of Bishops, go to Directories, then scroll down to Bishops. Each bishop’s name and mailing address is listed.
Be respectful, keep it short and to the point. I recommend referring to this article.
If wanting to express your concerns to the Assembly as a group, go to: https://www.assemblyofbishops.org/contact/
Nicholas,
Thanks for spelling out 7 specific calls to action we can (we must!) take in defending the true faith against heretics, globalists and imposters. It’s our duty as both laity and clergy, is it not? I am sharing this article with my priest, bishop and metropolitan with a specific request for their guidance. I urge all readers to do likewise. Pray that our efforts are NOT met with the usual silence.
Nicholas, please write a follow up on developments and calls to action as you have them. Again, many thanks.
Serious questions: what would you advise American Orthodox of the GOAA to do? Should we go so far as to stop attending Liturgy in GOAA parishes? Refrain from Communion? At a bare minimum, it’s not unreasonable to withhold financial support from our parish/Metropolis, but are there other courses of action to register protest with the GOAA?
A serious question, you are correct on that. So you could just go to another jurisdiction personally. But that has very little impact. GOARCH is used to attrition. The numbers indicate that only around 10% of those with Greek ethnicity are even in communion with GOARCH. If you quietly leave, then you just become another statistic. Clearly, should you stay, you should not financially support any of the toxic arms of the GOARCH such as the Archons or cash appeals that go straight to NYC or Constantinople.
What would be effective is talking to your fellow parishioners and seeing how you can work together (in a group) to to frighten the top leadership of GOARCH. If you look at recent protests up in New York, you will notice that they have had an effect. GOARCH does not want to have to deal with large numbers of angry parishioners. They would prefer if you just quietly left. So maybe don’t leave? Instead, start talking to your priest and fellow parishioners about how to get GOARCH’s attention. That could be cutting your donations that flow up. That could be refusing, publicly, to raise money for anything above the parish level. It could be cancelling participation in national activities. It could mean cancelling hierarchical visits, which parishes have to pay for. “No, Your Eminence, we are interested in shelling out so you can come visit us when we are angry with you.”
Just spit balling here, as your fellow parishioners could have way better ideas.
Metropolitans and Archbishops depend on the laity for funding. Yes, there are megadonors and they get most of the attention. But those megadonations are not what keeps the lights on. It is common for pundits to encourage people to leave GOARCH. The problem with that strategy is that, over time, you end up with a jurisdiction shorn of the most serious Orthodox Christians. That smacks of the wrong approach. The trick is – how to be a faithful Orthodox Christian under Constantinople, while not getting sucked into complicity with what is going wrong on so many fronts? That is something we are grappling with. So start talking to your parishioners as a first start, and see where it goes from there.
Sadly, there is a division in the Global Orthodox Church. Those who are led by the teachings of Jesus Christ as contained in the Gospels, and those who don’t and apologise for war crimes and war criminals. In the Holy Days the heretics would be handled by a Bishop, Metropolitan, or Patriarch. Tragically some of the heretics hold these very same positions. When needed these heretics could be dealt with at an Ecumenical Council, or if you show up, at a Pan Orthodox Council. The truth sometimes hurts, but pain can create an opportunity for spiritual growth. When in doubt consult the Gospels and beware of False Phophets. Follow the money. Photos of complicity are in the public domain. It’s a sad time for Orthodoxy. Calling St John Chyrsostom.
Metropolitan Onuprhy is a heir to St. John Chrysostom. Say his name Mike. Look at his face. Tell me why he should be crucified along with his Ukrainian flock?
