Q&A Toronto Update and New Open Letter on Communion in Toronto

Dear Friends in Christ:

May God be glorified for the outcomes of the Q&A Tour that began today (7/19/2020) at our Holy Archdiocese.

I was delighted to meet some of you there for the first time face to face, and to be reacquainted with others whom I had known from before. There was a very special atmosphere of Christian Orthodox Fellowship there today, which we had greatly missed during the Covid-19 lockdown and the subsequent calamity that befell our Church surrounding the issues of Holy Communion. We have renewed hope that this will be set aright, so here are the updates for those who could not be there:

  1. The gathering was large but not too large to be accommodated by the outdoor area in front of the main door of the Archdiocese with the social distancing.
  2. The gathering was very peaceful. We sang hymns, prayed the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed and we also sang the Greek and Canadian national anthems. We could be heard by those inside who were holding the meeting (described below)
  3. There was no aggression and no police. The signs people made were very impressive with true Orthodox messages about the sanctity of Holy Communion.
  4. Before I arrived, his Eminence, Archbishop Sotirios, also polite and courteous, invited some people inside for a face to face meeting. Only 8 people were allowed to go in due to social distancing. These people were as follows:
    • His Eminence
    • MPP Christina Mitas
    • 4 lay people representing two groups
    • 2 independent persons
  5. A member of the media also arrived but was not permitted to attend the indoor meeting as no recordings were permitted by his Eminence.
  6. His Eminence did not permit anyone to voice record the meeting but he recorded it himself
  7. After the meeting, MPP Christina Mitas spoke to the crowd and affirmed that there is NO provincial law that mandates how Holy Communion can be distributed in Ontario Churches. In other words, there is NO provincial law against the common spoon. I have attached two of the most recent government documents that were sent to AK, along with a letter from her MPP, in response to our template letters. Most of us have seen these before but didn’t know if or how they applied to Holy Communion as we are not lawyers. In fact, they don’t apply, for, as we had thought, they are not laws but recommendations. Therefore, despite these documents, and despite that we are currently still operating under the Emergency Act which has been extended until July 29th, these are still just recommendations and NOT laws that prevent us from taking HC with a common spoon.
  8. His Eminence also affirmed he had nothing in writing from any level of government mandating how the Orthodox Church may or may not distribute Holy Communion. He had a few verbal conversations with some government officials and he gave the directive to adopt multiple communion spoons based on a complaint from a Greek parishioner to the Public Health Department.
  9. His Eminence also mentioned that he wrote a letter to Patriarch Bartholomew two days ago, regarding the issue of multiple spoons in Canada.
  10. Now that we have ruled out the Province, we still need to confirm with the City of Toronto whether or not any directive came from this Municipality, but if it did, it too, was not in writing.

Conclusions:

  1. His Eminence Archbishop Sotirios failed to do his due diligence in procuring and producing written directives from government officials regarding changes he had already made to the distribution of Holy Communion
  2. His Eminence Archbishop Sotirios failed to do due his due diligence in procuring and producing written permission and consent for the use of multiple communion spoons from his All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew. He said he wrote the patriarch a letter regarding his initiative days after implementing the multiple communion spoons.
  3. This information was derived directly from four people – three of the individuals who were present at the meeting and from MPP Christina Mitas who spoke to the crowd after the meeting.

If further information becomes available you will be the first to know. In the meantime, please continue to pray. We were all nervous about today but nothing unpleasant or “extremist” took place.

God has heard our heartfelt prayers and the intercessions of the Holy Virgin who was moved by the tears of the faithful. Indeed, He is an infinitely compassionate and merciful God.

However, we cannot “rest on our laurels” as there is much work to be done.

There was a good representation of all our parishes at the Archdiocese yesterday and also MPP Mitas office has put an FOI in with the City.

A lawyer and parishioner of Agio Panteleimon has reached out to me and I have since gave him MPP Mitas & George’s contact information. I would like to forward this email to him and to my friends relatives etc whom are completely confused about this entire situation. At least now they can see a glimpse of what we have been trying to find out.

An Open Letter to his Eminence, Archbishop of Canada, Sotirios

Your Eminence, on Sunday, July 5th, your flock was unexpectedly shocked and deeply grieved during Divine Liturgy, to learn that the Holy Eucharist would not be offered at all; and one week later, on July 12th, we were again shocked to learn minutes before its distribution, that the Eucharist would be offered with multiple spoons. It was also reported by various clergy during the announcement of this new directive, that in the weeks prior, you had numerous meetings with them. However, at no time did you invite any faithful laity to participate or to garner their opinion, nor did you reach out to us to forewarn us with pastoral comfort. The circulating reasons as to why you would want to keep us in the dark until the last possible moment are as numerous as they are grievous.

From the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, you, your Eminence, made only two public statements: that you would follow the directives of (i) our local Government and (ii) our Patriarchate. Meanwhile, up until June 2nd, 2020, our Patriarchate made only one public statement regarding the pandemic, that each jurisdiction should follow the directives of their local government. Other than this, there was absolutely no leadership and no pastoral support of the parishes in Greece or Canada from our hierarchs. Instead, our churches were closed and with only two unwavering statements for guidance, we were abandoned to suffer completely alone, fearing for the fate of our Church, worrying about the various circulating conspiracy  theories regarding our Church, fending off on our own the insults and abuses of Orthodox worship in the media, and enduring Greek government officials who took advantage of the Covid-19 crisis to silence the voice of the gospel even on the internet. These are just a few examples of the trials and tribulations we were left to endure alone. During this darkest of times, only a handful of grass roots priests and monks from across the miles, tirelessly and courageously offered pastoral and spiritual support to us by every electronic means possible. Neither you nor our Ecumenical Patriarchate gave any indication of negotiating on our behalf with government officials regarding the re-opening of churches or made any attempt to have governments classify church worship as an ‘essential’ service. A huge list of Heterodox churches petitioned the Ontario Provincial government on this matter, but sadly, the Greek Orthodox Church of Canada was not on this list.

Even worse, here in Canada, our clergy were chastised and forbidden from discussing any matters pertaining to the opening of churches and the distribution of Holy Communion with any of their parishioners during the Covid-19 crisis. This directive for silence to our clergy is in your letter to them dated June 5th 2020. Here, you make reference to the June 2, 2020 letter of our Patriarch Bartholomew.  Whereas his All-Holiness Bartholomew eventually gave the Orthodox faithful his formal reassurance that the mode of distribution of the Holy Eucharist should and would not be compromised even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic (which we received like precious drops of water in the desert), you misquoted his words in your June 5th letter in order to silence our clergy.

In your letter of June 5th, you falsely state, “his All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with his respected letter dated 02/06/2020, to all the hierarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, asks from them: ‘Avoid making statements, comments and interviews through the use of mass media and avoid engaging in other initiatives regarding the current situation.’” In fact, there is no such statement in the June 2, 2020 letter from the Patriarch.

You go on to say, your Eminence, that you “will continue not to make statements, without first obtaining instructions from our Ecumenical Patriarchate, because [you] believe that the Church is the Body of Christ. It is One and Holy. It is one family. No one should speak on their own authority (hierarchs, priests, deacons, professors or any other Orthodox Christian) regarding these very serious matters.” When our Lord and the Holy Fathers of our Church spoke of ONE church and ONE body of Christ and ONE spiritual family, and being ONE with each other and God, it was always in the context of our union with the ONE God and never in the context of taking away our spiritual freedoms or our freedom of speech.

On June 26, 2020, our Ecumenical Patriarch circulated the following statement in which he explicitly writes that two criteria are necessary to exercise any type of ‘economia’ as relates to the distribution of Holy Communion: (i) there must be a specific or national state law that prohibits Holy Communion and following this, (ii) the consent and permission of the Ecumencial Patriarchate is still required to exercise any type of ‘economia’.

Your Eminence, on Sunday July 12th, our parish priests in Ontario suddenly announced for the first time, your new directive that because of legal requirements, Holy Communion will now be distributed using multiple spoons in the Greek Orthodox churches of Canada. The phrase because of legal requirements was never provided by you in writing your Eminence. Rather, it was verbally uttered from the pulpits of the Greek Orthodox churches of Ontario by the clergy to whom you had given the verbal order.

To clarify further, in the Province of Ontario, only the City of Toronto under the jurisdiction of Mayor John Tory, has indicated in writing that all communion services should be suspended. This is not state law, as Toronto is a city and not a state. It can also be argued according to our legal sources, that this is not even law, but a recommendation or advice which requires the free cooperation of the individual since such a recommendation or advice is contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Indeed, many jurisdictional public health updates which recommend the suspension of communion services, are titled, “Covid-19 Advice” or “Covid-19 Guidance”. To date, and as confirmed by MPP Christina Mitas at today’s Q&A Tour which began at the Canadian Archdiocese, there is no national Canadian or provincial Ontario (state) law that interferes with communion services, even under the Emergency Act.

Furthermore, the Toronto recommendation was to “suspend” communion and made no reference to its mode of distribution, meaning, NO communion whatsoever, not even with multiple spoons. It was further clarified at today’s Q&A Tour, a peaceful gathering of Orthodox faith confessors at the Archdiocese, that you never received any written directives from the Province of Ontario regarding the mode of distribution of Holy Communion and that such discussions were carried out verbally and over the phone.

This means, your Eminence, that in your July 15th Encyclical: Coronavirus and Holy Communion: A Chronicle of Events, your statement “I contacted the government authorities and it was decided that Holy Communion should take place as described below:” the directive to commune with multiple spoons was decided by you and you alone.

To fulfill the criteria of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the implementation of multiple communion spoons in the Greek Orthodox Churches anywhere in Canada, not only must you provide a document of National or Provincial law, which we now know does not exist, you must also demonstrate documentation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, giving you consent and permission to use multiple communion spoons, which you clearly do not have. Since, in Ontario, only Toronto churches were affected by the recommendation (not law) to suspend communion services, this patriarchial consent and permission only pertains to Toronto churches and not to all the Greek Orthodox churches of Canada. Your over-reaching and unlawful directive, however, addresses all Greek Orthodox churches in the entire country.

Your inability to provide any such documentation explains why you went to the trouble of holding multiple meetings with our clergy subsequent to May 29th, why you surprised us with last minute liturgical changes and why you deliberately misquoted our Patriarch’s letter of June 2nd to justify your chastisement of our clergy into silence. Because you have no meritorious legal or ecclesiastical basis for imposing multiple spoons on the Greek Orthodox parishes of Canada, you must use force and fear on our suffering clergy and subversive manipulation of the faithful to fulfil your agenda, which also explains why you have felt it necessary to retain a lawyer regarding this matter.

Speaking of your agenda, can you please tell us what that is? The same question was asked of Archbishop Elpidophoros in a letter posted June 15th 2020, when he introduced multiple communion spoons in the United States, and we are still waiting for his reply.

To date, besides you, Archbishop Elpidophoros is the only other hierarch who introduced multiple communion spoons in North America, and also by means of secrecy. According to the Greek News article,  Archbishop Elpidophoros directed the parish priests of New York, Connecticut and Washington, D.C. to offer Holy Communion by using multiple metal spoons for single use during the distribution. He gave this directive in a memo dated May 18th, which was marked “for priests only” and which “should not under any circumstances be posted, shared or copied to email or social media.” His message eerily echoes your message to your clergy in your June 5th letter to them. After his introduction of multiple communion spoons with little resistance in the United States (or perhaps he ignored it), you followed suit, using the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse and the complaint of a single misguided parishioner to municipal health authorities, which was blown out of proportion.

Archbishop Elpidophoros’ memo of May 18th 2020 was circulated exactly one day after both of you received our Patriarch’s May 17th letter to the Orthodox Primates which prohibited any changes to the mode of distribution of Holy Communion. However, the Patriarch’s letter was not made public until June 2nd 2020. The reasons for this delay are unclear but the delay gave Archbishop Elpidophoros enough time to implement the multiple communion spoons thereby eluding the perception of disobedience to our Ecumenical Patriarchate.

It is disappointing that our Patriarch has not removed him for his blatant disobedience but there is a plausible explanation for this apparent idiosyncrasy which we will suggest below. Is it a coincidence that the only two Archbishops of the North American continent have both of them, and with no undue pressure from their civil authorities, their clergy or the faithful, arbitrarily implemented the use of multiple communion spoons with the full knowledge that they were doing so in direct opposition to their Patriarch and with no repercussions from him?

Perhaps his All-Holiness Bartholomew is a very kind and forgiving man; or does he have a secret agenda of his own? For years now, the Orthodox world has watched Orthodox Primates make step by step progress towards ecumenism, a controversial movement which they and the Popes of Rome support. It is their ardent desire to unite with Rome and other Heterodox churches. This achievement would be most acceptable, admirable and holy, but only if Heterodox churches and other schismatics returned to the embrace of Orthodoxy, the Mother Church.

Praise be to God that we have witnessed such returns, but not so much because of the efforts of Orthodox Primates. In most cases, it is the Heterodox individual who embarks on a personal search for the Truth which leads them to the Orthodox Faith.  What we have seen from many Orthodox Primates is a systematic deterioration of Orthodox practice and dogma, as with the acceptance of Heterodox baptism for example, to encourage a non-canonical union with Heterodox churches. The ultimate step, of course, would be the non-canonical sharing with them, of our Holy Chalice, in a way that did not require their conversion. After all, would it not be much easier to change our communion canons than to change the hearts and minds of all the Heterodox?

This last step would make Ecumenism complete and the Holy Orthodox Chalice could be offered, unimpeded by any dogmatic restrictions, to all persons, Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike. Then, everyone would be free to belong to the church of their choice, believe in the dogmas of their choice, but also participate in each other’s church services and sacraments without any impediment. What better way, then, to bring about a change to the canons regarding Holy Communion than using a virus as a pretext for altering the mode of its distribution for the ‘safety’ of the laity who in reality need no protection from the immaculate Body and Blood of Christ.

If the practice of the multiple communion spoon successfully takes root in the West – in New York and Ontario – It will only be a matter of time before the weeds spread to the remainder of the continent and across the Atlantic. The more accustomed the laity become to the multiple communion spoons, the easier it will be to gain more skeptical converts and the harder it will be for the Orthodox to go back to the Holy Tradition of the “common” element. Some hierarchs may be hoping that the reason for continuing adherence to the multiple communion spoons will gradually evolve into a more modern belief that the Eucharist may, in fact, be capable of transmitting disease.  The recurring experience and knowledge that communicable diseases have never been transmitted through the common cup or spoon will eventually be forgotten. Instead, more modern scientific principles will prevail and an eventual change in dogma would be the outcome. Perhaps the Covid-19 opportunity has made it too hard to resist such a diabolical experiment on the North American Continent.

Nevertheless, this is exactly how the Popes corrupted the church in the West: by deliberately misinterpreting Holy Scripture, by fabricating documents to alter dogma, by bullying conscientious clergy into silence, and by using secrecy, coercion and even inquisitions. The tragic end result of this corruption is well known as it led to the Protestant Reformation and culminated in the ecclesiological modifications of the second Vatican council of 1962.

But what is the position of our Patriarchate? After two letters stressing that the mode of distributing Holy Communion should not change, the third made an exception for extenuating circumstances for the sake of ‘economia’. The problem, however, is that our Patriarch has not enforced what he has written, not with Archbishop Elpidophoros and not with you, your Eminence since both of you are still occupying your posts. Instead, our Patriarch barely objected to the disobedience you both showed. One may wonder if this could have something to do with his close relationship with the Pope of Rome.

One may also wonder if our Patriarch, himself, wishes to introduce the multple communion spoons but rightly considers that doing so may be too risky in Greece where there is a much larger and more concentrated Orthodox population which would probably be up in arms if he dared introduce this concept there. The attempt would run a very high risk of a very quick failure. In North America, however, the climate is, literally and figuratively, very different. Our Orthodox people are greatly outnumbered by other faiths and creeds and most of the Orthodox here are immigrants or descended from immigrants. In other words, they are generally either sufficiently poorly educated or sufficiently immersed in the North American culture so as to pose a much smaller threat to the success of such a hypothetical, but diabolical scheme – the scheme to use North America as the experimental ground for the introduction of the common communion spoon and eventually, the shared chalice. If accepted, this type of ecumenism will destroy Holy Orthodoxy, but will render much greater power to the new hierarchs of a non-canonically united global church with all its secular perks.

At this point, you may once again characterize us as ”self-destructive…extremists…so willingly ready to inflict harm.” The truth is, that if there are such people, they are not us. Just like the Covid-19 virus has uncovered the hearts and minds of a great many people, time will also reveal who the destructive extremists really are. We hope and pray that this will not be you, your Eminence.

We also hope that we are very wrong about our Holy Patriarch Bartholomew. If we are wrong, please realize that you and Archbishop Elpidophoros have, by your covert methods and unlawful actions, given rise to the grievous fears and postulations we have outlined here in this letter. The two of you have cast a shadow of mistrust and defamation upon our Holy Patriarch by impaling the hearts and souls of Orthodox believers with your arbitrary heresy of multiple communion spoons.

Your speedy removals as Archbishops will be the only satisfactory proof that his All-Holiness Bartholomew is innocent of such allegations and is a right and true Orthodox leader.

Σεβασμιωτατε,

Την Κυριακη 5 Ιουλιου, κατα την διαρκεια της Θ. Λειτουργιας, το ποιμνιο σας ευρεθη αιφνιδιως σε κατασταση αμηχανιας και βαθυτατης θλιψεως, μαθαινοντας οτι η Θεια Ευχαριστια δεν επροκετο να προσφερθει.  Και μια εβδομαδα αργοτερα, στις 12 Ιουλιου, σοκαριστηκαμε και παλι με το να μαθουμε λιγες στιγμες προ της μεταδοσεως της, οτι η Θεια Κοινωνια θα προσφεροταν με πολλαπλα «κουταλια». Επισης, κατα την διαρκεια της ανακοινωσης αυτης της καινης οδηγιας, αναφερθηκε απο διαφορους κληρικους οτι κατα την διαρκεια των προηγουμενων εβδομαδων, ειχατε πολλαπλες συσκεψεις με τους ιδιους.  Εκ τουτου ομως, ουδεποτε προσκαλεσατε τον πιστο λαο να συμμετασχει, η να περισυλλεξετε την γνωμη του, και ουτε καν μας προσεγγισατε για να μας προειδοποιησετε με την ποιμαντικη σας στοργη.  Οι λογοι που κυκλοφορουν για τους οποιους θα θελατε να μας κρατησετε  «εν σκοτια» μεχρι τελευταιας στιγμης ειναι τοσοι πολλοι οσο και θλιβεροι.

Απο αρχης της πανδημιας του Covid-19, εκαματε μονο δυο ανακοινωσεις – οτι θα ακολουθουσατε τις οδηγιες α) της τοπικης μας Κυβερνησεως, και β) του Πατριαρχειου μας.  Εν τω μεταξυ, μεχρι και τις 2 Ιουνιου του 2020, το Πατριαρχειο μας εξεδωσε μονο ενα δημοσιο ανακοινοθεν περι της Πανδημιας, οτι εκαστη επισκοπη θα πρεπει να ακολουθησει της οδηγιες της τοπικης της κυβερνησεως. Εκτος τουτων, δεν υπηρξε ουδεμια απολυτως ηγετικη και ποιμαντικη υποστηριξη των ενοριων απο τους ιεραρχες, εν Ελλαδι και Καναδα.  Αντιθετως, οι εκκλησιες μας εκλεισαν, και με παρα μονο δυο βασικες δηλωσεις σαν «οδηγια»,  εγκαταλειφθηκαμε για να υποφερουμε εντελως μονοι, φοβουμενοι το μελλον της Εκκλησιας, ανησυχουντες για τις διαφορες θεωριες συννομοσιας που αφορουν την Εκκλησια μας, υπερασπιζοντας μονοι μας τις υβρεις και τις φραστικες επιθεσεις κατα της Ορθοδοξης λατρειας στα μεσα ενημερωσης, και υπομενοντας Ελληνες κυβερνητες αξιωματουχους οι οποιοι επωφεληθηκαν της κρισης του Covid-19, για να φιμωσουν την φωνη του Ευαγγελιου, ακομη και στο διαδυκτιο. Αυτα ειναι μονο λιγα παραδειγματα απο τις δοκιμασιες και τις δυσκολιες τις οποιες αφεθηκαμε μονοι να αντιμετωπισουμε.  Κατα αυτους τους σκοτεινοτατους καιρους, μονο μια χουφτα κοινων-απλοϊκων ιερεων και μοναχων, απο μεγαλης αποστασεως, ακουραστα και θαρραλεα, μας προσεφεραν ποιμαντικη και πνευματικη υποστηριξη δια παντος δυνατου ηλεκτρονικου μεσου.  Ουτε Εσεις, ουτε το Οικουμενικο Πατριαρχειο εδωσε καποια ενδειξη οτι διαπραγματευοταν υπερ ημων με κυβερνητικους αξιωματουχους για το θεμα της επαναλειτουργιας των εκκλησιων, ουτε καν κανατε αποπειρες να καταταξουν οι κυβερνισεις την εκκλησιαστικη λατρεια ως «αναγκαια» υπηρεσια.  Πληθος ετεροδοξων εκκλησιων υπεβαλλαν αιτηματα στην Περιφεριακη κυβερνηση του Ονταριο περι αυτου του θεματος, αλλα μετα θλιψεως, η Ελληνικη Ορθοδοξος Εκκλησια του Καναδα δεν συμπεριλαμβανοταν στον ιδιο καταλογο.

Ακομα χειροτερα, εδω στον Καναδα, ο κληρος μας «κατσαδιαστηκε» και του απαγορευτηκε να συζητησει οποιοδηποτε θεμα σε οτι αφορουσε το ανοιγμα των εκκλησιων και της μεταδοσεως της Θειας Κοινωνιας, με οποιονδηποτε ενοριτη, κατα την διαρκεια της κρισης του Covid-19.  Η σχετικη φιμωτικη οδηγια προς τους ιερεις μας βρισκεται στην επιστολη σας της 5ης Ιουνιου, 2020.  Εντος αυτης, αναφερεσθε στην απο της 2ης Ιουνιου επιστολη του Πατριαρχου μας Βαρθολομαιου.  Ενω ο Παναγιοτατος κ. Βαρθολομαιος εν συνεχεια εδωσε στους Ορθοδοξους πιστους την επισημη διαβεβαιωση του οτι ο τροπος μεταδοσεως της Θειας Κοινωνιας δεν θα επρεπε και ουτε πρεπει να υποστει καμια μετατροπη, ακομη και ενωπιον  της πανδημιας Covid-19, (και την οποια διευκρινιση λαβαμε ως σταγονες υδατος εν τη ερημω), εσεις δε, παρερμηνευσατε τα λογια του στην επιστολη σας στις 5 Ιουνιου, για να φιμωσετε τον κληρο μας.

Στην κατα της 5ης Ιουνιου επιστολη σας, ψευδως δηλωνετε οτι,  «ο Παναγιωτατος Οικουμενικος Πατριαρχης Βαρθολομαιος, με την επιστολη του στις 02/06/2020 προς παντας τους ιεραρχας του Οικουμενικου Πατριαρχειου ζητει απ’αυτους: – «Αποφυγετε να κανετε δηλωσεις, παρατηρησεις, και συνεντευξεις δια των μεσων μαζικης ενημερωσης, και να αποφευγετε την ενασκηση αλλων πρωτοβουλιων δια την παρουσαν κατασταση».»  Εκ των πραγματων ομως, ΔΕΝ υπαρχει καμια τετοια δηλωση στην απο την 2ης Ιουνιου, 2020 επιστολη του Πατριαρχου.

Συνεχιζετε Σεβασμιωτατε, να δηλωνετε οτι εσεις (ο κληρος) «θα συνεχισετε να μην κανετε δηλωσεις χωρις πρωτα να λαβετε οδηγιες απο το Οικουμενικο μας Πατριαρχειο, επειδη πιστευετε οτι η Εκκλησια ειναι το Σωμα του Χριστου.  Ειναι Μια και Αγια. Ειναι μια οικογενεια. Ουδεις πρεπει να ομιλει κατα την δικη του αρμοδιοτητα (ιεραρχες, ιερεις, διακονοι, καθηγητες, η κανεις αλλος Ορθοδοξος Χριστιανος) για αυτα τα πολυ σοβαρα θεματα.» Οταν ο Κυριος μας και οι Αγιοι Πατερες της Εκκλησιας μιλουσαν για ΜΙΑ εκκλησια, και ΕΝΑ σωμα του Χιστου, και ΜΙΑ οικογενεια, οντας μια ΕΝΟΤΗΤΑ με ολους και τον ΘΕΟ, ηταν παντα υπο του πλαισιου της ενοτητος μας με την ΜΙΑ Θεοτητα, και ουδεποτε στα πλαισια της υφαρπαγης της πνευματικης και εκφραστικης ελευθεριας μας.

Στις 26 Ιουνιου 2020, ο Οικουμενικος μας Πατριαρχης κυκλοφορησε την ακολουθη δηλωση, στην οποια συγκεκριμενα γραφει οτι δυο κριτηρια χρειαζονται για να ασκηθει οποιαδηποτε «οικονομια» σε ο’τι αφορα την μεταδοση της Θειας Κοινωνιας: α) να υπαρχει ενας συγκεκριμενος η κρατικος νομος που απαγορευει την Θεια Κοινωνια, και κατ’εξακολουθηση β) χρειαζεται η συγκαταθεση και αδεια του Οικουμενικου Πατριαρχειου για να ασκηθει οποιαδηποτε «οικονομια».

Το πρωτοτυπο:

α) να υπάρχει από τον νόμο του κράτους κάποια απαγόρευση σχετικά με τη θεία λατρεία λόγω της πανδημίας, και

β) ύστερα από τη σύμφωνη γνώμη και την προς τούτο άδεια της Μητρός Εκκλησίας Κωνσταντινουπόλεως.

Πάντως δεν αφορά στην αλλαγή του τρόπου μεταδόσεως, πολλω δε μάλλον στη χρήση πολλαπλών ή μιας χρήσεως αγίων λαβίδων.

 Σεβασμιωτατε, στις 12 Ιουλιου 2020, οι ενοριακοι ιερεις μας στο Ονταριο αιφνιδιως ανακοινωσαν για πρωτη φορα, την νεα σας οδηγια, οτι λογω νομικων προυποθεσεων, η Θεια Κοινωνια θα μεταδιδεται τωρα δια της χρησεως πολλαπλων «κουταλιων» στις Ελληνορθοδοξες Εκκλησιες του Καναδα.  Η φραση «λογω νομικων προυποθεσεων» δεν δοθηκε απο εσας εγγραφως, Σεβασμιωτατε.  Μαλλον, εκφραστηκε προφορικα απο τους αμβωνες των Ελληνορθοδοξων εκκλησιων του Ονταριο απο τους ιερεις στους οποιους δωσατε τις προφορικες σας οδηγιες.

Περαιτερω, στην περιφερεια του Ονταριο, μονο η Πολις του Τοροντο υπο την δικαιοδοσια του δημαρχου John Tory εξεδωσε εγγραφως  ανακοινωση οτι ολες οι λατρευτικες εκδηλωσεις που συμπεριλαμβανουν την Κοινωνια θα πρεπει να ανασταλλουν.  Αυτο δεν ειναι νομος του κρατους, επειδη η Πολις του Τοροντο ειναι πολη και οχι Πολιτεια.  Μπορει επισης να αγορευθει κατα την αποψη των νομικων μας πηγων, οτι δεν ειναι καν νομος, αλλα μια προταση η οδηγια η οποια απαιτει την ελευθερη συνεργασια του καθε ατομου, επειδη τετοιου ειδους προταση η οδηγια ειναι αντιθετη με το Καναδικο Καταστατικο των Δικαιωματων και της Ελευθεριας.  Αληθως, πολλαπλες τοπικες δημοσιο-υγειονομικες αναφορες οι οποιες προτεινουν την αναστολη της λατρευτικης Κοινωνιας, εχουν τον τιτλο «Συμβουλες»  η «Οδηγιες» για το Covid-19. Μεχρι σημερα, και οπως επιβεβαιωθηκε απο την Κοινοβουλευτρια κα. Christina Mitas στην σημερινη περιοδεια ερωταποκρισεων η οποια ξεκινησε στην Καναδικη Αρχιεπισκοπη, δεν υφισταται κανενας κρατικος Καναδικος η πολιτειακος (του Ονταριο) νομος που να προξενει παρεμβολες στο τελετουργικο της Θειας Κοινωνιας, ακομη και υπο του Νομου περι Εκτακτης Αναγκης.  Περεταιρω δε, η προταση του Τοροντο ηταν η «αναστολη» της Κοινωνιας, και δεν διατυπωσε καμμια αναφορα στον τροπο της μεταδοσεως της…δηλαδη ΚΑΘΟΛΟΥ κοινωνια, ουτε με πολλαπλα «κουταλια». Διευκρινιστηκε δε στην σημερινη περιοδεια ερωταποκρισεων, μια ειρηνικη συγκεντρωση ομολογητων της Ορθοδοξου Πιστεως στην Αρχιεπισκοπη, οτι ουδεποτε λαβατε γραπτες οδηγιες απο την Περιφερεια του Ονταριο, σχετικα με τον τροπο μεταδοσης της Θειας Κοινωνιας, και οτι τετοιες συζητησεις ειχαν διεξαχθει προφορικως δια του τηλεφωνου.

Αυτο σημαινει Σεβασμιωτατε, οτι η δηλωση στην εγκυκλιο Σας της 15ης Ιουλιου – «επικοινωνησα με τις κυβερνητικες αρχες και αποφασιστηκε οτι η Θεια Κοινωνια θα πρεπει να διεξαχθει ως ακολουθως:» – δηλαδη η οδηγια να διεξαχθει η Θεια Κοινωνια με πολλαπλα «κουταλια» αποφασισθηκε απο Εσας, και μονο Εσας.

Για να εκπληρωθουν τα κριτηρια του Οικουμενικου Πατριαρχειου σε οτι αφορα την επιβολη πολλαπλων «κουταλιων» σε Ελληνορθοδοξες Εκκλησιες οπουδηποτε στον Καναδα, οχι μονο πρεπει να προσκομισετε κειμενο Κρατικου η Πολιτειακου νομου, το οποιο γνωριζουμε πλεον οτι δεν υφισταται, αλλα πρεπει επισης να αναδειξετε κειμενο του Οικουμενικου Πατριαρχειου, δινοντας Σας συγκαταθεση και αδεια για την χρηση πολλαπλων «κουταλιων», την οποια προφανως δεν εχετε.  Επειδη στο Ονταριο, μονο οι εκκλησιες του Τοροντο ησαν επιρεασμενες απο την προταση (οχι νομο) να ανασταλλει η λατρευτικη Κοινωνια, αυτη η Πατριαρχικη συγκαταθεση και αδεια αφορα μονο τις εκκλησιες του Τοροντο, και οχι ολες τις Ελληνορθοδοξες εκκλησιες του Καναδα.  Η υπερβολικη και παρατυπη σας οδηγια ομως, αναφερεται σε ολες τις Ελληνορθοδοξες εκκλησιες σε ολη την χωρα.

Η αδυναμια Σας να προσκομισετε τετοια εγγραφα, εξηγει τον λογο που δαπανησατε τοση προσπαθεια κανοντας πολλαπλες συσκεψεις με τους κληρικους κατοπιν της 29η Μαιου, οσο και τον λογο που μας αιφνιδιασατε με λειτουργικες αλλαγες της τελευταιας στιγμης, και επισης τον λογο που σκοπιμως παραφρασατε την επιστολη του Πατριαρχου μας, την απο 2ης Ιουνιου, για να δικαιολογησετε τον φοβερισμο του κληρου «εις σιωπην».  Επειδη δεν εχετε θεμελιωμενες νομικες η εκκλησιαστικες βασεις για την επιβολη πολλαπλων «κουταλιων» στις Ελληνορθοδοξες κοινοτητες του Καναδα, αναγκαζεστε να χρησιμοποιειτε δυναμη εξουσιας και φοβου επι του υποφεροντος κληρου μας, οπως και υποχθονιες χειραγωγιες των πιστων για να εκπληρωθη ο σκοπος σας, το οποιο επισης εξηγει τον λογο για τον οποιο νιωσατε την αναγκη να συμβουλευθειτε δικηγορο για αυτη την υποθεση.

Αναφορικα με τον σκοπο σας, μπορειτε παρακαλουμε να μας πειτε ποιος είναι αυτος;  Το ιδιο ερωτημα τεθηκε στον Αρχιεπισκοπο Ελπιδοφορο σε επιστολη της 15ης Ιουνιου 2020, οταν ο ιδιος εισηγαγε πολλαπλα «κουταλια» Κοινωνιας στις Ηνωμενες Πολιτειες, και ακομα αναμενουμε την απαντηση του.

Μεχρι σημερα, εκτος απο Εσας, ο Αρχιεπισκοπος Ελπιδοφορος ειναι ο μονος αλλος ιεραρχης ο οποιος εισηγαγε πολλαπλα «κουταλια» Κοινωνιας στην Β. Αμερικη, επισης με μεθοδους μυστικοτητος. Κατα το Ελληνικο ειδησιογραφικο αρθρο, ο Αρχιεπισκοπος Ελπιδοφορος καθοδηγησε τους ενοριακους ιερεις της Ν. Υορκης, Κονεκτικατ, και της πολης της Ουασινκτον να προσφερουν την Θεια Κοινωνια χρησιμοποιοντας πολλαπλα μεταλλικα «κουταλια», μιας χρησεως κατα την μεταδοση. Εξεδωσε την σχετικη οδηγια σε μια επιστολη της 18ης Μαιου, οι οποια επεφερε την επιγραφη «μονο για τους ιερεις» και η οποια «υπο ουδεμια συνθηκη πρεπει να αναρτηθει, μοιρασθει, η αναπαραχθει σε ηλεκτρονικη αλληλογραφια η στην κοινονικη διαδυκτιωση».  Το μηνυμα Του φερει περιεργες αποχρωσεις της δικης σας επιστολης προς τους κληρικους τη 5η Ιουνιου.  Επειτα απο την δικη Του εισαγωγη των πολλαπλων «κουταλιων» στις Ηνωμενες Πολιτειες, ακολουθησατε και Εσεις, χρησιμοποιοντας την πανδημια του Covid-19 ως δικαιολογια και την καταγγελια ενος παραπλανημενου ενοριτη στις υγειονομικες αρχες της πολης, το οποιο θεμα διεφυγε απο τα ορια και καταντησε υπερβολικο.

Η επιστολη του Αρχιεπισκοπου Ελπιδοφορου η απο της 18ης Μαιου 2020 κυκλοφορησε ακριβως μια ημερα αφ’οτου λαβατε την επιστολη του Πατριαρχου μας, την απο της 17ης Μαιου, στην οποια απαγορευοταν η αλλαγη στον τροπο μεταδοσης της Θειας Κοινωνιας.  Ομως, η επιστολη του Πατριαρχου δεν δημοσιοποιηθηκε μεχρι της 2ης Ιουνιου 2020.  Οι λογοι για αυτην την καθυστερηση δεν ειναι σαφεις, αλλα η καθυστερηση εδωσε αρκετο χρονο στον Αρχιεπισκοπο Ελπιδοφορο να επιβαλλει τα πολλαπλα «κουταλια», αποφευγοντας ετσι την «φαινομενικη αισθηση» τυχον ανυπακοης προς τον Οικουμενικο μας Πατριαρχη.

Ειναι λυπηρο το οτι ο Πατριαρχης μας δεν τον εκτοπισε για την εμφανη του ανυπακοη, αλλα υπαρχει μια πιθανη εξηγηση για αυτην την φαινομενικη ιδιοσυγκρασια, την οποια θα αναφερουμε κατωθι.  Ειναι αραγε συμπτωση οτι και οι 2 μονοι Αρχιεπισκοποι της Ηπειρου της Β. Αμερικης, εχουν αυθαιρετως, και χωρις καμμια πιεση των πολιτικων αρχων, των ιερεων, η του λαου, επιβαλλει την χρηση πολλαπλων «κουταλιων» Θειας Κοινωνιας εν πληρη γνωση οτι το πραξανε σε αντιθεση του Πατριαρχη τους, και ανευ κυρωσεων απο Εκεινον?

Ισως ο Παναγιωτατος κ. Βαρθολομαιος ειναι ενας πολυ ευγενικος και συγχωρητικος ανθρωπος. Η μηπως εχει και εκεινος καποιο δικο του κρυφο σκοπο? Για αρκετα χρονια, ο Ορθοδοξος κοσμος εχει παρακολουθησει Ορθοδοξους Ηγετες να κανουν προοδευτικα βηματα προς τον οικουμενισμο, ενα αμφιλεγομενο κινημα το οποιο Εκεινοι και οι Παπες της Ρωμης υποστηριζουν. Φλογερος τους ποθος ειναι να ενωθουν με την Ρωμη και τις αλλες ετεροδοξες «εκκλησιες». Αυτο το επιτευγμα θα ηταν κατα πολλα αποδεκτο, αξιοτιμο, και αγιο, αλλα μονο εφ’οσον οι ετεροδοξες «εκκλησιες» και σχισματικοι επεστρεφαν στην αγκαλια της Ορθοδοξιας, ητοι της Μητερας Εκκλησιας.

Δοξα τω Θεω, το οτι εχουμε μαρτυριες τετοιων επιστροφων, αλλα οχι τοσο λογω των προσπαθειων των Ορθοδοξων Ηγετων.  Στις περισσοτερες περιπτωσεις, ειναι το ετεροδοξο ατομο το οποιο ξεκινα μια αναζητηση της Αληθειας, και η οποια τον οδηγει στην Ορθοδοξη Πιστη.  Εκεινο που εχουμε δει απο πολλους Ορθοδοξους Ηγετες ειναι μια συστηματικη φθορα της Ορθοπραξιας και των δογματων, οπως π.χ. με την αναγνωριση του ετεροδοξου βαπτισματος, για να ενθαρυνθει μια μη-κανονικη ενωση με ετεροδοξες «εκκλησιες». Το κορυφαιο βημα, βεβαιως, θα ηταν το αντικανονικο μοιρασμα του Θειου δισκοποτηρου, με καποιον τροπο που δεν θα προυποθετει τον προσηλυτισμο τους (προς την Ορθοδοξια).  Δεν θα ηταν αλλωστε πιο απλο να αλλαξουμε τους κανονες μας περι Κοινωνιας παρα να αλλαξουμε τις καρδιες και το φρονημα ολων των ετεροδοξων?

Αυτο το τελικο βημα θα ολοκληρωνε τον Οικουμενισμο και πλεον το Αγιο Ορθοδοξο Δισκοποτηρο θα προσεφερετο, χωρις δογματικους περιορισμους, σε ολους, Ορθοδοξους και μη-Ορθοδοξους αντιστοιχα.  Επειτα απ’αυτο, ολοι θα ειχαν την ελευθερια να επιλεγουν την εκκλησια τους, το δογμα τους, αλλα επισης και να συμμετεχουν στις αμφοτερες λατρευτικες εκδηλωσεις και στα αμφοτερα μυστηρια τους, χωρις εμποδιο η κωλυμα. Ποιος καλυτερος τροπος τοτε, παρα με την χρησιμοποιηση ενος ιου ως αλλωθι, για να επελθει μια αλλαγη στους κανονες της Θειας Κοινωνιας, με σκοπο την «ασφαλη» μεταδοση Της στον λαο, ο οποιος «δεν» χρειαζεται στην αληθεια προστασια απο το Αχραντο Σωμα και Αιμα του Χριστου.

Εαν η εφαρμογη των πολλαπλων «κουταλιων» Κοινωνιας ριζωσει με επιτυχια στην Δυση – στην Ν. Υορκη και στο Ονταριο – θα ειναι θεμα χρονου μεχρι τα αγριοχορτα να απλωθουν στην υπολοιπη Ηπειρο και στην αλλη οχθη του Ατλαντικου.  Οσο πιο πολυ ο λαος συνηθισει στα πολλαπλα «κουταλια», θα ειναι ολο και πιο ευκολο να κερδιθουν πιο πολλοι επιφυλακτικοι προσηλυτοι, και τοσο  πιο δυσκολο για τους Ορθοδοξους να επιστρεψουν στην Αγια Παραδοση του «κοινου» σκευους. Ισως καποιοι ιεραρχες ελπιζουν οτι ο λογος για την συνεχεια της παραμονης στα πολλαπλα «κουταλια» της Κοινωνιας σταδιακα θα μεταμορφωθει σε ενα πιο μοντερνο «πιστευω» οτι η Θεια Ευχαριστια, τυχον, εχει την δυνατοτητα μεταδοσης ασθενειων.  Η διαχρονικη πειρα και γνωση οτι μεταδοτικες ασθενειες δεν εχουν μεταδοθει ποτε δια του κοινου ποτηριου η δια της κοινης λαβιδας θα ξεχαστει εν καιρω.  Αντιθετα, πιο καινες επιστημονικες αρχες θα επικρατησουν, και το αποτελεσμα θα ειναι μια τελικη αλλαγη στο Δογμα. Ισως η ευκαιρια του Covid-19 καθιστα πολυ δυσκολη την αντισταση για ενα τοσο διαβολικο πειραμα στην Βορειοαμερικανικη Ηπειρο.

Ουτως η αλλως, ετσι ακριβως διεφθειραν οι Παπες την εκκλησια της Δυσης. Με την σκοπιμη παρερμηνευση των Αγιων Γραφων, με την χαλκευση εγγραφων προς αλλοιωση του δογματος, με τον εκφοβισμο των συνετων κληρικων προς σιωπην, και με το να χρησιμοποιουν μυστικοτητα, εξαναγκασμο, ακομα και ιερες εξετασεις. Το τραγικο τελος αυτης της διαφθορας ειναι πολυ γνωστο, οπως οδηγησε στην Προτεσταντικη μεταρρυθμιση και κορυφωθηκε με της εκκλησιαστικες μετατροπες του 2ου Συμβουλιου του Βατικανου το 1962.

Αλλα ποια ειναι η θεσις του Πατριαρχειου? Επειτα απο δυο κατηγορηματικες επιστολες υποδεικνυοντας οτι ο τροπος της μεταδοσεως της Θειας Κοινωνιας δεν πρεπει να αλλαξει, η τριτη εκανε μια εξαιρεση χαριν οικονομιας, υπο σπανιων συνθηκων. Το προβλημα ομως ειναι οτι ο Πατριαρχης μας δεν εχει εφαρμοσει αυτα που εχει γραψει, ουτε με τον Αρχιεπισκοπο Ελπιδοφορο, ουτε με Εσας Σεβασμιωτατε, επειδη ειναι φανερο οτι και οι δυο σας εξακολουθειτε να διατηρειτε τις εδρες σας.  Αντιθετως, ο Πατριαρχης μας, ελαχιστως αντιφωνησε στην ανυπακοη την οποια και οι δυο σας δειξατε.  Ισως να αναρωτηθει κανεις εαν αυτο οφειλεται με καποιο τροπο στην στενη του σχεση με τον Παπα Ρωμης.

Αρχιζει ισως να διερωταται κανεις εαν ο Πατριαρχης μας ο ιδιος θελει να εισαγει τις «πολλαπλες λαβιδες της Κοινωνιας», αλλα ορθως αναγνωριζοντας οτι ειναι διακινδυνευομενο να το πραξει στην Ελλαδα, οπου υπαρχει ενας πολυ μεγαλυτερος και συγκεντρωμενος Ορθοδοξος πληθυσμος, ο οποιος θα επαναστατουσε εαν τολμουσε να εισαγει αυτην την ιδεα εκει.  Η τυχον αποπειρα θα διακινδυνευοταν γρηγορης αποτυχιας. Στην Β. Αμερικη αντιθετως, το κλιμα ειναι, και αοριστα αλλα και με ακριβεια, πολυ διαφορετικο.  Ο Ορθοδοξος λαος μας ειναι κατα πολυ μικροτερος απο τον πληθυσμο των αλλων πιστεων και δογματων, και οι περισσοτεροι Ορθοδοξοι εδω ειναι μεταναστες η απογονοι μεταναστων.  Με αλλα λογια, ειτε ειναι αρκετα χαμηλοτερης παιδειας, ειτε αρκετα εμπαιδομενοι στην Βορειο-αμερικανικη κουλτουρα ωστε να αποτελουν μικροτερη απειλη για την επιτυχια ενος τετοιου υποθετικου μεν, διαβολικου δε σχεδιου – το σχεδιο του να χρησιμοποιηθει η Βορειος Αμερικη ως πειραματικο κεντρο για την εισαγωγη της κοινης λαβιδος, και μετεπειτα, κοινου ποτηριου.  Εαν γινει αποδεκτο, τετοιου ειδους οικουμενισμου θα καταστρεψει την Αγια Ορθοδοξια, αλλα θα παραχωρισει πολυ μεγαλυτερυ δυναμη στους «νεους ιεραρχες» μιας αντικανονικης, ενωμενης παγκοσμιας εκκλησιας, με ολα τα κοσμικα της προνομια.

Σε αυτη τη φαση, ισως για μια ακομη φορα μας χαρακτηρησετε ως «αυτοκαταστρεπτικους εξτρεμιστες οι οποιοι ειναι πανετοιμοι να επιφερουν ζημιες». Η αληθεια ειναι οτι και να υπαρχουν τετοιοι ανθρωποι, σιγουρα δεν ειμαστε εμεις.  Οπως και ο ιος του Covid-19 εχει ξεσκεπασει τις καρδιες και τον νου πολλων ανθρωπων, ετσι και ο χρονος θα ξεσκεπασει ποιοι ειναι οι πραγματικοι καταστροφεις-εξτρεμιστες.  Ελπιζουμε και προσευχομαστε, οτι αυτο το πραγμα δεν θα ειστε Εσεις, Σεβασμιωτατε.

Επισης ελπιζουμε οτι ειμαστε κατα πολυ λανθασμενοι περι του Παναγιωτατου Πατριαρχου κ. Βαρθολομαιου. Εαν κανουμε λαθος, παρακαλουμε να γνωριζετε οτι Εσεις και ο Αρχιεπισκοπος Ελπιδοφορος, δια των κρυπτων μεθοδων και παρανομων πραξεων Σας, εχετε δωσει αφορμη για την αναπτυξη των θλιβερων φοβιων και ισχυρισμων που εχουμε διατυπωσει εντος αυτης της επιστολης.  Οι δυο σας απλωσατε την σκια της δυσπιστιας και δυσφημησης που εχει πεσει επι του Αγιου μας Πατριαρχου, με το να λογχευτουν οι καρδιες και οι ψυχες των Ορθοδοξων πιστων με την αυθαιρετη Σας αιρεση των πολλαπλων «κουταλιων».

Η ταχεια απομακρυνση σας απο το Αρχιεπισκοπικο αξιωμα θα ηταν η μονη ικανοποιητικη αποδειξη οτι ο Παναγιωτατος κ. Βαρθολομαιος ειναι αθωος τετοιων κατηγοριων και οτι παραμενει ενας ορθος και αληθινος Ορθοδοξος ηγετης.

Imposter Bishops (continued)

God waits for the sinner to repent, but there is a limit to how long He will wait. When He gave Life and Freedom to all His logical creatures – the angelic powers and mankind – He also assigned accountability. While Lucifer and his bodiless followers were plotting their rebellion against God (which the All-knowing was always aware of) they were still members of the Church in Heaven – until they consummated their sin and were thrown out. That was the first mutinous persecution of the Church by Satan, and one third of the angelic powers who fell with him.

Satan’s rage against God and all of Creation – but especially His Church – has never diminished since. After Adam and Eve also sinned (and were thrown out of Eden), there has been war between Satan and God, with humanity as the battleground. Which of them wins over us depends on how we use our freedom. There have always been people in both camps, persecutions both without and within the Church. From Judas’ kiss to Diocletian’s bloody executions, followed by the Arians, the Nestorians, the Iconoclasts, the Crusaders, the Western schismatics, the Ottomans, and finally the Ecumenists of today – all these and many, many other assailants throughout Church history, have incessantly rocked the Ark of Salvation. And yet, despite the volleys of betrayals, massacres, heresies and prodigal bishops, the Church has and will stay the course with Christ at the helm.

We know this because Christ promised, “on this rock [of faith] I will build My Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).  This never meant that the Church on Earth would find things easy. It meant that Christ’s Church, those in and of her, would never be overcome by the evil one. It is this rock-like faith that led millions to martyrdom. Just like Jesus, they won the war by dying. Their physical deaths did not end their membership in the Church, but further sealed it with their confession of faith. Despite the death toll of the early martyrs, the Church not only survived, but increased. These Christian martyrs understood Christ when He told Pilate, “My Kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). They knew that although they were in the world, they were not of the world either. They were sojourners on earth who strove for a permanent membership in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Judas - The Original Orthodox KarenTherefore, if some of us lament the abysmal quality of some hierarchs in the Orthodox Church today, listen to what Christ said to His Disciples: “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil?” (John 6:70).  Being the all-knowing God, and not interfering with the free will of His creatures, but giving them every opportunity to know Him and follow Him, Jesus knew in advance that Judas Iscariot, despite following Him closely for three years, would betray Him. He knew he would do it with a kiss and would not seek forgiveness, but would destroy himself. Christ gave Judas every opportunity to repent, but when Judas would not return to the Master, the Master used the devil to abolish the devil’s power over us by allowing his freely made choices to play out. Although one of the “twelve,” Judas did not cultivate the rock-like faith required for the gates of hell not to prevail against him. He succumbed to his final temptation, becoming “the son of perdition” (John 17:12). He was in the Church, but he was not of the church – a condition of the heart and mind that can apply to anyone, including bishops.

As She did from the very beginning, the Church continues Her struggle against both external and internal enemies. It is the “kissing” internal ones that pose the greatest threat to the flock, the ones that lie to the Holy Spirit when they say, “nor will I give You a kiss as did Judas.” The New Testament refers to such as these as Judaizers (refuted by St. Paul), the sexually immoral Nicolaitans (in Revelations), false teachers, false prophets and wolves masquerading in sheep’s clothing. While Papal heresies led to the Protestant Reformation in the West, the East struggled under the Ottoman yoke, keeping Orthodoxy alive by the light of the moon. During her occupation, many more new martyrs of the suffering Church on Earth were added to the Church in the Heavenly Kingdom.

About a century after the Eastern Church was liberated, Her hierarchs began yielding to the seductions of the West. Operating like papal “primates”, with their arbitrary innovations to the Faith, the more recent patriarchs of Constantinople, beginning with Joachim III and Meletios IV (Metaxakis) all the way to present-day Bartholomew, have been yearning after the new pan-heresy of unorthodox Ecumenism. This heresy aims to lead all faiths to one global religion, one all-accepting watered-down creed that accepts everyone’s god. This type of ecumenism, which can only be accomplished by destroying the Orthodox Church, has been the long-term plan of Freemasonry.

Freemasonry is a secret, neo-gnostic, occult religion, with its own theology, rituals and symbolism (icons). The higher levels have attracted many wealthy intellectuals who hold key positions in society and politics, including many religious and political leaders. Freemasonry rejects the Holy Trinity and anything having to do with faith, accepting only knowledge (gnosis) in the form of science or rationalism. They look upon faithful Christians with disdain, as those being “in the dark.” Ironically, the higher levels of Freemasonry still practice a form of faith in that they worship Lucifer as the “good god”, who enlightens and illumines his followers and strives to overcome the “bad” God, the Creator of matter. This is hypocritical because science and rationalism have everything to do with matter. Freemasonry is a form of idolatry, where the false god being worshiped is Satan, for God said, “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3; Deuteronomy 5:7).6 Of course, people are free to worship any god they choose, and follow any lifestyle they wish, but anyone who claims to be Christian knows that they “cannot serve two masters” (Luke 16:13). If this is true for all Orthodox Christians, how much truer is it for Orthodox clergy? 

 The Greek Orthodox Church (in Greece, not Constantinople) officially condemned Freemasonry first in 1933, and again in 2014. Scholar and Monk Seraphim (Zissis) details how multiple Greek Patriarchs of Constantinople, like Joachim III and Meletios IV (Metaxakis), other Greek bishops, and Greek theologians were secret Freemasons who endorsed the early ecumenical movement and helped create the World Council of Churches (WCC) to promote it. Patriarch Joachim III was the first to name the Roman Catholics and Protestants “Churches” from an Orthodox perspective. Patriarch Meletios IV (Metaxakis) adopted the new calendar to align with the other “churches”, and was very interested in the Anglican church when most of their clergy were Masons. Political Freemasonry played a key role in the February 1917 Revolution in Russia, which established Communism, an ideology that heavily persecuted the Russian Orthodox Church.

In abuse of their honorary “ecumenical” titles, the Freemason patriarchs of Constantinople began exercising a papal type of authority, creating divides in the Orthodox Church. They did this by arbitrarily consecrating new bishops as autocephalous leaders in other countries and jurisdictions. Patriarch Bartholomew’s interference in Ukraine in 2019 was not the first example, nor will it be the last.  In addition, Bartholomew threatened to break communion with the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church in Greece if She did not transfer to his control 36 of her dioceses.  The Church of Greece capitulated to prevent schism. Using similar means, he also absorbed many churches of the diaspora that were under the control of other patriarchates, who also conceded to prevent schism.  This year, he has gone so far as to announce his intention to consecrate the dregs of rogue clergy, like Alexander Belya (planned to be the new bishop of Nicopolis) previously defrocked by ROCOR, and the divisive Theophan Koja, of whom the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania had grave concerns. Theophan Koja (now the new bishop of Philomelion) was no sooner consecrated when he recited the Creed with the Latin filioque at his consecration! Despite severe criticism, these two are being used by Bartholomew to create Slavic and Albanian “Vicariates” (under the American Archdiocese of Elpidophoros) based on the ethno phyletism of the laity, so as to absorb this flock and their temples into Bartholomew’s see.

What is this all about? It is about achieving the end goal of unorthodox Ecumenism, the child of the Constantinopolitan Freemason hierarchy, which they have been planning for over the past 100 years.  April 20th, 2025 is the much-anticipated calendar date when the Roman Catholic Easter and the Orthodox Pascha will coincide. It will mark the 1700th year anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council, and as Bartholomew and his bishops have already announced, their planned union of the Roman Catholic Church of the West to the Eastern Orthodox Church of the East, thereby symbolically annulling all previous Ecumenical Council decisions. This explains Patriarch Bartholomew’s global meddling in other Orthodox jurisdictions, his high-handed take-over of diaspora Churches, and his seemingly endless crowning of riffraff “Charlemagnes.”4 He rushes to non canonically expand as much as he can, the size of the Eastern Orthodox Church, while setting Her up for a devastating downfall in a false union with Rome. The mutinous patriarch of “shock and awe” hurries to bring as many followers as possible into perdition with him, as his father, Lucifer, did before him. On the North American continent, this would include all Greek Orthodox Churches of the American Archdiocese under colorful Elpidophoros, and all those of the Greek Canadian Archdiocese, controlled by sinister Sotirios. It would take too long to list the churches in Australia and other parts of the world that are in Bartholomew’s see.

If consummated, the result of this false union will be a schism similar in tragedy and trajectory to that of 1054, but the Freemasons don’t care because their goal is to destroy the Orthodox Church anyway. Patriarch Bartholomew told us so himself, when he was asked in 2021 how he felt when the Moscow Patriarchate severed full communion with the Phanar, because of his meddling in Moscow’s jurisdiction by granting autocephaly (independence) to the newly created Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). This new “autocephaly” was an affront to the already established Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which was self-governing under the see of Moscow. The schism was hoped to be a temporary disciplinary measure to make Bartholomew recant and restore unity, but his response was –  σκασίλα μου – he just didn’t care.

The Holy Fathers, on the other hand, cared a great deal about schisms. St. Irenaeus of Lyons, sums it up perfectly with these words: “He [God] shall also judge those who give rise to schisms, who are destitute of the love of God, and who look to their own special advantage rather than to the unity of the Church; and who for…any kind of reason which occurs to them, cut in pieces and divide the great and glorious body of Christ, and so far as in them lies, destroy it – men who prate of peace while they give rise to war.” Hieromartyr Ignatius the God-bearer could not make it more clear in his Epistle to the Philadelphians: “Do not err, my brethren. If any man follows him that makes a schism in the Church, he shall not inherit the Kingdom of God.” It is vital to note here that it is he who makes the schism that is the schismatic, which is why the faithful must not leave their schismatic church until after the schism is made, to remain blameless of this enormous sin.

 Bartholomew and his predecessors justify their uncanonical activities by abusing their honorary title of “ecumenical” (which means universal) Patriarch, also expressed as “first among equals” (first in honor). Not long ago, Bartholomew went further by (uncanonically, of course) adopting the title “first without equal,” unprecedented in the Orthodox Church, but well known to the popes of Rome who invented it. This new title was defended in a 2014 essay by the incumbent American “orthodox” Archbishop Elpidophoros, who, in 2019, was rewarded with a hierarchy of his very own by his mentor … Bartholomew. Many of the papal heresies and fabrications that led to the Great Schism of 1054 are strikingly similar to those of the Constantinopolitan patriarchs during the past 100 years.4 Bishops like these fully disregard that the Apostles never selected amongst themselves a “first among equals” let alone a “first without equal.”

Instead of working on the more important and pressing issues that concern the Church today, such as pandemic issues, abortion issues, contemporary morality issues or properly framed reunification issues, all of which should have “a return to Orthodoxy” as their basic tenet (this is proper Orthodox ecumenism); and instead of strengthening the bonds between existing Orthodox jurisdictions and resolving political and cultural differences that have divided some Orthodox Churches, the “first without equal” (in all manner of “shock and awe”) does the opposite. By “lording it over” all other patriarchates, he creates and widens inter-Orthodox rifts while focusing on “union” with the non-Orthodox, without any indication of their conversion to the Orthodox Faith from which they have tragically departed.  Ecumenical dialogue has focused predominantly on “similarities,” opportunities for ‘economia’ (which should only be used for rare exceptions), and a “downplaying” and even avoidance of dogmatic differences. As they did in Kolymbari, Bartholomew and his bishops keep drifting into the most emetic of “lukewarm” arenas of the dilution of our Faith, which makes our Lord Jesus Christ so upset, He says, “I will vomit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16). Should this false union ever be consummated, he and his bishops will be thrown out of the Church by God Himself, like their father, Lucifer. Woe to the blind, complacent and lukewarm sheep who follow them into the abyss of an easy, convenient and false “Christianity.” The true Church will not follow these deceivers! She knows the voice of the Good Shepherd and will follow Him, staying the course.

 In the Name of “Love”

The Orthodox Church is essential, not only as the Ark of Salvation, but also as the spiritual hospital for the healing of the soul.1 Spiritual growth and healing, however, can only be accomplished through the in-person (never virtual) sacraments of Holy Baptism, Repentance (Holy Confession) and Holy Communion. In the name of “love,” too many misguided “orthodox” bishops have disregarded these soul-saving tools, to enforce unprecedented political temple lockdowns and vaccine mandates – because these, and not Christ, will save us. In the name of “love,” they have embraced  sexual immorality, and the non-Orthodox without calling anyone to repentance. They have even served Holy Communion with multiple spoons – because the “Giver of Life” spreads disease and death –  and marched and celebrated under a rainbow flag, as did Archbishop Elpidophoros, twice, at Anglican St. Bart’s Cathedral, all in the name of “love,” for as they say, “God is Love”. Yes, that He is, but love without truth is a lie. God is Love and Truth. God is true Love, not an exhibition of “love” where “everything goes.” Love without Truth is not the Love of God, and lust is not love. God said, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second [commandment] is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’(Mark 12:28-34). In true Love, obedience to God and His commandments always comes first because He is Love and He is Truth. Christ also commanded us: Love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:9-17), which Christ did for us. True love is sacrificial. There is nothing lustful or selfish about it; and there is nothing sacrificial in lust.

In the name of “love,” these same bishops have denied the Power of God in the Holy Chalice; they have denied the flock access to the Holy Gifts; and they continue to deny to the non-Orthodox knowledge of the Truth, lest these convert and judge them. When did any of these “lovers” of ours risk their lives to commune the faithful during the lockdowns? When did any of them even conduct a litany for God to lift the pandemic? Are these “lovers” of sexual immorality and all its ideologies, now ready to lay down their lives for their LGBTQ+ “friends?” or is it because they secretly practice sexual immoralities together with them that they publicly support their sin? They haven’t left much to the imagination when a number of “orthodox” hierarchs are already known to have open and unrepented homosexual lifestyles. And even if they don’t, do they really think that they love the stray sheep more than God loves them?

In their arrogance, they forget that the fallen human condition (which includes theirs) cannot even begin to fathom the mystical depths of God’s Power, Mercy and Love. Theirs is more a love of the self and the body, manifested as lust, greed, and hypocrisy. In their self-serving delusions, they have lost the meaning of Love because the Holy Spirit has departed from them, and the “other” spirit has made its abode in them. Saint Peter warns about false teachers, like these bishops, who are unholy and communicate heresy. They are arrogant, sensual and greedy deceivers, denying accountability in their lives. Isolating themselves from Apostolic doctrine concerning Christ, they hold their own “private interpretations,” misconstruing doctrines and Holy Scripture (2 Peter 2:1-3). These are not the words of the author. These are the words of the Orthodox Study Bible.5

 Homosexuality among the Eastern Orthodox hierarchy under the Constantinopolitan patriarchate, is more prevalent than meets the eye. It is rumored that “to become a bishop in the Eastern Orthodox Church, one must be an ecumenist, a Freemason and a homosexual.”  You must belong to the “other” club before you can belong to Bartholomew’s. This explains the ‘rogue clergy’ consecrations that we see taking place in rapid succession, the cowardice of established hierarchs who did nothing to spiritually support their flock during Covid, and the countless hushed up reports of open episcopal homosexuality, witnessed by scandalized laity, which this author is also privy to. Bishops such as these are not worthy of their ordination according to the impediments set out by the Holy Canons of the Church and they must be deposed.6  St. Paul said, “…an overseer [bishop] must be above reproach…” (1 Timothy 3:1-2), but if you are an imposter patriarch (bishop), you need other imposters worse than yourself, to support your agenda and not hold you accountable! The fish rots from the head!

St. John the Theologian records Christ’s message to the bishop of the Church of Ephesus: …”but you have this in your favor, you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate” (Revelations 2:6). In his book of homilies, Archimandrite Athanasios Mitilinaios explains below:

“The Nicolaitans were gnosticizing heretics … Gnosticism did not die and will not die until the end of history …The Nicolaitans … had a very lax attitude towards idolatry and carnal sins…they had great difficulty accepting the commandments of God …  more specifically, in the area of bodily sins. They were tremendously loose … specifically regarding the subject of abstinence or sexual control …

 

Gnosticism attempts to create a melting pot of all the ideologies of all times. It is a mixture: a little philosophy, a little Christianity, a little Buddhism, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, a little idolatry. It is a smorgasbord of all religions [like unorthodox Ecumenism] that maintains the name of Christianity; but it is a Christianity of maximum distortion. They were classified as heretics because they attempted to give themselves a Christian garb, a Christian color, while their abuse and distortion of the Gospel was horrendous …

 

Freemasonry is a revival of Gnosticism …neo-Gnosticism … They claim to have the light, the illumination, and the pathway to the depth of knowledge, the depth of wisdom, the depth of philosophy … [which are] the depths of Satan … [Their] hope [is] to destroy all religions and especially Orthodox Christianity.”7  

 “There is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). The Holy Apostles were painfully aware of spiritual dangers like Gnosticism, the oldest and most pervasive heresy in Christian history. Saint Peter warns, “be sober-minded, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:9). Saint Paul admonishes, “In their case the god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Saint John also writes, “We know we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).

The Holy Apostles admonished and exhorted their flock to guard against the dangers of the secular world. Which Eastern Orthodox pulpit or encyclical today, warns the Church about the dangers that are being propagated by politicians around the world as “freedom and rights for all”?  Which hierarch has urged their flock to “stand firm and hold to the traditions that [the Apostles] taught” (2 Thessalonians 2:15) because 2000 years of Orthodox Christian Tradition comes in direct conflict with “modern society’s teachings” in our schools, governments, and institutions around the industrialized world today? What bishop has taught our children that the Garden of Eden was lost because not everything is a “FREE FOR ALL,” but that God had placed a single restriction on mankind – to love and obey Him.

Certainly not those hierarchs who already serve two masters, hating The One and loving the “other.” Freemason “Grand Commanders” like Canadian Archbishop Sotirios, have never stood up to the slings and arrows that buffet the Church; they only capitulate to them, as they capitulated to Covidism, to unorthodox ecumenism, and to a false union with Rome in 2025, to strip Holy Orthodoxy down to Her “commonalities” with all other religions. Their goal, as we said, is to align all citizens of the world with one “common global religion,” the “other” master being “common” to all. The false union with Rome will not stop there; there will be many other false unions.

How do “orthodox” hierarchs fall for such deceit? Actually, they don’t. They are fully on board with the neo-Gnostic “system” that selected them and elected them, purposely “groomed” them in the cult of Freemasonry and “approved” them to fill the role in the way that enables their agenda.  This is why in the last hundred years or so, the new hierarchy stopped consecrating hieromonks as bishops to succeed them, and craftily figured out how to remove the laity from the electoral process to select new hierarchs. With all arrogance, these present-day, neo-Gnostic Nicolaitans hijacked the Orthodox Church, and through the preferential ordinations of like-minded, lascivious jackals, they have multiplied their numbers to circumvent accountability, and to destroy the Church from within. Such as these shall be the new leaders of the harlot church. “…and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns…decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH” (Revelations 17:3).

These harlot hierarchs will not heed the voice of the Good Shepherd because they neither love Him nor believe in Him. Willful, shameless and unrepentant sodomites and piranhas, “in the name of Jesus,” they extract and extort millions of dollars from the temples of a pious flock that naively funds them for the false unification of all religions and the destruction of Truth. What more evidence do we need? “[We]…know them by their [rotten] fruits” (Matthew 7:16)!

The Time is Near

When Jesus warned, “Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15), He was not exaggerating. These self-serving hierarchs are the neo-Gnostic wolves in sheep’s clothing against whom Saint Paul warned, “O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” for by professing it some have swerved from the faith…” (1 Timothy 6:20-21); and “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8). Saint John also warned, “Whoever says “I know Him” but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” (1 John 2:4) See how carefully the Holy Apostles trained and prepared those like Timothy, who they ordained as bishops to continue the Apostolic mission in service to the Church!

The faithful “Timothies”, in the Eastern Orthodox Church today, are tragically outnumbered by the “devils” and “liars” who have taken over behind an “orthodox” facade. Blinded by their lust for their true master, Satan, they despise the true Love of God. These duplicitous, high-ranking Freemasons repeatedly injure the Body of Christ, His Church, with their demonic innovations, arrogant power-grabs and hypocritical justifications to the sheep, who they also despise, claiming they are “orthodox” bishops who must be obeyed because they have the Apostolic succession through ordination, an ordination they desecrate, mock and usurp. They forget, or rather, they do not believe or care, that when the Pharisees puffed themselves up because they were descendants of Abraham, Christ responded, “…do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father. ‘ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones” (Matthew 3: 9-10).

If they do not repent, they will “bring on themselves swift destruction” (2 Peter 2:1), as did all their wicked predecessors before them (2 Peter 2:4-22). The same holds true for the complacent, comfortable, lukewarm sheep that enable them. Over and over, God’s providence uses His enemies, just as He used “the son of perdition” to accomplish His purpose. Even if things seem they can get no worse, as they did from the foot of the Cross, that is when Christ will renew and purify His suffering Church, leading Her to glory, for He has built her on the rock of Faith and “…the gates of hell shall not prevail against Her” (Matthew 16:18).

It is very tempting to be scandalized by all that has been taking place in the Orthodox Church these days, but Christ said, “such things must come” (Matthew 6:8). Why? Because, even now, God is using the evil ones who are in but not of His Church to separate the sheep from the goats. According to His Divine Justice, everyone will use their free will to sort themselves out, like wheat from chaff, depending on who they follow. Will they follow the steep and narrow path of the Good Shepard, or will they follow the wide and easy path of Satan’s harlot church? See how the enemies of God cannot and will not destroy His Body, His Church! All they can do is leave and by doing so, they will create the schism. Therefore, they will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Those that do not know the voice of the Good Shepherd, those who are not of His flock, will all fall away. “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us” (1 John 2:19)

But as for us, “if we endure, we will also reign with Him” (2 Timothy 2:11-13). So, let us prepare ourselves. Let us find a trusted Orthodox spiritual father, even if he belongs to another jurisdiction, and seek advice from him; let us withhold our financial support from corrupt hierarchy who use our donations to promote their blasphemous agenda; let us worship in the temples of other Orthodox jurisdictions, but if that is not possible, remember that (until the false union takes place) God’s grace is still imparted to the faithful even if unworthy bishops are in charge. Do not abstain from the Divine Liturgy or from the Holy Gifts because of scandal; and do not be afraid of becoming spiritually orphaned. God will provide for his sheep. Above all, do not leave the Orthodox Church, for She is the Ark of Salvation, no matter how many “Judases” lurk inside. They will not be there for much longer and some of them may even repent.

When the traitors leave, the authentic Orthodox Church may become smaller, but having been cleansed, She will shine much brighter, and more faithful sheep will find Her and flock to Her; for She will reject all idolatry and immorality, all lies and falsehoods, all heresies and blasphemies. She will hold a proper and true Great and Holy Ecumenical Synod and will put everything in order, properly missionizing “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). The sham church with her harlot bishops, will follow the globalists and ultimately the Antichrist.8 While the devil does his work, Christ is already revealing true and worthy priests and bishops that will properly guide the faithful; bishops who recognize and follow the voice of the Good Shepherd, up the narrow path, leading His Church to the top of the mountain. There, the full number of saints (of whom God has foreknowledge) will be completed; and then, the history of the world will be ended by God, who will abolish all evil forever.

The time is near. Let us all correct ourselves. Let us “exhort one another daily…lest any of [us] be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13). Let us be vigilant, “wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). While the enemies of God war against Him as they did from the beginning of time, let us steadfastly pray and study God’s word, choosing wisely, exercising repentance with patient endurance in these spiritually hard times (Hebrews 6:15). The Lord will win for us, provided we persevere like “a woman in travail” (John 16:21-23; Revelations 12:1-6), up the steep and narrow path, the only Path, in and of the only Church, the only Ark that leads to the Heavenly Kingdom. Let us be able to say “yes” to the Lord’s question, “…when the Son of Man comes, shall He find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8).

Letter to Archbishop Sotirios

The letter below was sent to Archbishop Sotirios in Canada by a faithful member of the Greek Orthodox community. The author sent us a copy and asked if we could post it. To his Eminence Archbishop Sotirios;

I’m writing this letter to ask you – why are you forcing all the priests and lay people alike to commune with the multiple spoons? Where have you gotten the idea that this is ok and acceptable?

This is a sin and blasphemous! You are stating that Christ our God can transmit disease with the ONE holy common spoon. (And please don’t say that we worship the spoon, because we don’t. It’s the method that is being used to commune that you are doubting,) Really? That is ridiculous to say the least and if some are truly afraid, then they should not commune. In all this time during this pandemic, you have done nothing for the faithful people of God, to help or comfort them in any way. But instead you introduced the multiple spoons at the very same time corona came.

We the faithful will NEVER accept this nor any other changes you might introduce to our faith and Holy Tradition. As a matter of fact, we are all fed up with all of this and we will not stand by to watch our faith diminish. We will preserve the faith and practice it correctly to the fullest!

If you do not believe in the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church as has been handed down to us by the holy apostles, then please leave the rest of us who do ALONE to believe correctly and practice it as proper, true Orthodox Christians should. And please stop abusing and bothering our monasteries to commune with multiple spoons! Leave them alone! We will not obey anything or anyone who breaks God’s laws or goes above them. May God enlighten and forgive you. We hope and pray that you repent of this horrible sin.

Orthodoxy Needs Communication and Repentance

Fr. Demetrios has decades of experience as a priest. During his career, he has served under several bishops in more than one jurisdiction. He had reached out to us for technical assistance with a project he was working on. While we had him on the phone, we couldn’t help but ask him about the state of our Orthodox Church in the United States.

His response caught us by surprise. Fr. Demetrios said, “All we need in Orthodoxy is communication and repentance. That would fix everything.”

During the rest of the conversation, he explained what he meant. In his experience, most bishops were at least difficult, if not impossible, to communicate with. Often they have, at most, a small group of trusted advisors to whom they listen. Sometimes they only listen to a chancellor playing the role of “gatekeeper.” When mistakes are made, they are rarely acknowledged and repented of. Usually the goal is to just quietly “move on.”

As we talked, the truth of what Fr. Demetrios was saying became more and more apparent. Many of the problems we see around us are directly attributable to lack of communication and repentance.

Bishops are Largely Incommunicado

Patrick ReardonFr. Demetrios explained to us that, in his experience, bishops are rarely interested in the opinions of their priests or the laity. We have seen multiple public confirmations of this. For example, most bishops did not ask for any input on how to deal with Covid at the parish-level. Fr. Patrick Henry Reardon was thrilled that Bishop Anthony, via an administrative assistant, contacted him for his ideas 10 months into the pandemic:

As far as I know, this is also the first time, during these ten miserable months, an Orthodox bishop has asked for “creative ideas addressing this issue” from the local pastors of our congregations.

His advice was not heeded, but at least he was able to tender it. Via email. To an assistant. Did Bishop Anthony even read it? Or even a summary of it? Who knows?

A group of OCA priests wrote this in an article The Broken Covenant about the church lockdowns:

Without the sacramental rudders and moorings of the Church, the OCA bishops were cast adrift, as they tried to navigate the political landscape.  They seemingly closed their minds to reason, as they closed the doors of the Church and they wanted no input from the priests fearing it would undercut their point of view. 

The bishops didn’t want any input from the men directly serving in the parishes among the people. Or the people themselves. These bishops would rather be wrong in their suppositions, than to hear the truth from the local parishes. They were very out-of-step with many sheep in their flocks over the Church’s Covid response, and most still seem totally oblivious to that fact. You cannot govern in truth, if you refuse to hear it.

In addition to ignoring emails, phone calls, letters, and petitions, more than one Orthodox hierarch is known for blocking / unfriending anyone on social media who asks an unwelcome question or “steps out of line” in even the slightest way. On Twitter, whoever runs Archbishop Elpidophoros’ account is notorious for quickly blocking users, even priests, over seemingly trivial comments / questions. His Eminence even blocks accounts that have never contacted him on the basis of those accounts having interacted with blocked accounts.

Those wanting to have their concerns heard end up writing blogs, posting on their own social media, and signing petitions – all in the hopes of getting some episcopal attention. Orthodox Reflections came into existence for this very reason. As all private avenues of communication are cut off, there is not much choice besides going public.  The lack of meaningful engagement and cooperation hurts and divides the Church. It also makes the men charged with making decisions and representing the Church look and sound completely tone-deaf.

Tone-deafness

In the secular world, before we issue a statement to clients or put out a press release, the text goes through multiple layers of vetting by different departments. Everyone brings their own expertise to bear. Much of our review effort is geared towards identifying ways any statement can be misconstrued. Anything you say or publish can instantly turn into a public relations nightmare. We could paraphrase Murphy’s Law a bit to say: Anything that can be misconstrued, will be. A good rule – don’t say and do things which can reasonably be misunderstood (or understood if that really is your point) as being contrary to your values and/or your previous commitments. Doing so provides ammunition to your enemies and demoralizes your supporters. In the Orthodox context, souls are literally on the line, so you had better be careful with what you say and do.

On a regular basis, bishops ignite firestorms. Sometimes it seems to be accidental. At other times, it is clear that they took controversial positions and steps on purpose, but it is hard to believe they were in any way prepared for the severity of the backlash that followed. If they listened to anyone at all in the preparation of their controversial texts or planning some of their controversial actions, then it was to individuals who agreed with them completely and looked at everything from the same perspective as the hierarchs. An echo chamber does not prepare you for contact with the real world.

The latest example was Archbishop Elpidophoros seemingly endorsing “many paths to God” and rejecting Christ as the only way to salvation: “When you elevate one religion above all others, it is as if you decide there is only one path leading to the top of the mountain.” We covered the speech here and here. 

Of course, the unfortunate “new age” wording has already spawned many negative responses. Among them are humorous memes such as the one to the right.

In the best case, this speech was a blunder based on being completely tone-deaf to easily anticipated public reaction:

In my opinion, Archbishop Elpidophoros could have done a better job of bracketing his comment about having only one path leading to the top of the mountain, i.e., that he was talking about state-religion relations, not about theology in the usual sense. Loosely read, Elpidophoros’ mountain metaphor can be construed as an allusion to a universalist soteriology—an affront to Orthodoxy.

The Greek Archdiocese, so far, has not even attempted to explain the comments. At best, a major blunder. At worst, a case of using plausible deniability to advance heresy publicly. Either way, in a healthy organization with proper checks and balances, this speech would never have been given.

One has to pity priests and deacons in the Greek Archdiocese. Their own hierarchy makes their difficult jobs even harder, and then won’t even listen to their cries of pain.

More examples of tone-deafness abound. We’ll cover just a few:

  • Bishop Benjamin of the OCA sent a letter to his priests mandating that anyone not wearing a mask could not receive communion, and warning his priests, “If I learn you are not strictly observing these directives and one of your parishioners dies of COVID 19, I will not hesitate to suspend you.” This letter was received so badly in his parishes, that six months later members of the Diocese of the West are still complaining about it. Some referenced that letter as the last straw in their leaving the OCA.
  • Archbishop Paul (Gassios) of the Diocese of the Midwest suspended Fr. Mark Hodges after he legally participated in a Constitutionally protected rally, and suggested in a letter to the priest that he was “guilty by association” for having been in the presence of illegal activity. When contacted repeatedly, the chancellor of the diocese finally responded to state that Fr. Mark Hodges was not suspended for participating in the rally. Despite the fact that this suspension had become an international news story, the chancellor refused to comment on why Fr. Mark was suspended, if not for participation in the rally. So of course, as you can see from the comments on our coverage, a huge fight ensued among the Faithful all over the Internet concerning the justness of the suspension and the underlying causes. The diocese never clarified the reasons for the suspension. A few months later, it was quietly announced that Fr. Mark’s suspension had been lifted. No explanation was given as to what, if anything, had changed. All that bad blood between faithful Orthodox Christians, all that bad press coverage internationally, and just like that – it all gets dropped down the memory hole. The lack of transparency harms the witness of the Orthodox Church, and seems to be driven by bishops not realizing or not caring how much controversy their actions stir up among the Faithful.
  • Archbishop Elpidophoros publicly endorsed extending Orthodox communion to unconverted spouses to help keep those in interfaith marriages from leaving the Church. That might help those in that particular situation, though in a way that actually harms those unworthily receiving communion. However, even discussing opening communion to the non-Orthodox caused faithful Greek Orthodox to denounce the idea as heresy. The Greek Archdiocese has already lost a large number of attending members in the past year (maybe as high as 30% in some surveys). If this change is implemented, doubtless more will leave. Priests and Faithful in other jurisdictions quickly began openly discussing the possibility of full-blown schism. If the Archbishop is trying to keep ethnic Greeks in the “fold” of the Church, this is going to backfire horribly. How could the Archbishop possibly be so isolated that not one faithful Orthodox Christian was there to tell him, “This is a terrible idea!”
  • On the Feast Day of St. Bartholomew, June 11th, Archbishop Elpidophoros presided over a Divine Liturgy at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan. On July 3, he was back at St. Bart’s in a more personal capacity to visit with their rector, Bp. Dean E. Wolfe. St. Bart’s has been criticized as “ground zero for the queering of Manhattan.” This level of engagement looks very much like an endorsement of the Episcopal Church’s homosexual-friendly agenda. As one commenter summed up this pattern of behavior by Archbishop Elpidophoros, “We cannot but conclude that the archbishop is sending the wrong message to his faithful followers.” Not only did the Archbishop do these things, but he highly publicized them. Does no one at the level of the Archdiocese understand how badly these actions are received among faithful Orthodox Christians? Or what ridicule the Orthodox Faith is being subjected to by those outside of the Church?
  • A recent encyclical from Archbishop Sotirios of Canada asserted that supporters of a single communion spoon are “pagan.” That was not received well by the long-suffering Greek community in Canada, and will likely drive away even more people.
  • Archbishop Elpidophoros famously marched with Black Lives Matter over a year ago. At the time, we wrote an article questioning the Archbishop lending his moral authority to a group associated not only with violence but also with abortion on demand, Marxist economic policies, homosexuality, transgenderism, and the disruption of the nuclear family. Not surprisingly, the progressive Orthodox over at Fordham University roundly applauded the Archbishop for his march. Many faithful Orthodox Christians were scandalized by his words and actions. The Archbishop’s support for BLM has never looked good, but it looks especially bad now since the group issued a statement siding with the
    Cuban Communist dictatorship against the brave people of Cuba who are in the streets demanding their freedom.
  • Even worse, in the middle of the pro-freedom protests, the Ecumenical Patriarch announced an official visit to Cuba this November at the invitation of the communist regime. This will be the EP’s second visit to Cuba. There is an Orthodox Cathedral in Cuba with the mosaic you see to the right of the EP receiving a key from mass murderer Fidel Castro. The plaque says, “THIS CATHEDRAL IS A GIFT FROM THE PEOPLE OF CUBA TO THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH AND TO ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW, FIDEL CASTRO RUZ -NOVEMBER 2003” Partnering with communists is not really a good look for Orthodox hierarchs, particularly when immortalized in a mosaic. A fact most normal parish priests and/or laypersons would be happy to inform the hierarchs of, if only they could.
  • His Eminence Metropolitan Ambrosios, the former Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Kalavryta and Aigialeia in northern Greece, recently published a lengthy list of abuses of the Orthodox Faith including: sacraments of heretics being recognized, donating the Qur’an as a sacred book, common prayers and concelebrations of bishops with heretics, metropolises locking churches and threatening priests, masks in front of the Holy Altar, single-use disposable spoons for distributing of the immaculate Body and Blood of our Christ, and bishops prohibiting the sacrament of Confession. It was a blistering call to change course and repent.

Repentance is Needed

His Eminence Metropolitan Ambrosios also said in his article, “Wherever there is Orthodoxy there are wounds.” That is true all over the globe. But despite those wounds, most of the hierarchy simply goes on with business as usual. Most acknowledge only the pandemic, while ignoring any of the pain and suffering caused by the hysterical, harmful responses to it. The one exception we have seen is Archbishop Mark of Philadelphia and Eastern America (Orthodox Church in America) who at least seems to “feel our pain“:

The past year has truly been a rollercoaster ride for all of us and we need to be mindful and considerate of those suffering from isolation, fear, anxiety, depression, substance abuse and loneliness, as well as those who have lost loved ones. Additionally, divisions occurred as people lost the ability to discuss differing opinions on a variety of matters.

While a welcome acknowledgment that bad things have happened, the archbishop’s statement is hardly repentance for the role he, and his fellow bishops, played in the “rollercoaster ride.” This lack of repentance over the Covid responses, the political missteps, and the ecumenist scandals is frequently discussed among Orthodox Christians. The attitude of the bishops has caused some Orthodox Christians to stop attending liturgy or to switch jurisdictions.

This really can’t continue. The most sincere and holy hierarchs will find it within themselves to set a public example of repentance for their mistakes. We also recognize that there appear to be Orthodox hierarchs who are intentionally trying to change the Orthodox Faith – either out of conformity to the world (weakness) or under demonic influence. They need to be called to repentance and held to account, particularly by other hierarchs.

The people will forgive hierarchs who embrace public repentance and flock to them. To minimize future mistakes, the best hierarchs will commit themselves to open communication, accountability, and transparency. They will not always take the advice of their priests and laity, but they will at least give them a fair hearing and avoid openly scandalizing them.

Fr. Demetrios was quite right, all we need is communication and repentance.

Shepherd, Know Your Sheep – Open Letter to Archbishop Sotirios

Below is a response from a Canadian Orthodox Christian to a recent encyclical from Archbishop Sotirios asserting that supporters of a single communion spoon are “pagan.” The full text of the Archbishop’s encyclical in Greek and English is published below this response. Your Eminence,

First and foremost, please do not combine the people that do not accept the existence of a Corona Virus or do not want to be vaccinated, together with the people that refuse to receive Holy Communion from multiple spoons. We are not the same. Most of the people that refuse to take Holy Communion with multiple spoons understand the Covid-19 problem and are fully vaccinated.

This brings us to the main issue. You are calling us idolaters because, to use your words, we have made the Lavida God and we worship the Lavida. You are wrong. We do not worship the Lavida. Worship belongs to God and God alone. Having said that, Christ’s body and blood cleanses the Lavida every time it is dipped into the Chalice. If you believe that anyone can get the virus from the Lavida, come out and say so. It looks like you are avoiding this issue because you know it is not true. Just like you cannot get the virus from Holy Communion because it is the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, you cannot get the virus from the Lavida because it is cleansed every time it touches the Body and Blood in the Chalice. This is not just an opinion; it is clearly stated in the New Testament:

Matthew 8:2, Mark 1:40, Luke 5:12:

A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”  Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. Jesus did not become a leper – the leper was cleansed.

Matthew 9:20-22, Mark 5:25, Luke 8:43-44:

Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped . According to the law (Leviticus 15:27) the woman was considered unclean and any one that she touched her was also unclean.Yet, instead of Jesus becoming unclean, it was the woman that was cleansed.

Christ as EucharistSt Dosetheos of Jerusalem in his Apology against the Protestants explains what we get with Holy Communion. In Holy Communion we have the same body of Christ, the one that was conceived by the Virgin Mary, the one that was born in Bethlehem, the one that was baptized in the Jordan river, suffered, was buried, resurrected, ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

The conclusion is this: Anything that touches Jesus or, anything that Jesus touches, is cleansed. Therefore, when the Lavida touches Jesus’ Body and Blood, it is cleansed even if it has a virus. You cannot get a virus by using the Lavidaunless you believe that Holy Communion is not the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. But again, when the clergy prays during the Divine Liturgy, he is asking God to “make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ” and “that which is in this cup the precious Blood of Your Christ”. Later he continues: “I believe and confess, Lord, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is truly Your pure Body and that this is Your precious Blood….”  If you truly believe that, then you should not doubt that Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

If Paul’s handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them (Acts 19:12) and if the shadow of Peter was enough to heal the people (Acts 5:15) how can the Lavida which touches Christ’s Body spread a virus?

Now that we know that you will never get a virus from the Lavida the question is why change things? Why the introduction of multiple spoons?

Here are some possible explanations. You circulated the first two:

Communion spoonFirst, the government dictated it. They will issue fines or even close churches. This is wrong. The government has no authority to tell us how to take Holy Communion. It is called freedom of religion. They told us this over and over again. They insist we wear masks and keep proper distances in the church and we do that. If it was dictated by the government, then all Orthodox would have the same issue. How is it that the Old Calendar Orthodox, the Serbian, the Russian churches and so on, have no problem using the same Lavida ever since we had the virus and nobody is doing anything about it?

Second, nobody reported those other churches. This is wrong again. Not too long ago, the Toronto Public Health department visited one of the Old Calendar Orthodox churches here in Toronto and they only wanted to make sure they were wearing masks and keeping proper distances. Someone from the church asked them, “What about taking Holy Communion with the same spoon?” They answered, ”This is beyond our jurisdiction. We cannot tell you how to take Holy Communion.” In plain English, this means, “How you take Holy Communion is none of our business.”

Here is a third explanation: You, alone, wanted to change how Holy Communion is distributed and you used the virus as an excuse. Isn’t it true that this discussion was made in the Archdiocese cafeteria long before the virus came? Isn’t it true that in one of your speeches you proposed that the ladies who prepare the prosphoron should use some wine in the dough, thereby even changing the process of the Divine Liturgy? Isn’t it true that you have done all this and more because you are an Ecumenist and a decorated Freemason?

In your encyclical, you say: “By your selfishness you deprive yourselves of the Body and Blood of Christ.” You are wrong again. We do not deprive ourselves of the Body and Blood of Christ. We refuse to accept that you can get the virus from the Lavida. We take it from the other Orthodox churches that have kept the same method for thousands of years and there is nothing you can do about it. By the way, if some left the New Calendar Orthodox churches and went to the Old Calendar churches, consider yourself responsible for this. It was your unorthodox actions that drove them to this change.

Corona virus is not only a Canadian problem – it is all over the world. Can you explain why not thousands but millions of Orthodox continue to use one Lavida throughout the whole pandemic, and thank God they are doing just fine? Or is it true that we, in Canada, became the guinea pigs to see if the use of multiple spoons will be accepted by some and then you try to impose it on every Orthodox?

If you still believe that you can get a virus from the Lavida, ask yourself who the idolater is?

You are asking us to confess our sins and find the right spiritual father. We already do that. Thank God not all spiritual fathers are allowing themselves to follow your ideas. Confession is still private and you cannot pretend to know what goes on behind closed doors.

Also, let us not forget that most heresies started from the clergy and even patriarchs.  You claim that archbishops, priests, elders, monks, nuns do not follow the right Orthodox spirit but that you do follow it. Isn’t that your own egotism?

Finally, you are asking us to repent and obey you. We repent every day, every hour, we never consider ourselves above anything or anyone. As for obeying, sorry but “We ought to obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). If you fear the Triune God, and not the Luciferian god, you, your Eminence, would do the same.

Η Θεία Κοινωνία είναι Σώμα και Αίμα Χριστού. Είναι φάρμακο αθανασίας. Η λαβίδα είναι ένα όργανο. Όργανο μετάδοσης της Θείας Κοινωνίας και τίποτε άλλο. Θεοποιείς τη λαβίδα; Είσαι ειδωλολάτρης.

Όλοι οι νεοφανείς αλάθητοι είναι ειδωλολάτρεις και δεν το καταλαβαίνουν. Φωνασκούν. Εμείς έχουμε την αλήθεια. Εμείς γνωρίζουμε καλύτερα. Εμείς είμαστε οι πραγματικοί ορθόδοξοι. Κανείς άλλος δεν ξέρει τίποτε. Ούτε οι κυβερνήτες. Ούτε οι γιατροί. Ούτε οι πατριάρχες. Οι αρχιερείς . Οι ιερείς. Όλα είναι σκευωρία. Όλα είναι του σατανά. Εμείς έχουμε την αλήθεια. Δεν χρειάζονται τα εμβόλια. Όλα είναι ψέματα.

Τι κρίμα; Που είναι η ταπείνωση; Δεν βλέπετε, ότι έχετε εωσφορικό εγωισμό; Αυτά διδάσκει η ορθόδοξη πίστη; Αυτά εμπνέει το Άγιο Πνεύμα; Όχι. Όλα είναι της δικής σας φαντασίας. Όλα είναι γεννήματα του εωσφορικού σας εγωισμού. Δεν βλέπετε πως πολλοί που υπεστήριζαν αυτά προσεβλήθησαν από τον κορωνοϊό και πόσοι πέθαναν; Τίποτε δεν μπορεί να σας συγκρατήσει; Κρίμα.

Αρχιερείς, ιερείς, γεροντάδες, μοναχοί, μοναχές, άνθρωποι απλοί που νομίζετε, ότι είστε ακραιφνείς ορθόδοξοι, καιρός να το ξανασκεφτείτε. Όλοι πρέπει να ενεργείτε υπεύθυνα. Αυτό σημαίνει, ότι αναγνωρίζετε, ότι ο κορωνοϊός είναι πραγματικότητα. Αναγνωρίζοντας αυτό πρέπει να δίνετε το καλό παράδειγμα. Πρώτοι εσείς να εμβολιαστείτε. Να γίνετε το παράδειγμα και να οδηγείτε όλους στον εμβολιασμό. Να σωθούμε από την επάρατο αυτή ασθένεια του κορωνοϊού.

Με τον εγωισμό σας στερείτε τον εαυτό σας από το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Χριστού. Σκανδαλίζετε τους πιστούς τρέχοντας σε παλαιοημερολογίτες και σε άλλους που δεν ακολουθούν το σωστό ορθόδοξο πνεύμα για να εξυπηρετηθείτε. Αυτό εκτός από ασέβεια είναι και μη εμπιστοσύνη στον Σταυρωμένο και Αναστημένο Χριστό.

Συνέλθετε. Μετανοείτε. Αναλογιστείτε το κακό που κάνετε. Οδηγείτε τους εαυτούς σας στην κόλαση και παίρνετε κι άλλους στο λαιμό σας.

Ταπείνωση και σύνεση. Η ταπείνωση είναι η βάση όλων των αρετών. Η σύνεση είναι η συνισταμένη όλων των αρετών. Προσευχηθείτε. Ζητήστε τον φωτισμό του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Βρείτε σωστούς πνευματικούς. Εξομολογηθείτε. Κλάψτε για τις αμαρτίες σας. Ζητήστε από τον εύσπλαχνο Θεό την συγχώρεσή σας. Θα σας συγχωρέσει. Είναι πολυεύσπλαχνος. Αυτή είναι η πραγματικότητα. Όλα τα άλλα είναι δημιουργήματα του εωσφορικού εγωισμού σας.

What a shame that you refuse to understand this. You continue to think that you are more orthodox than others. You shout in all directions that you possess the truth. Without realizing it, you deify the spoon. Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ. It is medicine for immortality. The communion spoon is merely an instrument. It is a vehicle through which Holy Communion is given and nothing else. Do you worship the communion spoon? Then you are a pagan.

All of the newly proclaimed infallible are pagans without even realizing it. They howl that they have the truth. That they know better. That they are the genuine orthodox believers. That no one really understands what is happening in the world. Not the governments. Not the doctors. Not the patriarchs. Not the hierarchs. Not the priests.

For these people, conspiracy is everywhere. Everything comes from Satan. Only they have the truth. Vaccines are not necessary. Everything is a lie. It is all propaganda. They do not want us to listen to the scientists but to listen to what they have to say. They are the infallible. They have even surpassed the Pope, yet they claim to be genuinely Orthodox.

What a shame! Where is the humility? Can you not see your luciferian egotism? Is this what the Orthodox faith teaches? Is this what the Holy Spirit inspires? No. All of this is in your imagination. All of this is a product of your luciferian egotism. Do you not see that many who supported these ideas were infected with the coronavirus and some have died? Can nothing restrain you? What a pity.

Hierarchs, priests, elders, monks, nuns, ordinary people, all of you who think that you are more genuinely orthodox than the others, it is time to think again. You need to act responsibly. You need to recognize that the coronavirus is a reality. In recognizing this, you must set a good example for others. Be the first to get vaccinated. Become an example and lead everyone to get their vaccines. So we could finally save ourselves from this accursed coronavirus disease.

By your selfishness, you deprive yourselves of the Body and Blood of Christ. You scandalize the faithful by running to old calendarists and others who do not follow the true orthodox faith. This is not only disrespectful but also distrustful to the Crucified and Risen Christ.

Get a grip on yourselves. Repent. Think about the evil you are doing. You are leading yourselves to Hades and dragging others with you.

Think about humility and prudence. Humility is the basis of all virtues, and prudence represents the broader coherence, the resulting outcome of the virtues. You need to pray. To ask for the Holy Spirit to enlighten you. Find suitable spiritual fathers and confess. Cry for your sins. Ask the merciful God to forgive you. He will forgive you. He is merciful. This is the reality. Everything else is a product of your luciferian egotism.

How and Why the Jesus Prayer?

 “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner”

The “Jesus Prayer,” loved and practiced by many, misunderstood and discouraged by others, has been widely taught and discussed throughout the history of the Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church has a great many beautiful and important prayers for numerous needs and occasions. However, the Jesus Prayer, often repeated continually, has gained high esteem by many saints and spiritual fathers as a way of learning to “pray without ceasing,” a practice which cleanses and opens up, first the mind and then the heart. Those who diligently practice the Prayer first acquire the Prayer of the Mind or the Noetic Prayer (Νοερά Προσευχή) and then the Prayer of the Heart (Καρδιακή Προσευχή). The Prayer of the Heart is considered to be the Unceasing Prayer that the Apostle Paul advocates in the New Testament, when he says “pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

According to Wikipedia, the origin of the Jesus Prayer is probably the Egyptian desert, which was settled in the 5th century by the monastic Desert Fathers (such as St. Anthony the Great) and Desert Mothers (such as Saints Syncletica and Theodora of Alexandria). A formula similar to the standard form of the Jesus Prayer is found in a letter written by Saint John Chrysostom (347 – 407 AD). This letter speaks of “Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy” and “Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on us” being used as ceaseless prayer.

Possibly the earliest explicit reference to the Jesus Prayer in today’s fuller form, can be found in Discourse on Abba Philimon from the Philokalia.  Philimon, who lived around 600 AD, cited, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me.”

Why, of all the prayers known to us, has the Jesus Prayer entered our Holy Tradition as the unceasing Prayer of the Heart; and why not the prayer “I thank you, I glorify you, lord, have mercy on me,” which was recently innovated and recommended by Archbishop Sotirios on January 24, 2021?  What is the difference between these two prayers?

First, Saint Theophan regarded the Jesus Prayer stronger than all other prayers by virtue of the power of the Holy Name of Jesus. When Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?” He got several answers from them, including John the Baptist, Elijah and one of the prophets. However, when He asked, “but whom do you say that I am?” Simon Peter jumped up with “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” Then Jesus replied, “Blessed are you Simon…for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood but by My Father in Heaven.” (Matthew 16:13-18) “(For)…no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:3)

By this we see that the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, speaks through us when we confess Jesus as the Messiah, and as the Son of the Living God, for the Son is the second Person of the Holy Trinity (i.e. God, Himself), and not some dead (false) god, for there are many false gods that people worship and refer to as “lord.” Therefore, when we say Lord (i.e. God), Jesus Christ (the anointed one), Son of God…” we are witnessing that Jesus is the Messiah (the anointed one) and God. The name of Jesus in the proper context carries so much power, that the Desert Fathers and Mothers who were sorely tempted by the demons in the wilderness used this prayer to strengthen themselves in their spiritual struggles against the dark forces of Satan. We, too, as we live our lives in the spiritual wilderness of today’s world, can use the Jesus prayer to protect ourselves from the daily temptations of the evil one.

“I thank you, I glorify you, lord, have mercy on me,” is a prayer which does not mention the name of Jesus, the Saviour of the world, nor does it acknowledge Him as God. It is, therefore, a weak prayer with which to do battle with demons who tremble at the name of Jesus.

Second, the Jesus Prayer actually dates back even further than Wikipedia indicates, for it is not a mere or random invention of the 5th century Elders (Γεροντάδες) of our Church. As we see below, it originates as far back as the first century, for it combines three Bible verses found in Holy Scripture:

(i)  The Christological hymn of St. Paul: “…being in the form of God, He (Jesus) thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; and…as a man, He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. For this reason, God has highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phillipians 2:6-11)

(ii)  The Annunciation: “And the angel said…fear not, Mary, for you have found favour with God; and behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a son and shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give to him the throne of his father David; and he shall reign…for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end…The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you. Therefore, that Holy Thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:30-35)

(iii)  The Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican (sinful tax collector) spoken by Jesus, Himself: “To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people – robbers, evildoers, adulterers – or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 18:9-14)

Publican and PhariseeHere we see that Jesus, Himself, teaches the Jesus Prayer and He completes it with the words, “a sinner.” Notice Jesus does not correct the prayer of the tax collector. He does not say the tax collector should have said “I thank you, I glorify you, lord have mercy on me.” Instead, He says the tax collector went home justified; whereas the Pharisee, who did thank God, but did so, proudly boasting of his good works, was not justified. This means that the Jesus Prayer has not only great power against demons because of the name of Jesus, but also the power to save us from sin because of the great humility and repentance found in the words of confession, “have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Third, there are many other Biblical references in which Jesus, Himself, endorses the Jesus Prayer. Consider the cleansing of the ten lepers. “… as Jesus entered a certain village, there met Him ten lepers, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (Luke 17:12-13) Note how they called him by his name, Jesus. They also said Master, meaning Lord or God. They approached Him for the miracle because they first acknowledged that Jesus is God. This was their public declaration of faith. Jesus healed them all of their leprosy and note that He did not correct the way they addressed Him. He did not say, “No, don’t say, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us,’ but rather say, ‘We thank you, we glorify you, lord have mercy on us’, because that is more correct.” He did not say that at all! He healed them straightaway, but He did expect them all to thank God after they were healed.

Consider also the blind man who was begging by the roadside near Jericho. When he heard that Jesus was passing by, he called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and asked him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,”… Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God.” (Luke 18:35-43)

Note that Jesus did not correct the blind man who called out to Him in this manner, and also called Him Son of David, which, according to Old Testament prophecy, is the Messiah (the anointed Christ). The blind man did not call Jesus, ‘son of Joseph’ as had some others, who did not believe He was the Messiah. “Then they scoffed, isn’t this the carpenter’s son?…and they took offense at Him.” (Matthew 13:54-58) Instead, the blind man called Him “Son of David.” Despite being blind and unable to read, even the blind man knew that “Son of David” is a Messianic title which originates in the Old Testament, because God promised King David that one of his descendants would rule forever. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the City of David, and according to his earthly genealogy and Mosaic Law, He was understood as the son of Joseph, the carpenter, whose ancestor was King David. In Matthew’s Gospel, there are six instances where Jesus is called “Son of David.”

There are many more Biblical references which name Jesus and confirm His Divinity. Let us examine some of these:

(i)   As soon as Nathaniel, the Disciple, met Jesus, he cried out, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (John 1:49) and Jesus did not correct him, because there was nothing to correct.

(ii)   St. Paul, the Apostle to the Nations, writes: “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9) “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)

(iii)   St. Peter, the Apostle, said to the lame beggar, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” (Acts 3:6)

(iv)   The Evangelists write: “The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord (Jesus), even the demons are subject to us in your name!’ (Luke 10:17) “And whenever the unclean spirits saw him (Jesus), they fell down before him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God.’” (Mark 3:11) Also, “…a man with an unclean spirit…cried out, “What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!…” (Mark 1:21-28)

(v)   Jesus, Himself, said: (i) “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58) thereby affirming that He is the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the triune God, Who existed before time began. (ii) He also promised, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13) (iii) He likewise prophesied,And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” (Mark 16:17-18)

Christ at center of communionTherefore, dear reader, not only is the Jesus Prayer correct, but there are no other words which can substitute for the divinely inspired words, “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” With these words, we confess our faith that Jesus is the Master of all (Lord); that He is the anointed Messiah (Christ) who came to redeem the world from sin; that He is begotten of the father (Son of God) and is therefore of the same essence as the Father, meaning Divine. Furthermore, by uttering His human name, Jesus, we also acknowledge His dual nature as God and Man, or the God-Man, who was born of the Virgin Mary so that he could live, suffer and die like a man, to save mankind. As the only perfect and sinless human, He became High Priest for us, offering Himself on the cross as the ultimate sacrifice to make atonement for our sins and re-unite us with the Father. He alone became the Offerοr and the Offering. All of this was accomplished by none other than Jesus.

“Jesus Christ the faithful witness, (is) the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. (He) has freed us from our sins by His blood.” (Revelation 1:5) “For there is one God, and there is one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5) “Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.” (Hebrews 4:14)

Our confession is the Jesus Prayer, which is supported by reams of Holy Scripture, contains volumes of Orthodox theology and great power. It was not just any “lord,” not Mohammad, not Allah, not Buddha, not Brahma, or any other deity who died for us and shattered the gates of Hell. Only the crucified Lord Jesus destroyed the power of Sin and Death and Satan’s hold on mankind. This is why the demons tremble at the name of Jesus. This is why the elders (Γεροντάδες) of our Holy Orthodox Church ceaselessly pray the Jesus Prayer – to ward off demonic temptations and spiritual attacks, by exercising humility and ceaselessly calling on the name of Jesus.

To remove the name of Jesus, keeping only the unassigned word “lord,” enables several threats to erode our Orthodox faith and identity and to jeopardize our salvation:

First, the newly innovated prayer advances pagan and polytheistic Ecumenism, which for years, has been focusing only on “common ground” to promote a type of “love” that ignores differences and Truth. “I thank you, I glorify you, lord, have mercy on me,” is a non-denominational prayer that can be comfortably spoken by any Jain, any Jew, any Hindu, any Sikh, any Zoroastrian, any Muslim, even any idol or Luciferian worshipper. This prayer is not only un-Orthodox, it is even un-Christian.

Second, removing the name of Jesus replaces a Confession of Faith with a Denial of Faith. Are we suddenly afraid or ashamed to identify as Christians by saying the name of Jesus? A denial of faith threatens our salvation! Jesus said, “…whosoever shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in Heaven.  But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in Heaven.” (Matthew 10:33-34)

Second Coming ChristThird, by removing the name of Jesus, thousands of years of sacred prophecies, Biblical teachings and Patristic dogma become discounted and overturned, arbitrarily and for no good reason. This is unacceptable if we wish to maintain an Orthodox identity. On judgment day, when everyone rises from the dead, including all those who lived before us, it will be difficult to justify in the presence of God and His martyrs, any disobedience to the words of St. Paul, “Do not get carried away by various and strange teachings,” (Hebrews 13:9) even if the strange teachings came from someone that has the title of a bishop. Let us not forget that historically, the majority of heresies battled by the Orthodox Church, came from wayward bishops!

The more one utters the proposed innovated prayer, instead of the Jesus Prayer, the further away one drifts from Jesus, the Orthodox ethos and ecclesial consciousness, and the closer one draws towards heresy. “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light…Their end will correspond to their deeds.” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15)

I hope and pray that the innovated prayer was an unintended error in judgment on the part of his Eminence Sotirios, and not another assault against those who adhere to Patristic Holy Orthodox Tradition. Those who are not interested in Orthodox Tradition are free to leave and join other jurisdictions anytime they wish; but we, the faithful, will not follow them…

Πως και Γιατí η ευχή «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, Υιέ Θεού ελέησòν με τον αμαρτωλό»?

Η «Ευχή», αγαπητή και συνηθισμένη απο πολλούς, αλλά παρεξηγημένη και προς αποφυγή απο αλλους, έχει διδαχθεί και συζητηθεί ευρέως σε όλη την διάρκεια της ιστορίας της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας.  Η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία έχει πολλαπλές σημαντικές και όμορφες προσευχές που αρμόζουν σε αναρίθμητες ανάγκες και περιστάσεις.  Πάντως, η «Ευχή», συχνά και συνεχώς επαναλαμβανομένη, εχει αποκτίσει υψηλό κύρος από πολλούς αγίους και πνευματικούς πατέρες ως ένας τρόπος εκμάθησης της «αδιάλειπτης προσευχής», μία πράξη η οποία πρώτα καθαρίζει και διανοίγει τον νου, και κατόπιν την καρδιά.  Όσοι ασκούν με επιμέλεια την Ευχή πρώτα αποκτούν την Νοερά Προσευχή, και μετέπειτα την Καρδιακή Προσευχή.  Η Καρδιακή Προσευχή φέρεται να ειναι η «αδιάλειπτη προσευχή» που παροτρύνει ο Απόστολος Παύλος στην Καινή Διαθήκη, όταν λέει «αδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε» (1 Θεσ. 5,17).

Κατά την Wikipedia, οι ρίζες της Ευχής πιθανολογούνται στην έρημο της Αιγύπτου, στην οποία εγκαταστάθηκαν τον 5ο αιώνα οι ερημίτες-μοναχοί Πατέρες της Ερήμου (όπως ο Μέγας Αντώνιος), και οι Μητέρες της Ερήμου (όπως οι αγίες Συγκλητική και Θεοδώρα Αλεξανδρείας).  Σε μιά επιστολή του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Χρυσοστόμου (347-407 μ.Χ.) βρίσκεται μια σύνταξη με ομοιότητες προς την συνηθισμένη μορφή της Ευχής.  Αυτή η επιστολή αναφέρει το «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, Υιέ Θεού Ελέησον», και το «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ Υιέ Θεού ελέησον ημάς» ως αδιάλειπτη προσευχή.

Ίσως η αρχαιότερη επίσημη αναφορά στην Ευχή με την σημερινή της ολοκληρωμένη μορφή να βρίσκεται στον Λόγο περί του αββά Φιλήμονος, (Φιλοκαλία των Ιερών Νηπτικών, Τόμος Β’).  Ο Φιλήμων, ο οποίος έζησε κατα το 600 μ.Χ. ανέφερε το «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, Υιέ του Θεού, ελέησόν με».

Γιατί άραγε εντάχθηκε η Ευχή στην Αγία μας Παράδοση, μεταξύ όλων των γνωστών μας προσευχών, ως η αδιάλειπτη Καρδιακή Προσευχή, και όχι η προσευχή που προσφάτως επινόησε και πρότεινε ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος στις 24.1.2021 – «Σε ευχαριστώ, Σε δοξάζω Κύριε, ελέησόν με»; Ποία η διαφορά μεταξύ των δύο αυτών προσευχών;

Κατ’αρχήν, ο Άγιος Θεοφάνης ο αναχωριτής θεωρούσε την Ευχή ως ισχυρότερη απο τις υπόλοιπες προσευχές λόγω της δυνάμεως του Αγίου Ονόματος του Ιησού.  Όταν ο Ιησούς ρώτησε τους μαθητές Του «Ποιός λένε οι άνθρωποι οτι είναι ο Υιός του ανθρώπου;» έλαβε διάφορες απαντήσεις από αυτούς, συμπεριλαμβανομένων του Ιωάννου του Βαπτιστού, του Προφήτη Ηλία, του Προφήτη Ιερεμία, και ενός άλλου προφήτη.  Όμως όταν τους ρώτησε «Εσείς όμως ποιός λέτε ότι είμαι;» ο Σίμωνας Πέτρος έσπευσε με το «Εσύ είσαι ο Χριστός, ο Υιός του Θεού του ζώντος.»  Τότε ο Ιησούς απάντησε «Μακάριος ει Σίμωνδιότι αυτό δεν σου το απεκάλυψαν η σάρκα και το αίμα, αλλά ο Πατέρας μου στους ουρανούς» (Ματ. 16,13-18).  «Διότι…κανείς δεν μπορεί να πει ότι ο Ιησούς είναι Κύριος, παρά μόνο με το Άγιο Πνεύμα» (1 Κορ. 12-3).

Έτσι βλέπουμε ότι το Άγιο Πνεύμα, το τρίτο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδος, ομιλεί διαμέσω μας όταν ομολογούμε τον Ιησού ως Χριστό και ως τον Υιό του ζώντος Θεού, επειδή ο Υιός είναι το δεύτερο Πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδος (δηλ. ο Θεός ο Ίδιος), και όχι κάποιος νεκρός (ψεύτικος) θεός, διότι υπάρχουν πολλοί ψευτο-θεοί τους οποίους άνθρωποι λατρεύουν και αποκαλούν «κύριο».  Έτσι λοιπόν, όταν λεμε «Κύριε (δηλ. Θεέ) Ιησού Χριστέ (εκείνος που φέρει το χρίσμα), Υιέ Θεού…» μαρτυρούμε ότι ο Ιησούς είναι ο Χριστός (ο φέρων το χρίσμα) και Θεός. Πλαισιομένο σωστά, το όνομα του Ιησού φέρει τόση ισχύ, ώστε οι Πατέρες και Μητέρες της ερήμου, δεινά πειραζόμενοι από τα δαιμόνια, χρησιμοποιούσαν αυτή την Ευχή για να ενισχυθούν στους πνευματικούς τους αγώνες εναντίον των σκοτεινών δυνάμεων του Σατανά.  Και εμείς λοιπόν, βιώνοντας την ζωή μας στην πνευματική έρημο του σημερινού κόσμου, μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε την Ευχή για να προστατεύσουμε τους εαυτούς μας απο τους καθημερινούς πειρασμούς του πονηρού.

Το «Σε ευχαριστώ, Σε δοξάζω, Κύριε ελέησόν με» είναι μια προσευχή η οποία ΔΕΝ αναφέρει το όνομα του Ιησού, του Σωτήρα του κόσμου, αλλά και ούτε Τον αναγνωρίζει ως Θεό.  Άρα, αποτελεί μία αποδυναμωμένη προσευχή για μια μάχη με τους δαίμονες οι οποίοι τρέμουν στο άκουσμα του ονόματος του Ιησού.

Δεύτερον, η Ευχή χρονολογείται ακόμα νωρίτερα από την εποχή που επισημαίνει η Wikipedia, διότι δεν πρόκειται για μια απλή η τυχαία εφεύρεση των εκκλησιαστικών μας Γερόντων του 5ου αιώνα.  Όπως παρατηρούμε παρακάτω, η προέλευσή της χρονολογείται και από τον 1ο αιώνα, διότι συνδυάζει τρία ρητά της Αγίας Γραφής:

α) Τον Χριστολογικό Ύμνο του Αποστόλου Παύλου:  «…ο Οποίος (Ιησούς) υπάρχων σε μορφή Θεού, δεν θεώρησε το ότι ήταν ίσος με τον Θεό σαν κάτι προς αρπαγμό (κλοπή), αλλά εκένωσε τον εαυτόν Του, έλαβε μορφή δούλου, και έγινε όμοιος προς τους ανθρώπους.  Και βρισκόμενος σε μορφή ανθρώπου,  εταπείνωσε τον εαυτόν Του, γενόμενος υπάκουος μέχρι θανάτου, και μάλιστα θανάτου σταυρικού.  Για αυτό ο Θεός Τον υπερύψωσε, και Του χάρισε το υψηλότερο Όνομα από όλα τα ονόματα, για να κάμψει κάθε γόνατο στο όνομα του Ιησού, στον ουρανό, στην γη και στα καταχθόνια (υπό της γης),  και κάθε γλώσσα να ομολογήσει οτι ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι Κύριος εις δόξαν του Θεού Πατρός.» (Φιλ. 2,6-11)

β) Τον Ευαγγελισμό:  «..και της είπε ο άγγελος, μη φοβάσαι Μαριάμ. Διότι βρήκες χάρη από τον Θεό. Και δες, θα συλλάβεις στην κοιλία σου, και θα τέξεις υιό, και θα καλέσεις το όνομά του Ιησού.  Αυτός θα γίνει μέγας, και θα αποκαλεσθεί Υιός του Υψίστου, και θα του δώσει ο Κύριος ο Θεός τον θρόνο του Δαυίδ, του πατέρα Του, και θα βασιλεύσει…για πάντα, και η βασιλεία Του δεν θα έχει τέλος ποτέ…Το Άγιο Πνεύμα θα επέλθει έπανω σου, και η Δύναμη του Υψίστου θα σε επισκιάσει.  Για αυτό, θα αποκαλείται Υιός του Θεού το άγιο [τέκνο] που θα γεννηθεί.» (Λκ. 1,30-35)

γ) Την Παραβολή του Τελώνου (αμαρτωλού φοροεισπράκτορα)  και Φαρισαίου αφηγημένη απο τον Ιησού τον Ίδιο: «και είπε την εξής παραβολή για κάποιους οι οποίοι είχαν την πεποίθηση ότι ήσαν δίκαιοι ενώ εξουθενούσαν τους υπολοίπους…Δύο άνθρωποι ανέβηκαν στο ιερό να προσευχηθούν, ο ένας Φαρισαίος, και ο άλλος τελώνης.  Ο Φαρισαίος στέκοντας όρθιος, προσευχόταν στον εαυτό του (προς εαυτόν) τα ακόλουθα: Σε ευχαριστώ Θεέ, ότι δεν είμαι σαν τους λοιπούς ανθρώπους – άρπαγες, άδικοι, μοιχοί – η ακόμη σαν αυτόν εδώ τον τελώνη.  Νηστεύω δύο φορές την εβδομάδα, αποδεκατώ τα πάντα όσα αποκτώ.  Ο δε τελώνης, στεκόμενος μακρυά, ούτε τα μάτια του δεν ήθελε να σηκώσει προς τον ουρανό, αλλά χτυπούσε το στήθος του λέγοντας: Ο Θεός ιλάσθητι μοι τω αμαρτωλώ (Ο Θεός δείξε μου έλεος [ελέησόν με], εμένα τον αμαρτωλό). Σας λέω οτί αυτός (ο τελώνης) επέστρεψε στο σπίτι του δικαιωμένος, και όχι εκείνος (ο Φαρισαίος).  Ότι όποιος υψώνει τον εαυτόν του θα ταπεινωθεί, και όποιος ταπεινώνεται θα υψωθεί.» (Λκ. 18,9-14)

Σε αυτό το σημείο βλέπουμε ότι ο Ίδιος ο Ιησούς διδάσκει την Ευχή, και την συμπληρώνει με τις λέξεις «τω αμαρτωλώ». Παρατηρήστε οτι ο Ιησούς δεν διορθώνει την προσευχή του τελώνου.  Δεν λέει ότι ο τελώνης θα έπρεπε να πει «Σε ευχαριστώ, Σε δοξάζω, Κύριε ελέησόν με».  Αντιθέτως, μας λέει οτι ο τελώνης επέστρεψε στο σπίτι του δικαιωμένος, και ο δε Φαρισαίος, ο οποίος όντως ευχαρίστησε τον Θεό, αλλά με έναν υπερήφανο τρόπο, καυχόμενος για τις καλές του πράξεις, ΔΕΝ δικαιώθηκε. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι η Ευχή δεν περιορίζεται στο να έχει μεγάλη δύναμη εναντίον των δαιμόνων λόγω του ονόματος του Ιησού, αλλά επίσης έχει την δύναμη να μας γλυτώσει από την αμαρτία επειδή τα λόγια ομολογίας «ελέησόν με τον αμαρτωλό» περιέχουν μεγάλη ταπείνωση και μετάνοια.

Τρίτον, υπάρχουν πολλές άλλες παραπομπές στην Αγία Γραφή στις οποίες ο Ιησούς ο Ίδιος υποστηρίζει την Ευχή. Θυμηθείτε τον καθαρισμό των δέκα λεπρών… «και ερχόμενος σε ένα χωριό, Τον συνάντησαν δέκα λεπροί άνδρες, οι οποίοι στέκονταν από μακρυά, και φώναξαν λέγοντες Ιησού Επιστάτα, ελέησον ημάς.» (Λκ. 17, 12-13).  Παρατηρήστε πως τον αποκαλούν με το όνομά του, Ιησού.  Επίσης τον αποκαλούν Επιστάτη, που σημαινει Κύριος, η Θεός.  Τον πλησιάσανε ζητώντας το θαύμα επειδή πρώτα αναγνωρίσανε ότι ο Ιησούς ειναι Θεός. Αυτή ήταν η δημόσιά τους ομολογία πίστης. Ο Ιησούς τους γιάτρεψε από την λέπρα τους, και παρατηρήστε ότι ΔΕΝ διόρθωσε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο Τον απεκάλεσαν. Δεν τους είπε «Όχι, μην λέτε το Ιησού Επιστάτα, ελέησον ημάς, αλλά καλύτερα πείτε το Σε ευχαριστούμε, Σε δοξάζουμε, Κύριε ελέησον ημάς, επειδή αυτό είναι το πιο σωστό..». Δεν το είπε αυτό καθόλου! Τους ίασε αμέσως, αλλά είχε βεβαίως την προσδοκία ότι θα ευχαριστούσαν τον Θεό έπειτα απο την ίασή τους.

Σκεφτείτε και τον τυφλό ο οποίος ζητιάνευε παράπλευρα του δρόμου κοντά στην Ιεριχώ.  Όταν άκουσε ότι ο Ιησούς περνούσε, φώναξε «Ιησού, Υιέ Δαυίδ, ελέησόν με. Και εκείνοι που προηγούνταν τον επετιμούσαν να σιωπήσει, αλλά εκείνος πιό  πολύ φώναζε Υιέ Δαυίδ, ελέησόν με.» Ο Ιησούς σταμάτησε και τον ρώτησε «Τι θέλεις να κάνω για εσένα; Κύριε, να δω το φως μου (να αναβλέψω). Και ο Κύριος του είπε Ανάβλεψε!  Η πίστη σου σε έσωσε.  Και αμέσως ανέβλεψε, και ακολούθησε τον Ιησού, δοξάζοντας τον Θεό.» (Λκ. 18, 35-43)

Παρατηρούμε ότι ο Ιησούς ΔΕΝ διόρθωσε τον τυφλό ο οποίος Του απευθύνθηκε με αυτόν τον τρόπο, αποκαλώντας Τον Υιό του Δαυίδ, ο οποίος κατά τις προφητείες της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης είναι ο Μεσσίας (ο Χριστός).  Ο τυφλός δεν αποκάλεσε τον Ιησού «υιό του Ιωσήφ» όπως κάνανε κάποιοι άλλοι οι οποίοι δεν πιστεύανε ότι ήταν ο Μεσσίας. «δεν είναι αυτός ο γιός του μαραγκού (τέκτονος);» (Ματ. 13,55)… «και σκανδαλίζονταν από Αυτόν»(Ματ. 13,57).  Αντιθέτως, ο τυφλός τον απεκάλεσε «Υιό του Δαυίδ».   Χωρίς να μπορεί να διαβάσει επειδή ήταν τυφλός, ακόμα όμως και εκείνος γνώριζε οτι ο τίτλος «Υιός του Δαυίδ» πρόκειται για περιγραφή του Μεσσία που προέρχεται από την Παλαιά Διαθήκη, επειδή ο Θεός υποσχέθηκε στον Βασιλέα Δαυίδ ότι ένας από τους απογόνους του θα βασίλευε για πάντα.  Ο Ιησούς γεννήθηκε στην Βηθλεέμ, την Πόλη του Δαυίδ, και κατά την επίγεια γενεολογία και τον Μωσαϊκό Νόμο, Τον κατανοούσαν ως τον υιό του Ιωσήφ, του μαραγκού, του οποίου ο πρόγονος ήταν ο Βασιλέας Δαυίδ.  Στο κατά Ματθαίον Ευαγγέλιο, υπάρχουν έξι περιπτώσεις οπού αναφέρεται ο Ιησούς ως «Υιός του Δαυίδ».

Υπάρχουν αρκετές άλλες παραπομπές στις Γραφές που ονομάζουν τον Ιησού και βεβαιώνουν την Θεότητά Του.  Ας εξετάσουμε μερικές από αυτές:

α) Μόλις συνάντησε τον Ιησού ο Ναθαναήλ ο Μαθητής, ανεφώνησε «Ραββί, Εσύ είσαι ο Υιός του Θεού, Εσύ είσαι ο Βασιλέας του Ισραήλ!» (Ιω. 1, 49) και ο Ιησούς δεν τον διόρθωσε, διότι δεν υπήρχε τίποτα να διορθώσει.

β) Ο Απόστολος Παύλος, ο Απόστολος των Εθνών γράφει «και δεν υπάρχει σε κανέναν άλλον η σωτηρία, διότι δεν υπάρχει κανένα άλλο όνομα υπό του ουρανού που να έχει δοθεί στους ανθρώπους και δια του οποίου πρέπει να σωθούμε.»(Πρα. 4, 12). «η ανταμοιβή της αμαρτίας είναι ο θάνατος, το δε χάρισμα του Θεού η αιώνια ζωή, εν Χριστώ Ιησού τω Κυρίω ημών.» (Ρωμ. 6, 23). «Ότι εάν ομολογήσεις με το στόμα σου τον Ιησού ως Κύριο, και πιστεύσεις με την καρδιά σου οτι ο Θεός τον ανέστησε από τους νεκρούς, θα σωθείς.» (Ρωμ. 10, 9). «Και ό,τι πράξετε, εν λόγω η εν έργω, όλα κάντε τα στο όνομα του Κυρίου Ιησού, ευχαριστούντες τον Θεό δι’Αυτού.» (Κολ. 3, 17).

γ) Ο Απόστολος Πέτρος είπε στον χωλό ζητιάνο, «δεν έχω αργύριο και χρυσάφι, αλλά εκείνο που έχω σου το δίνω.  Στο όνομα του Ιησού Χριστού του Ναζωραίου, σήκω και περπάτα!» (Πρα. 3, 6).

δ) Οι Ευαγγελιστές γράφουν – «Οι εβδομήκοντα-δύο επέστρεψαν με χαρά λέγοντες Κύριε και τα δαιμόνια υποτάσσονται σε έμας εν τω ονόματί Σου.»(Λκ. 10, 17). «Και τα πνεύματα τα ακάθαρτα, όταν τον είδαν, έπεφταν μπροστά του φωνάζοντας και λέγοντας ότι Εσύ είσαι ο Υιός του Θεού.» (Μαρ. 3,, 11). Επίσης «…ανθρωπος με πνεύμα ακάθαρτο μέσα του…φώναξε Τι έχεις με έμας Ιησού Ναζαρηνέ; Ήλθες να μας καταστρέψεις; Γνωρίζω ποιός Είσαι, ο Αγιος του Θεού. Αλλά ο Ιησούς τον επετίμησε λέγοντας, φιμώσου, και βγες από αυτόν!» (Μαρ. 1, 21-28)

ε) Ο Ίδιος ο Ιησούς είπε: 1) «Αμήν λέγω υμίν, ότι πριν γεννηθεί ο Αβραάμ, υπάρχω Εγώ.» (Ιω. 8, 58) καθορίζοντας έτσι οτι εΙναι το Δεύτερο Πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τρίαδος, του Τριάδικου Θεού, ο Οποίος υπήρχε και πριν αρχίσει ο χρόνος.  2) Υποσχέθηκε επίσης «και ό,τι αν ζητήσετε στο όνομά μου, θα το κάνω για να δοξασθεί ο Πατέρας μέσω του Υιού.» (Ιω. 14, 13) …3) Επίσης προφήτευσε «σημεία θα ακολουθήσουν εκείνους που έχουν πιστεύσει. Θα εκβάλλουν δαιμόνια στο όνομά μου, νέες γλώσσες θα μίλουν, και φίδια θα κρατούν στα χέρια τους, και ό,τι θανάσιμο και να πιούν δεν θα τους βλάψει…θα βάζουν τα χέρια τους επάνω στους αρρώστους, και θα γίνονται καλά.» (Μαρ. 16, 17-18)

Έτσι λοιπόν, αγαπητέ αναγνώστη, όχι μόνο είναι ορθή η Ευχή, αλλά δεν υπάρχουν άλλες λέξεις οι οποίες μπορούν να αντικαταστήσουν τις θεόπνευστες λέξεις «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, Υιέ Θεού, ελέησόν με τον αμαρτωλό». Με αυτά τα λόγια ομολογούμε την πίστη μας ότι ο Ιησούς είναι ο Κύριος όλων, ότι είναι ο χρισμένος Μεσσίας (Χριστός) που ήρθε να σώσει τον κόσμο άπο την αμαρτία, ότι ειναι εκ του Πατρός γεννηθής (Υιός του Θεού) και κατά συνέπεια ομοούσιος με τον Πατέρα, δηλαδή Θεϊκός. Εν συνεχεία, με το να λέμε το ανθρώπινο όνομά Του, Ιησούς, αναγνωρίζουμε και τις δυό Του φύσεις, ως Θεό και Άνθρωπο, η ως τον Θεάνθρωπο, που ετέχθη από την Παρθένο Μαρία για να ζήσει, να υποφέρει, και να υποστεί τον θάνατο ως άνθρωπος, για να σώσει την ανθρωπότητα.  Ως ο μόνος τέλειος και αναμάρτητος άνθρωπος, έγινε ο Αρχιερέας μας, προσφέροντας τον εαυτόν Του στον σταυρό, ως την έσχατη θυσία για την εξιλέωση των αμαρτιών μας, και για να μας ξαναενώσει με τον Πατέρα.  Ο Ίδιος έγινε και ο Θυσιαστής και η Θυσία. Όλα αυτά δεν κατορθώθηκαν από κανέναν άλλον, εκτός από τον Ιησού.

«…και από Ιησού Χριστού, ο μάρτυς και πιστός, ο πρωτότοκος των νεκρών, και ο άρχων των βασιλέων της γής. Αυτός που …μας λύνει από τις αμαρτίες μας με το Αίμα Του.» (Αποκ. 1, 5)  «Ότι υπάρχει ένας Θεός, και ένας μεσίτης του Θεού» (1 Τιμ. 2, 5) «Επειδή έχουμε μέγα αρχιερέα, που διήλθε τους ουρανούς, τον Ιησού, τον Υιό του Θεού, ας κρατήσουμε την ομολογία μας.» (Εβρ. 4, 14)

Η ομολογία μας ειναι η Ευχή, η οποια υποστηρίζεται απο στοίβες Αγίων Γραφών, η οποία περιέχει τόμους Ορθόδοξης θεολογίας, και μεγάλη δύναμη. Δεν ήταν απλά κάποιος τυχαίος «κύριος», ούτε ο Μωάμεθ, ούτε ο Αλλάχ, ούτε ο Βούδας, ούτε ο Βράχμα, ούτε κάποια άλλη θεότητα η οποία θανατώθηκε για εμάς και έθραυσε τις πύλες του Άδου (της κολάσεως).  Μόνο ο σταυρωθείς Κύριος Ιησούς κατέστρεψε την ισχύ της Αμαρτίας και του Θανάτου, αλλά και το κράτος του Σατανά.  Για αυτό ακριβώς τρέμουν οι δαίμονες με το όνομα Ιησού.  Για αυτό οι Γέροντες της Αγίας Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας αδιαλείπτως προσεύχονται την Ευχή – για να απωθήσουν δαιμονικούς πειρασμούς και πνευματικές επιθέσεις, καλλιεργώντας ταπείνωση και ασταμάτητα καλώντας το όνομα του Ιησού.

Το να εκτοπίσουμε το όνομα του Ιησού, κρατώντας μόνο τον αόριστο όρο «κύριε», ενισχύει αρκετές απειλές που μπορούν εν συνεχεία να φθείρουν την Ορθόδοξή μας πίστη και ταυτότητα, και να θέσουν σε κίνδυνο την σωτηρία μας:

Πρώτον, η νεωτεριστική προσευχή προωθεί τον παγανιστικό και πολυθεϊστικό Οικουμενισμό, ο οποίος για πολλά χρόνια εστιάζει την προσοχή του αποκλειστικά σε «κοινά σημεία», με σκοπό την εξάπλωση ενός είδους «αγάπης» η οποία αγνοεί τις διαφορές και την Αλήθεια.  Το «σε ευχαριστώ, σε δοξάζω, κύριε ελέησόν με» αποτελεί μια ουδέτερη προσευχή η οποία μπορεί με ευκολία να ειπωθεί από οποιονδήποτε Jain, εβραίο, ινδουιστή, ζωροαστρικό, μουσουλμάνο, η και οποιονδήποτε ειδωλολάτρη η εωσφορολάτρη.  Αυτή η προσευχή δεν είναι μόνο ανορθόδοξη, αλλά και μη Χριστιανική.

Δεύτερον, αφαιρόντας το όνομα του Ιησού, καθιστά αντικατάσταση της Ομολογίας Πίστεως με μια Άρνηση Πίστεως. Φοβόμαστε η ντρεπόμαστε ξαφνικά να ταυτοποιούμαστε ως Χριστιανοί με το να λέμε το όνομα του Ιησού;  Η άρνηση της πίστης απειλεί την σωτηρία μας!  Ο Ιησούς είπε «…όποιος Με ομολογήσει μπροστά στους ανθρώπους, θα ομολογήσω και Εγώ εκείνον εις τον Πατέρα μου στους ουρανούς. Αλλά όποιος με αρνηθεί μπροστά στους ανθρώπους, και Εγώ θα τον αρνηθώ στον Πατέρα μου στους ουρανούς» (Ματ. 10, 33-34)

Τριτον, με το να αφαιρούμε το όνομα του Ιησού, χιλιάδες χρόνια ιερών προφητειών, Βιβλικών διδασκαλιών, και Πατερικών δογμάτων απαξιώνονται και ανατρέπονται, αυθαίρετα, και χωρίς εύλογη αιτία.  Αυτό είναι απαράδεκτο, εφ’όσον επιθυμούμε να κρατήσουμε μια Ορθόδοξη ταυτότητα.  Στην Δευτέρα Παρουσία, όταν όλοι αναστηθούν, ακόμη και εκείνοι που ζήσαν πριν από εμάς, θα είναι πολύ δύσκολο να δικαιολογήσουμε – παρουσία του Θεού και των μαρτύρων Του – την οποιαδήποτε ανυπακοή στα λόγια του Αποστόλου Παύλου «διδαχαίς ποικίλαις και ξέναις μη παραφέρεσθε» (μην παρασύρεστε με διάφορες διδαχές οι οποίες είναι ξένες [από την Ορθή]) (Εβρ. 13, 9), ακόμη και εάν αυτές οι παράξενες διδασκαλίες προήλθαν από κάποιον με αξίωμα επισκόπου.  Ας μην ξεχνάμε, ότι ιστορικώς, η πλειονότητα των αιρέσεων που καταπολεμήθηκαν από την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία προήλθαν απο επίμονους επισκόπους!

Σωτηρίου, και όχι μια ακόμη επίθεση εναντίον εκείνων που ακολουθούν την Αγιοπατερική Ορθόδοξη Παράδοση.  Όσοι δεν ενδιαφέρονται για την Ορθόδοξη Παράδοση είναι απολύτως ελεύθεροι να φύγουν και να γίνουν μέλη σε οποιάδηποτε άλλη δικαιοδοσία όποτε το επιθυμήσουν…αλλά εμείς οι πιστοί, ΔΕΝ θα τους ακολουθήσουμε…

Defend the Orthodox Faith or Go Broke

Patriarch and babyThere is something we don’t do often enough, and that is put COVID-19 into generational perspective. We focus on arguments over statistics, masks in Church, endless hand sanitizing, studies proving asymptomatic spread exists or doesn’t, etc. We moralize about loving our fellow man and protecting “the least of these,” all the while our parishes sink deeper into factionalism. In all the caterwauling, we somehow seem to forget that we are facing a real threat to the very future of Orthodoxy in North America. From our obliviousness, the crisis of the Greek Orthodox parishes in Toronto provides a needed wake-up call. That is our topic today, but before we talk about it, please remember these facts:

  • The average age of death from COVID-19 in developed nations is about 80 years, with a median age of about 83 years.
  • The average victim of COVID-19 is older than the average life expectancy.

Out of hysterical fear of a disease that is almost exclusively of serious concern for the very old (who are also relatively easy to protect), we are crippling the future of our children. And not just economically and academically, but their future in the Orthodox Church as well. If the current financial crisis in Toronto in the Greek Orthodox community is any indication, the spiritual legacy we wish to leave to our children is in serious trouble.

Archbishop SotiriosFrom the beginning of Summer 2020, Archbishop Sotirios of the Canadian Greek Archdiocese presented challenges for the Faith and the Faithful by embracing multiple spoons. When met with opposition, the Archbishop mischaracterized, dismissed, and was even occasionally vindictive to the Orthodox Faithful who challenged this innovation. At Orthodox Reflections, we covered all that in its own category which you may find here.  For a general synopsis of the issue, please click here. Archbishop Sotirios has been controversial over other topics as well. Recently His Eminence felt compelled to criticize the Jesus Prayer, an absolute treasure of Orthodox spirituality. What he said in a sermon, and a very good response to his words, can be found at the Mystagogy Resource Center.

The Archbishop was only part of the story, however. In Toronto, the Greek Orthodox Churches are owned and operated by a non-profit known as the Greek Community of Toronto (GCT). In July 2020, following a city inspection on the basis of a single complaint about communion practices, GCT sent the Archdiocese a letter that threatened to close all four Greek Orthodox Churches in Toronto unless the Greek Archdiocese agreed to abide by all guidelines issued by the City of Toronto. Here is part of the letter (emphasis added):

We request from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese to give clear instructions to the four GCT reverend Fathers to suspend giving communion in church, to encourage patrons to keep physical distance and also to refrain from kissing the priest’s hands.

 

In addition, we request confirmation in writing that the priests will follow the guidelines issued by the City of Toronto effective immediately. Otherwise we will be forced to shut down the churches to the public to protect the health and safety of our members and congregants and hold the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese liable for not adhering to all health regulations issued by the City of Toronto and government officials.

The video below shows the utter heartbreak of a faithful and loving Orthodox priest as he announced that he cannot provide Holy Communion based on the order of the City of Toronto (but also based on the threat of the non-profit owner of the church in which he was standing and the fact that his Archbishop chose to  go along rather than fight for the Faith).

A few days later in July 2020, a faithful Greek Orthodox parishioner in the Toronto area penned this letter of warning to the GCT. Some emphasis has been added:

Christ as Eucharistthe Orthodox Faith is not “subject to change” depending on feelings, fears or politics. It has been instituted by the unchangeable and Divine Christ Himself, who is present in the Holy Eucharist which has a 2000 year history of never transmitting illness or disease. If you believe this, it should be “business” as usual for the Greek Community’s churches in Toronto. If you do not believe this, or that the power of the Holy Spirit surpasses that of a virus, please find another way of doing business and stop this unprecedented and unacceptable abuse of the religious beliefs of your faithful patrons.

 

It is my sincere hope that you will align yourself and the Greek Community with what is godly and true and not with what is politically correct. You must realize that Christ, who is “not of this world” instituted a church which is “out of this world.” One cannot run churches according to the law of the land – only according to the will of God. Unless you are prepared to do that, please realize that you are in the wrong business field.

 

Christ, Himself, said, ”you cannot serve God and mammon” Luke 16:13. Therefore, your two choices are simple and clear: you must either run your churches according to Christ, or, forfeit them altogether. There is no in between.

 

I trust that you will think about this and make a decision going forward, because compromising the faith of your patrons, is not an option. It’s not easy being a Christian… Your faithful patrons have made their choice. Now, you must make yours. If you do not, don’t be surprised if your faithful patrons make the choice for you.

Church turned barThe GCT could have stood up for the faith. The Archbishop could have as well. But neither did, and so over the past year many of the Orthodox Faithful of Toronto have made their choice to move on. By not standing strong for the Orthodox Faith, the GCT now finds itself financially imperiled and looking to sell at least one of its properties. If you look below at the list, you will realize that the GCT may actually sell an Orthodox Church building. Since we live in an era when Church buildings are purchased to become bars, skate parks, dance clubs, and even strip clubs – what future awaits for these formerly sacred grounds?

Sadly, the current circumstances have also had a devastating impact on the GCT. Our overall revenues have dropped by over 90%. Our current bank loan is $3.2 million dollars and our total debt is $4.5 million dollars, and we are on target to lose earnings of $2 million dollars by the end of 2021.

 

Given our current economic difficulties, an independent Advisory Committee was formed to explore the best approach to resolving our issue. After much research and deliberation, it recommended the potential sale of at least one of the GCT’s properties. Which would be one of the following:

· St. Demetrios & Polymenakion Cultural Centre (30 Thorncliffe Park Drive)

· St. Irene’s Church (66 Gough Ave (795 Carlaw Ave)

Working closely with our Board, and with the approval of our Members, Cushman & Wakefield will begin soliciting offers on the above properties.

 

It is troubling and very saddening to be in a position that forces us to contemplate selling one of our most treasured assets, but the alternative is considerably worse. We hope you agree and are willing to see this through with us.

 

The very survival of the Greek Community of Toronto hangs in the balance.

Word is that the Greek Archdiocese in Canada is also in financial distress.

Empty Orthodox ChurchWhen the Church and related organizations sound exactly like the world, why bother getting up on a Sunday morning? Many nominal (“cultural”) Orthodox Christians have simply fallen away and taken their donations elsewhere. No dance classes or competitions, no Greekfests – without the cultural attractions, the “Christmas and Easter” crowd has found other uses for their time and money. After all, by being willing to close the parishes and cutoff communion, are you not implicitly telling your members that the Church is non-essential?

Many sincere, faithful Christians have moved on to other Orthodox jurisdictions in Toronto and around Canada. Your country of birth, your last name, your cultural heritage – none of that is going to keep you in a Church that does not teach the fullness of the Orthodox Faith. If you care about your immortal soul, then you will go where it can be best nourished.

ruined orthodox churchThis was entirely predictable, and was, in fact, predicted. Yet, those in charge watched it all burn down and did nothing to stop it until it was too late. Now they are scrambling to save anything they can. Greeks are a proud and capable people. They love their parishes and, as a whole, have prospered in the New World. If they can find themselves in this state, it should serve as a massive warning to the rest of the Orthodox Christians in North America not to be complacent. The Greek Community in Toronto may be the first really prominent financial collapse, but it will assuredly not be the last.

This is not just a Canadian or a Greek problem. A group of OCA priests wrote this on an Orthodox blog about their own bishops’ performance during the COVID “crisis”:

Without the sacramental rudders and moorings of the Church, the OCA bishops were cast adrift, as they tried to navigate the political landscape. They seemingly closed their minds to reason, as they closed the doors of the Church and they wanted no input from the priests fearing it would undercut their point of view.

 

The elevation of a virus to epic proportions, the threat of lawsuits, and the force of the government left the Church utterly depleted and redefined. The bishops folded. She stopped acting like the historical Church she was. She had no strength to take a stand in what could have been the Church’s finest moment in American history, an opportunity to show the whole of America who the Church is and how vitally important she is during extraordinary times. Sadly, she has become that dimly lit candle under a bushel. The Church may never get another opportunity in this country to demonstrate that she is the only hope and stability for mankind.

First, the Orthodox Church in North America has probably never been (overall) more financially fragile and less hospitable to the Faithful, much less inquirers. Second, the demand for authentic Christian Faith has never been greater on this continent. Millions of broken souls are searching for the true Church of Jesus Christ. How these two trends resolve themselves is up to God.

We should all pay attention to what is happening in Toronto.  There but by the Grace of God, more of our parishes, jurisdictions, and ministries may go also. May God have mercy on us all.

A New Twist on the Circus of Spoons

Sometime during the first week of September, the Greek Orthodox priests of Ontario received a secret memo from the Greek Canadian Archdiocese regarding the distribution method of Holy Communion. This memo had no date, was signed by one of the new auxiliary bishops of Canada, his Grace Bishop Athenagoras, and it indicated at the very bottom that the “text is for the use of the Reverend Fathers and the Boards of Directors of our Communities only and not to be disseminated via Social Media.” This is the type of secrecy we have seen before. Furthermore, the memo was to all “Greek Orthodox Communities across Ontario,” which makes it hard to keep a secret.

The memo makes reference to the revised Toronto Public Health Covid-19 Guidance which was issued on August 28, 2020. What does a Toronto Public Health document have to do with all of Ontario? This is a question, which has been asked before of Archbishop Sotirios, and to which an answer is still pending.

The revised document, which once again, is a recommendation and not a law, includes the following:

  • Suspend activities that increase the risk of disease transmission, which include:
  • Touching or close physical contact between people (e.g. hugging, handshaking)
  • Sharing and/or distributing objects and materials (e.g. common chalice, utensils including spoons, plates, receptacles and washing facilities; holy water stoup; books, microphones, prayer mates, prayer shawls, water, chalices, collection/offering plates).

An older Public Health Covid-19 Guidance issued on June 11, 2020 stated, “discontinuing communion is strongly recommended at this time.” This advice is not any different from the advice to suspend the use of a common chalice or spoon – “objects and materials that increase the risk of disease transmission” – in the eyes of a public health department.

However, in the eyes of the Orthodox Church, the Holy Chalice and the Holy Lavida (Spoon) do not increase the risk of transmission, as they are coated in the Body and Blood of Christ. Therefore, this Public Health Guidance does not apply to, and has no place in, the Orthodox Church or mindset. Accordingly, as soon as the lockdown in Toronto ended, all Greek Orthodox churches re-opened and communed the faithful normally for three Sundays in a row, from June 14-28 inclusive. Suddenly, our Archdiocese interrupted our 1,200-year old Holy Liturgical Tradition of using a common spoon. Holy Communion was suspended the following week (Sunday, July 5th) and arbitrarily altered the week after (Sunday, July 12th) by the imposition of the multiple communion spoons. This innovation was followed by the wine-bread, which thankfully did not take effect (at least not yet, for it still may), and now we have yet another innovative change. One may begin to wonder if our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Canada is vying for a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most ecclesiastical innovations in the shortest period of time.

Since the Covid-19 Toronto Public Health Guidance has not fundamentally changed, what, then, has changed? In the memo to the Greek Orthodox Communities across Ontario, the priests and their community councils are now given one of three choices:

  1. Continue with the distribution of Holy Communion with individual Lavides for each parishioner
  2. Proceed with the distribution of Holy Communion with one Lavida for all persons
  3. Give the choice to the parishioners to receive Holy Communion with the same Lavida, or with different Lavides for each one of them

The caveat and closing statement in the memo is:“Whatever choice you make, your Community will be solely responsible for all consequences.”

Christ as EucharistWhile this may seem like a ‘victory’ to some, or at least a step in the right direction, it is in fact, a greater loss. Just when we thought that the Holy Eucharist could not be dishonoured any further than being washed in a sink or disinfected in a vat, our venerable Archbishop has increased the indignity by relegating the Eucharist to the level of a fast food chain. Now, the faithful can choose between a ‘single-spoon church’, a ‘separate-spoon church’ or a ‘single-separate combo church’. Our new heresy, ladies and gentlemen, is Ortho-Protestantism – I will go to the church that suits me and you will go to the church that suits you. While our church leader withdraws, absolving himself of any personal and legal responsibility, he not only continues the heresy and the blasphemy, he also sows new seeds of schism by setting the stage for further conflict and divisions among us, within our own parishes, our communities and even our families. In addition, the Apostasy march towards Ecumenism and a false union with Rome continues. Now that his Eminence has solved the impracticality problem of “too many spoons” during Christmas and Easter with the ‘combo-spoons,’  we can probably expect the multiple spoons to stay in one form or another for the long term, unless we, ourselves, refuse them.

Although some people may welcome these communion “choices”, this is not the type of pastoral leadership the Orthodox faithful need. We do not need a Pontius Pilate who will wash his hands of a litigious threat because he is too afraid of Caesar! Neither do we need someone who divides the Church to improve his popularity at the polls. Nor do we need a hierarch who has suddenly realized that he began his Ecumenist Experiment rather badly and now thinks he should have given the laity a choice from the very beginning, to more accurately estimate just how many will readily follow a false union with Rome or not, when that time comes. Additionally, the droves of Orthodox faithful that left their parishes to commune in other traditional Orthodox churches was palpable, as was the associated drop in church incomes. In the end, money usually does the talking, but the Orthodox faithful need a bishop through whom the Holy Spirit does the talking, not mammon.

Some good news is that in one of the ‘combo’ churches of Toronto, after about a dozen or so parishioners communed with separate spoons, a much larger number of faithful waited until the very end to commune with the One Holy Lavida. Even better news is that at St. Kosmas Monastery in King City, only the single communion spoon was offered. Glory to God for that! Clearly, that should be the only option, for there should be no multiple spoons in any Orthodox Church, and here are the reasons why:

The Mission of the Orthodox Church

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the Orthodox Church is not a democracy or a public opinion forum.  There is no role in the Orthodox Church for fears, likes, dislikes or personal preferences. The Orthodox Church does not adapt or cater to secular laws or people’s individual wishes or concerns. If she did, she would have been secularized and her mission would have been annulled long ago.  The Church makes decisions based on her dogmatic teachings which are the criterion of God’s will. Her singular aim is to lead us to the one and only timeless, constant and unchangeable Truth – God. This cannot be done by catering to the whims and preferences of fearful or doubting individuals. Members of the Orthodox Church are those who, putting the One, True God first and foremost, align themselves to HIS will and not the other way around. Why? Because no man or woman invented Orthodoxy; it was revealed to us by Almighty God, Himself. He is “the author and finisher of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2)

Holy Tradition

Orthodox Icon Last SupperIn his June 15, 2020 article, entitled: “When Holy Communion is Fought by Bishops!” Metropolitan of Piraeus, Seraphim, states that the traditional method of giving Holy Communion with the one common Holy Lavida has been an established part of the Life of the Church for about 1,200 years. Therefore, although this method of distribution has not been specifically addressed by any Ecumenical or local Synod it has become a fundamental element of our Holy Ecclesiastical Tradition. As such, what applies to it is the Holy Scripture reading from St. Paul’s 2 Thessalonians 2:15: “So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.”

By definition, Holy Tradition (Ιερα Παραδοση) is the deposit of faith given by Jesus to the Apostles and passed on in the Church from one generation to the next without addition, alteration or subtraction. Theologian, Vladimir Lossky, described Holy Tradition as “the life of the Holy Spirit in the Church.”

Holy Tradition includes Holy Scripture, the decisions of the Holy Ecumenical Synods, Liturgical Worship and the teachings of the Patristic Fathers. Holy Tradition began as the unwritten teachings of Christ, which were first conveyed orally by the Apostles, and then primarily through sermons and letters written by Bishops and Priests during the first three centuries of Christianity. For example, in his Epistle to the Corinthians, St. Paul writes, “For I delivered unto you first of all, that which I also received.” (1 Corinthians 15:13). St. John the Evangelist writes, “Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink; but I trust to come unto you and speak face to face that our joy may be full.” (3 John 1:13-14). John concluded his Gospel with, “And there are, also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” (John 21: 25)

One clear example of oral teaching in the New Testament is found in Acts 20:35 when Paul addresses the Ephesian elders and says, “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Since Luke, the author of Acts, does not record this saying in his own Gospel, nor does it appear in any of the four Gospels, this is another witness to the sayings of Jesus being transmitted in an oral tradition.

As Christ’s Church grew and evolved, so did the Church’s prayer life, worship, sayings and practices, music, art and architecture. The Divine Liturgy developed from the early Christian worship services. As Christ ordained His Apostles, and as they ordained Bishops, Priests, and Deacons to succeed them, an unbroken chain of Apostolic Succession was formed to the present day, along with Church organization and government. New miracles in the name of Christ took place and new saints witnessed and were martyred for their faith. These events were continuously recorded and engraved in the memory of the Church through the use of art, music and literature to edify future generations. Alongside these, New Testament literature was also written as well as the Creed of Faith and other writings to combat heresies and false teachings. This unbroken, living continuity with the ancient Christian Church can be summed up as Sacred or Holy Tradition. Furthermore, every aspect of Holy Tradition is based on the New Testament Canon, which requires Apostolicity, Catholicity and Conformity as the fundamental basis and foundation for Church authority.

 During the fourth century, Archbishop St. Basil, theologian and scholar, emphasized Holy Tradition’s central importance as follows: “Of the doctrines and injunctions kept by the Church, some we have from written instructions, but some we have received from Apostolic tradition by succession in private. Both the former and the latter have the same force in piety; and this will be contradicted by no one who has ever so little knowledge in the ordinance of the Church. For were we to dare to reject unwritten customs, as if they had no great importance, we should insensibly mutilate the Gospel, even in the most essential points, or rather, for the teaching of the Apostles leave but an empty name.”

If Holy Tradition is the Life of the Holy Spirit in the Church, the practice of the common communion spoon for over 1,200 years has made it a fundamental part of the Life and Holy Tradition of our Church. Any arbitrary innovation to this practice is not only unnecessary, but very wrong, as it cuts to the core of the Faith and endangers the Orthodox Church on many levels. The core of our Faith is the Body and Blood of Christ which was shed and broken for us on the cross, and of which we partake with fear of God, faith and love in order to be united with Him. Without this, we have no Life and no Resurrection or Salvation. “…unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day…” (John 6: 53-54)

The Practice of Holy Communion

Communion spoonDuring the first 800 years of Christianity, the manner of distribution of Holy Communion during Divine Liturgy ‘changed’ (but not really) three times, not because of any problem with the Eucharist, but because of how we would receive it due to our sinful nature. When we received it in the hand or from a tong, we would drop it, spill it, or take it home to do bad things with it. Even before the common communion spoon became a widespread liturgical practice, it was used as early as the 1st century to commune the ill at home who could not take it in the hand and/or sip it from a chalice.

The common communion spoon first became a liturgical practice in Constantinople as early as the 7th century and it was first mentioned as a common liturgical practice in all of Byzantium by the Photian Synod of 867 AD. (Byzantine Communion Spoons, A Review of the Evidence by Robert F. Taft S.J.) Because the first century spoon worked the best for communing the sick, it eventually became widely adopted and has stood the test of time as being the most easily accessible by all – the very young, the very old and the very ill – and the least vulnerable to the abuses of the laity. In other words, taking Holy Communion in a manner which assumes that we are all sick, which we spiritually are, has stood the test of time the longest. Our Holy Orthodox Church has never been averse to modernization or change, provided that the change facilitates her salvific mission and does not deter it. A good example of a salvific modern change is the use of social media or the internet to spread the Gospel.

There are those, including some clergy, who have criticized the practice of the common communion spoon as being ‘archaic’ or belonging in a ‘museum.’ Such people either do not appreciate the spoon’s centuries of success, or they agree with the Ecumenist agenda, which is to alter the Holy Eucharist sufficiently as to facilitate a false union with Rome in the future.

Divine Use Transforms Matter – and Us

Christ at center of communionA new teaching from Father Calivas and Archbishop Elpidophoros, which is now also being promoted by Archbishop Sotirios, endorses that although the Body and Blood of Christ cannot transmit disease, the “tools with which we offer Holy Communion are perishable and earthly” and therefore the Holy Chalice and the Holy spoon may transmit disease. This is a false teaching. When “perishable and earthly” tools are dipped into the Life-giving Body and Blood of Christ, they become holy and sanctified forever by the uncreated energy and Grace of the Holy Spirit which is transmitted to them. For this reason, they can never be used for any other purpose ever again. For this reason also, one must never bring one’s own spoon for Holy Communion and take it back home again. God’s uncreated Grace is transmitted to these sacred vessels just as it is transmitted to the holy relics of the Saints and the holy icons that are windows to paradise. This is why we venerate them – to receive this Grace. Therefore, it is impossible to receive, through any act of faithful worship, viruses and other communicable diseases.

Trial by Fire

The last judgmentMy dear brothers and sisters in Christ, if we receive Holy Communion not believing in the uncreated Grace of God, demonstrating fear of contamination from Him, then we do not receive sanctification and Life; rather, we receive judgement and Death. “…whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have died.” (1 Corinthians 11: 27-30)

“In an unworthy manner” means coming to Christ with hidden immorality, disunity, doctrinal heresy or disorder, failing to see the gifts of God as holy things for holy people. Being worthy does not mean being sinless, but being cleansed, through true repentance and the sacrament of Confession. Worthiness is not legalism but a sincere commitment to walk in righteousness before God. Holiness does not mean perfection. It means putting God above all else.

In Isaiah 6:1-13, the Old Testament prophet experiences the Holy Eucharist in a vision when one of the seraphim touches his lips with a burning coal from the Temple altar, saying “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin is forgiven.” (Isaiah 6:7) Immediately, Isaiah’s misgivings melted away and he accepted the call as a fearless prophet of God. The burning coal symbolizes Christ, whom we receive from the altar. His divine nature is like a fire which consumes our sins and enlightens our hearts. It ignites us with an ardent desire for God and deifies us. However, if we are not worthy of this fire, we become self-condemned, as we eat and drink judgement unto ourselves.

God’s Great Reset

Most of us have heard of the Great Reset and the New World Order which are supposed to usher in the Antichrist. Some believe that these are ‘conspiracy theories’ while others believe that we are at the beginning of the Eschatological Age. According to Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphou, we are not yet living in the time of the Antichrist; we are living in the Time of the Great Test which precedes the Antichrist. Our faith is being tested by the fire of the Holy Eucharist, which has literally become the epicentre of this Great Test. This may just be God’s Great Reset which is preceding any other global plans that secular masterminds may be orchestrating.

Whatever our wayward church officials or world powers may be doing or planning for the future, it is all in vain, because God is the one who is in control here. He is in the process of ‘resetting’ His Holy Orthodox Church by testing its members with the issues that currently surround the Holy Eucharist. Those who pass the test, with fear of God, Faith and Love, be they clergy or laity, shall become ignited members of the Body of Christ who fearlessly confess their faith in the one, true, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Those who fail the test by falling into the temptations of the declining world, by fearing contamination from the Holy Eucharist, and by having a greater esteem for medical science than the Giver of Life – these will fall away through the wide and easy gate of the pan-heresy of Ecumenism.  In this manner, the Orthodox Church will become purged in the Trial by Fire that we are in the process of experiencing now – the Fire of the Holy Eucharist.

Protection TheotokosLet us be of good courage, exercising patience. When God puts His plans into motion, we can be sure that His Church will not only prevail – She will triumph! If we remain faithful and true to Christ, we shall triumph with Her!

Are Greek Orthodox Christians in Canada Fanatics?

St. KosmasIndeed, why won’t Orthodox Bishops, not just in California, but in all of North America, fight for the Church, for Truth, for Christ? After all, did they not commit their whole lives to the Church, to Truth and to Christ?

Not only are they not fighting, but some of them, to justify their passivity, such as Archbishop Sotirios of Canada, even attack the faithful who are fighting by labeling them as “fanatics”. During his Greek sermon on August 24th at the Divine Liturgy that celebrated the feast day of St. Kosmas Aitolos at the Canadian Monastery in King City that bears the saint’s name, Archbishop Sotirios came down hard on the modern day “fanatics” in the Greek Orthodox Church by stating that St. Kosmas, despite his fiery faith, was never a fanatic. He goes on to say that fanaticism stems from arrogance and pride; and pride is the well-spring of every type of sin.

Αλήθεια, γιατί οι Ορθόδοξοι Επίσκοποι, όχι μόνο στην Καλιφόρνια, αλλά και σε όλη τη Βόρεια Αμερική, δεν πολεμούν για την Εκκλησία, για την Αλήθεια, και  για τον Χριστό;  Μήπως, δεν έδωσαν όλη τη ζωή τους στην εκκλησία στην αλήθεια και στο Χριστό;

Όχι μόνο δεν πολεμούν, αλλά  μερικοί από αυτούς, όπως ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος του Καναδά, για να δικαιολογήσουν την παθητικότητα τους,  επιτίθονται στους   πιστούς   χαρακτηρίζοντάς τους ως «φανατικούς». Στο κήρυγμά του, στις 24 Αυγούστου στη Θεία Λειτουργία  του Αγίου Κοσμά του Αιτωλού στο Καναδικό Μοναστήρι στο King City που φέρει το όνομα του αγίου, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος κατέκρινε ως  «φανατικούς» της  σημερινής Ελληνικής  Ορθόδοξης  Εκκλησίας  Χριστιανους, δηλώνοντας ότι ο Άγιος Κοσμάς· παρά την φλογερή πίστη του δεν ήταν ποτέ φανατικός. Στη συνέχεια, λέει ότι ο φανατισμός προέρχεται από την αλαζονεία και την υπερηφάνεια· και η υπερηφάνεια είναι η  πηγή κάθε είδους αμαρτίας.

According to the dictionary, fanaticism is extreme devotion or zeal. Fanaticism often begins with a sudden, dramatic shift in world-view, often due to an overwhelmingly disturbing experience that is not readily explainable using “ordinary” or familiar frameworks. This sounds very much like St. Paul’s Damascus experience which certainly changed his world view. Afterwards, St. Paul certainly displayed extreme devotion and zeal in serving Christ by almost single-handedly Christianizing the entire Greco-Roman Gentile world. Was StPaul a fanatic?

Σύμφωνα με το λεξικό, ο φανατισμός είναι ακραία αφοσίωση ή ζήλος. Ο φανατισμός ξεκινά συχνά από μια ξαφνική, δραματική αλλαγή στην παγκόσμια άποψη, συχνά λόγω μιας εξαιρετικά ενοχλητικής εμπειρίας που δεν μπορεί να εξηγηθεί εύκολα με τη χρήση «συνηθισμένων» ή γνωστών παραδειγμάτων. Όπως λόγου χάριν η εμπειρία του Αποστόλου Παύλου στη Δαμασκό που σίγουρα άλλαξε την θρησκευτική  άποψη που είχε μέχρι τότε. Μετά αυτήν την εμπορία, ο Παύλος  επέδειξε  μεγάλη αφοσίωση και ζήλο υπηρετώντας τον Χριστό, και σχεδόν μόνος του κήρυξε το Χριστιανισμό σε  ολόκληρο τον Ελληνορωμαϊκό κόσμο. ‘Ήταν ο Παύλος  φανατικός;

Book of RevelationsIn Revelations 3:15-16, Christ says to the Church in Laodicea, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” “Hot” and “cold” are metaphors for a passionate commitment to or against Christ. Obviously, Christ wants us to be passionately committed to Him. Isn’t passionate commitment the same thing as extreme devotion or zeal? Is someone who is passionately committed to Christ a fanatic?

Στην Αποκάλυψη  3: 15-16, ο Χριστός λέει στην Εκκλησία της Λαοδίκειας, «Ξέρω τα έργα σου. Ούτε κρύος είσαι, ούτε ζεστός. Θα ήθελα να είσαι είτε κρύος, είτε ζεστός. Αλλά επειδή είσαι χλιαρός και ούτε ζεστός, ούτε κρύος, θα σε ξεράσω από το στόμα μου».  «Ζεστός» και «κρύος» στη προκειμένη περίπτωση σημαίνει μια δέσμευση πάθους προς ή κατά του Χριστού. Προφανώς, ο Χριστός θέλει να είμαστε αφοσιωμένοι σε αυτόν. Η παθιασμένη δέσμευση δεν μπορεί να εξηγηθεί ως το ίδιο πράγμα με την ακραία αφοσίωση ή τον ζήλο;   Είναι φανατικός κάποιος που έχει ζήλο για το Χριστό;

 When Jesus was asked about the most important commandment, He said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” Then he added, “The second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31). Jesus made it simple by breaking down the whole law into two to-dos, but just because something is simple doesn’t mean it’s easy. Jesus showed us how difficult it was to live these laws when He, Himself, loved His Father with all His heart, soul, mind and strength and when He loved us, not as Himself, but more than Himself, by dying a most violent and shameful death on the cross. This act of love was pretty extreme. In fact, nothing is more extreme than the Creator dying for His creation. Sowhen Jesus did thatwas He a fanatic?

Όταν ο Ιησούς ρωτήθηκε για την πιο σημαντική εντολή, είπε: «Να αγαπάς τον Κύριο τον Θεό σου με όλη σου την καρδιά, όλη σου την ψυχή, όλο σου το μυαλό και όλη σου τη δύναμη». Στη συνέχεια πρόσθεσε: «Η δεύτερη εντολή είναι εξίσου σημαντική: Να αγαπάς τον πλησίον σου όπως τον εαυτόν σου. Καμία άλλη εντολή δεν είναι μεγαλύτερη από αυτές» (Μάρκος 12: 30-31). Ο Ιησούς απλοποίησε το νόμο, χωρίζοντάς τον σε δύο υποχρεώσεις, αλλά  αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι επειδή κάτι είναι απλό είναι και εύκολο. Ο Ιησούς μας έδειξε πόσο δύσκολο ήταν να ζούμε αυτό το νόμο όταν Αυτός ο ίδιος, αγάπησε τον Πατέρα Του με όλη του την καρδιά  την ψυχή  το μυαλό και τη δύναμή Του και όταν αγάπησε εμας, όχι σαν τον εαυτό Του, αλλά περισσότερο από τον εαυτό Του, πεθαίνοντας με έναν βίαιο και οδυνηρό  θάνατο στο σταυρό. Αυτή η πράξη Αγάπης ήταν ακραία. Στην πραγματικότητα, τίποτα δεν είναι πιο ακραίο από τον Δημιουργό να πεθαίνει για την ίδια την  δημιουργία Του.  Ήταν ο Χριστός φανατικός όταν το έκανε;

Furthermore, Jesus invites us to take up our cross and follow Him. Is He inviting us to be fanatics too? Well, if a fanatic, according to the definition, is someone with extreme devotion or zeal, then the answer must be yes, He is inviting us to be that way and He actually prefers us that way. Those of us who do love Christ with all our heart, soul and mind, or at least try to, have no problem being fanatics for Him; but Archbishop Sotirios has a big problem with it. His problem with it is big enough to arbitrarily redefine a fanatic as someone with extreme arrogance or pride, even though there is no such description in the definition of the word.

Επιπλέον, ο Ιησούς μας καλεί να σηκώσουμε τον σταυρό μας και να τον ακολουθήσουμε. Μας καλεί να είμαστε και φανατικοί; Εάν  φανατικός, σύμφωνα με τον ορισμό, είναι κάποιος με ακραία αφοσίωση ή ζήλο, τότε η απάντηση πρέπει να είναι «ναι». Ο Ιησούς μας καλεί να είμαστε έτσι και μάλιστα μας προτιμά έτσι. Όσοι από εμάς πράγματι αγαπάμε τον Χριστό με όλη μας την καρδιά, την ψυχή, το μυαλό και την δύναμή μας, ή τουλάχιστον προσπαθούμε, τότε δεν έχουμε  κανένα πρόβλημα να είμαστε και να λεγόμαστε φανατικοί γ’Αυτόν. Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος, όμως έχει μεγάλο πρόβλημα με αυτό το γεγονός και αυτή την αλήθεια.  Το πρόβλημά του είναι τόσο μεγάλο που αυταρχικά δίνει άλλη έννοια  και χαρακτηρίζει φανατικό κάποιον με υπερβολική αλαζονεία ή υπερηφάνεια, παρόλο που δεν υπάρχει τέτοια περιγραφή στον ορισμό της λέξης.

Of course, someone who has extreme devotion or zeal can be a fanatic for good, or a fanatic for evil. I can certainly understand how a fanatic for evil can have arrogance or pride, but if St. Paul and Christ, Himself, were fanatics for good (by definition of the word), is Archbishop Sotirios characterizing St. Paul and Christ (just to name a few Christians who gave their lives for us and for the faith) as arrogant and proud?

Φυσικά, κάποιος που έχει υπερβολική αφοσίωση ή ζήλο, μπορεί να είναι φανατικός για το καλό ή φανατικός για το κακό.  Μπορώ σίγουρα να καταλάβω πώς ένας φανατικός για το κακό μπορεί να έχει αλαζονεία ή υπερηφάνεια, αλλά αν ο απόστολος Παύλος και ο Χριστός ο ίδιος, ήταν φανατικοί για το καλό (εξ ορισμού της λέξης), τότε ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος (έτσι για να ονομάσουμε μερικούς  Χριστιανούς  που έδωσαν τη ζωή τους για εμάς και για την πίστη μας)  χαρακτηρίζει τον απόστολο Παύλο και τον ίδιο τον Χριστό ως αλαζόνες και υπερήφανους!

Ιn his sermon on August 24th, Archbishop Sotirios, praises those Greeks who gave their lives to end the tyranny of the Turks in order to support freedom, Hellenism and the Orthodox Church; but interestingly, he does not label them as fanatics. Did these people who willingly died not have extreme devotion and zeal for what they were fighting for? Of course they did! But if they were not fanatics, what were they?

Στην ομιλία του στις 24 Αυγούστου, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος, επαίνεσε εκείνους τους Έλληνες που έδωσαν τη ζωή τους για να τερματίσουν την τυραννία των Τούρκων με το αποτέλεσμα να υποστηρίξουν την ελευθερία, τον Ελληνισμό και την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία. Είναι όμως αρκετά ενδιαφέρον  ότι  ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος  δεν τους χαρακτηρίζει  ως φανατικούς.  Αυτοί οι άνθρωποι που πρόθυμα πέθαναν δεν είχαν ακραία αφοσίωση και ζήλο για αυτό που αγωνιστηκαν;   Φυσικά και είχαν!   Αλλά, αν δεν ήταν φανατικοί, τότε τι ήταν;

Very simply, when someone has extreme devotion or zeal which is to our benefit, we call them a hero. However, if their extreme devotion or zeal is not to our advantage, we call them a fanatic! “Fanatic” is a dirty modern-day word that implies disruptive, destructive, unreasonable, and extreme; but that is not what the word actually means.

Πολύ απλά, όταν κάποιος έχει εξαιρετική αφοσίωση ή ζήλο που είναι προς όφελός μας, τους αποκαλούμε ήρωες.  Ωστόσο, εάν η ακραία αφοσίωση ή ο ζήλος τους δεν είναι προς όφελός μας, τους αποκαλούμε φανατικούς!  Φανατικός είναι μια βρώμικη σύγχρονη λέξη που υπονοεί το επαναστατικό, το καταστροφικό, το παράλογο, και το ακραίο, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα η λέξη δεν σημαίνει αυτό.

Because our extreme devotion and zeal to Christ is preventing us from doing the bidding of Archbishop Sotirios and taking Holy Communion with multiple spoons; because we are not obedient to this heresy, and instead, we are obedient to Christ, it suits his Eminence to bully us into obedience by brandishing his multiple spoons while calling us fanatics; or to shame us into obedience by calling us arrogant.

Επειδή η ακραία αφοσίωση και ο ζήλος μας προς τον Χριστό μας εμποδίζει να εκτελέσουμε την θέληση του Αρχιεπίσκοπου Σωτήριου και να πάρουμε την Θεία Κοινωνία με πολλά κουταλάκια, επειδή δεν είμαστε υπάκουοι σε αυτήν την αίρεση, αλλά αντίθετα, είμαστε υπάκουοι στον Χριστό, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος μας πιέζει και μας καλεί σε υπακοή και μας αποκαλεί φανατικούς ή μας ντροπιάζει καλώντας μας αλαζονικούς.

He then continues his masterful mind game by chastising our so-called arrogance. He refers to the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, and compares us to the Pharisee who puts himself and his self-righteousness above everyone else, to the point that God should be obligated to him for being so good, rather than the Pharisee being obligated to God. These are his words.

Εν το μεταξύ συνεχίζει το φανταστικό παιχνίδι του μυαλού του με το να μας μαλώνει για την δήθεν λεγόμενη αλαζονεία μας. Αναφέρεται στην παραβολή του τελώνου και Φαρισαίου, και μας συγκρίνει με τον Φαρισαίο που βάζει τον εαυτό του και τη δική του δικαιοσύνη πάνω από όλους τους άλλους, στο σημείο ότι ο Θεός πρέπει να είναι υποχρεωμένος  σε αυτόν που είναι τόσο καλός, παρά ο Φαρισαίος να είναι υποχρεωμένος στον Θεό.  Αυτά λέει ο Αρχιεπισκοπος.

It is sad beyond any words that his Eminence, has arbitrarily imposed multiple communion spoons so easily without any attempt to clarify any laws against Holy Communion, (which do not exist), or to pacify any local public health authorities. It is horrifying to hear him preach that St. Kosmas would partake of the multiple spoons if he were alive today. It is disappointing that he persists in misinterpreting the canon regarding the vessels people would bring to the church to receive the Body of Christ, by which manner he continues to deliberately confuse the faithful. It is frightening that he has dared to elevate himself above the synod of our Patriarch; above the instructions of the Patriarch, himself, not to not deviate from the single spoon; above the Canadian national and state laws which do not interfere with our communion methods, thereby creating his own communion laws; above past Holy Ecumenical Synods; above Holy Tradition; above the words of St. Paul who said, “stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter” (2 Thessalonians 2:15); and even above Christ Himself, by trying to convince us that although the Body and Blood of our Lord cannot transmit disease, the Holy Lavida and the Holy Chalice can contaminate us even while coated by the Holy Eucharist – something which has not happened during any plague in 2000 years!

Δεν υπάρχουν λέξεις να εξηγήσουν πόσο λυπηρό είναι  ότι ο Σεβασμιότατος , έχει επιβάλει αυταρχικά πολλά κουταλάκια Κοινωνίας τόσο εύκολα χωρίς καμία προσπάθεια να ξεκαθαρίσει και να ξεδιαλύνει νόμους που υποτίθεστε είναι  κατά της Θείας Κοινωνίας (που στην αλήθεια δεν υπάρχουν), ή να καθησυχάσει τοπικές αρχές δημόσιας υγείας. Είναι πραγματικά τρομακτικό να τον ακούμε να δηλώνει ότι ο Άγιος Κοσμάς θα έπαιρνε Θεία Κοινωνία με τα πολλαπλά κουταλάκια αν ήταν ζωντανός σήμερα. Είναι απογοητευτικό που επιμένει να παρερμηνεύει τον κανόνα σχετικά με τα δοχεία  που παλιά έφερναν οι άνθρωποι στην εκκλησία για να λάβουν το Σώμα του Χριστού, με τον τρόπο που συνεχίζει να προκαλεί εσκεμμένα σύγχυση στους πιστούς. Είναι τρομακτικό που τολμάει να υψώσει τον εαυτόν του πάνω από τη σύνοδο του Πατριάρχη μας· πάνω από τις οδηγίες του Πατριάρχη, που ο ίδιος έχει δώσει την ξεκάθαρη εντολή να μην παρεκκλίνει από τη μια λαβίδα· πάνω από τους εθνικούς και κρατικούς νόμους του Καναδά που δεν παρεμβαίνουν στις μεθόδους κοινωνίας μας–έτσι δημιουργώντας τους δικούς του νόμους κοινωνίας· πάνω από τις προηγούμενες Ιερές Οικουμενικές  Συνόδους· πάνω από την Ιερή Παράδοση· πάνω από τα λόγια του Αποστόλου Παύλου, ο οποίος είπε:  «Άρα ουν, αδελφοί, στήκετε, και κρατείτε τας παραδόσεις ας εδιδαχθήκατε είτε δια  λόγου είτε δι’ επιστολής ημών» (2 Θεσσαλονικείς 2:15) · και ακόμη πάνω από τον ίδιο τον Χριστό, προσπαθώντας για να μας πείσει ότι παρόλο που το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Κυρίου μας δεν μπορει να μεταδώσει ασθένειες, η Αγία Λαβίδα και το Άγιο Δισκοπότηρο μπορούν να μας μολύνουν αν και επικαλύπτονται από την Θεία Κοινωνία,  κάτι που δεν έχει συμβεί ακόμη και κατά τη διάρκεια μίας πανούκλας  πανδημίας σε 2000 χρόνια!

Who, then, is the arrogant Pharisee? Who is the disruptive, destructive, unreasonable and extreme fanatic who has more confidence in his own misplaced judgement, rather than the power of God in the Holy Eucharist? If, rather than imposing the multiple spoons, Archbishop Sotirios had spent half as much of his time and energy emulating the Greek freedom fighters whom he admires so much, by fighting for the Orthodox Church, for Truth and for Christ, then everyone would be united as one family, no one would call him ANAXIOS and everyone would call him “father,” as he says he wishes to be called in his sermon. I feel certain that he would like very much to be called an AXIOS father, but one must first be AXIOS and behave as a father to be called as such.

Ποιος, λοιπόν, είναι ο αλαζονικός Φαρισαίος; Ποιος είναι ο αποδιοργανωτικός, καταστροφικός, παράλογος και ακραίος φανατικός που έχει περισσότερη εμπιστοσύνη στη δική του λανθασμένη κρίση, παρά στη δύναμη του Θεού δια μέσου της Θείας Κοινωνίας; Αν, αντί να επιβάλει τα πολλαπλά κουταλάκια, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Σωτήριος, είχε ξοδέψει το μισό από τον χρόνο του και ενέργεια εξομοιώνοντας τους Έλληνες μαχητές της ελευθερίας που θαυμάζει τόσο πολύ, για να παλεύει για την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία, για την Αλήθεια και για τον Χριστό, τότε όλοι θα ήταν ενωμένοι ως μία οικογένεια, κανείς δεν θα τον ονόμαζε ΑΝΑΞΙΟ και όλοι θα τον αποκαλούσαν «πατέρα», όπως λέει ότι επιθυμεί να κατονομάζεται στο κήρυγμα του. Είναι  σίγουρο ότι θα ήθελε πάρα πολύ να ονομαστεί άξιος  πατέρας , αλλά πρώτα πρέπει να είναι AΞΙOS και να συμπεριφέρεται ως πατέρας για να ονομάζεται έτσι.

Someone should tell Archbishop Sotirios that an AXIOS father fights for the Church and not against the Church. Someone should remind him that the Church is the Body of Christ and the Body of Christ is US, the laity. He should therefore, fight for US. An AXIOS Orthodox father becomes the ultimate example of obedience and humility and does not try to impose these virtues on others in order to control and manipulate them, because these are demonic methods that do not work on those who have put on Christ. Those who have put on Christ know right from wrong and cannot be fooled by Machiavellian manipulations and lies. A true Bishop teaches by example and not by force. He teaches with love and not with insults.

Κάποιος πρέπει να πει στον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Σωτήριο ότι ένας ΑΞΙΟΣ πατέρας  παλεύει για την Εκκλησία και όχι ενάντια της Εκκλησίας. Κάποιος πρέπει να του υπενθυμίσει ότι η Εκκλησία είναι το Σώμα του Χριστού και το Σώμα του Χριστού είμαστε ΕΜΕΙΣ, ο λαός και οι πιστοί. Πρέπει λοιπόν να αγωνιστεί για ΕΜΑΣ. Ο ΑΞΙΟΣ Ορθόδοξος πατέρας γίνεται το απόλυτο παράδειγμα υπακοής και ταπεινότητας και δεν προσπαθεί να επιβάλει αυτές τις αρετές σε άλλους για να τις ελέγξει και να τις χειριστεί, γιατί αυτές είναι δαιμονικές μέθοδοι που δεν λειτουργούν σε αυτούς που έχουν φορέσει τον Χριστό. Εκείνοι που έχουν φορέσει τον Χριστό ξέρουν το σωστό από το λάθος και δεν μπορούν να ξεγελαστούν από Μακιαβελικούς χειρισμούς και ψέματα.  Ένας αληθινός επίσκοπος διδάσκει με παράδειγμα και όχι με βία, με Αγάπη και όχι με προσβολές.

Protection TheotokosIt seems that his Eminence and his Bishop peers who will not fight for the Church, all need a refreshing example of a Bishop who does fight. This example will be provided very soon. I hope to God it makes a difference and brings them back from their indifference and their apostasy.

Q&A Toronto Update – Part II

To recap, our Q&A Tour regarding the infamous multiple communion spoons began in Toronto on July 19th 2020 at the doors of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. During this peaceful vigil, eight people, including his Eminence, Archbishop Sotirios, MPP Christina Mitas and members of the Greek Orthodox laity, met inside to achieve a better understanding as to how and why the multiple communion spoons were imposed in Ontario by the Archdiocese.

During this meeting, his Eminence admitted that his decision to proceed with the multiple communion spoons followed a telephone call with Public Health officials and/or government officials, but that he did not have any written communication of any kind from any level of government or public health office regarding our Communion practices. He even invited the people present at this meeting, to produce such a letter, something which, as a Hierarch of the Church, many would argue was his responsibility prior to imposing such a drastic change to our Communion practice. It can also be argued that a venture to produce such a letter would lead to (what his Eminence already knew) a ‘wild goose chase’ since such a letter would be in direct violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and therefore could not, and did not, exist.

Afterwards, MPP Mitas addressed the crowd and confirmed what many already knew, that there was no Ontario Provinical Law that interfered with Holy Communion practices. However, under the Emergency Act, authority was given to each individual jurisdiction and local public health unit of Ontario to act accordingly. Therefore, MPP Mitas also promised to request an FOI (Freedom of Information) from City of Toronto’s Mayor John Tory that would clarify the City’s legal position and power regarding Communion practices in Toronto.

In actual fact, all Greek Orthodox churches in Ontario had resumed the practice of Holy Communion with the single communion spoon for three Sundays in a row in June while the Emergency Act was still in effect and despite a City of Toronto recommendation that communion services should be fully suspended in all churches. Our communion practice came to an end after someone (we still don’t know who) complained about it to Toronto Public Health. The complaint was followed by a visit to Toronto’s St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church by a public health inspector, at least one phone call between his Eminence Sotirios with a public health and/or government official, no Holy Communion on July 5th, multiple spoons on July 12th and phase I of the Q&A Tour at the doors of the Archdiocese on July 19th, 2020.

Since that time, frustrated Orthodox laity have been trying to get the promised FOI from the City of Toronto with no success. This is not surprising for the following reasons:

First, any written legislation (which is very different from written advice, recommendation or guidance) that interferes with any group’s religious beliefs or practices would be opposed to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This would be cause for litigation at a Supreme Court level and no level of government would want to be involved in such a thing or even appear to violate the religious freedoms of any group, especially in Ontario which is the most ethnically diverse province in Canada. Therefore, the Provincial government washed its hands clean of any such potential problems by giving the local jurisdictions special authorities under the Emergency Act.

Second, the City of Toronto itself, is by far the most ethnically diverse city in all of Canada, and would never want to be viewed as racist or biased against any group’s religious practices. This would be a very bad political move at any government level. Therefore, no local jurisdiction would legislate any changes to anyone’s worship practices. In other words, the local jurisdictions also washed their hands clean of any such potential problems by exerting their authority under the Emergency Act only so far as providing advice, recommendations or guidance, but no form of legislation of anyone’s worship practices was generated or can be enforced as such.

In this manner, any complaints regarding the Province’s Emergency Act are dealt with as follows: If the complaint goes to the Province, the Province redirects the complainant to their local jurisdiction to which special authority was given. If the complaint goes to the local jurisdiction, that office points to the authority given to them by the Provincial Emergency Act. From a liability perspective, it’s a no fault system, but the bottom line is that there is no legislation that requires the use of multiple communion spoons. There is, however, an implicit threat, and this is the premise under which his Eminence Sotirios continues to justify his broad multiple communion spoon imposition.

So, what transpired with our requests to get an FOI? Here is the first email chain which has protected the identity of the parishioner who started it:

I do not understand the rules and procedures and I am not even sure that Mr. Thompson owes me a reply.However, having read Councilor Thompson’s profile, I cannot imagine anyone more qualified to advise me on the situation that is causing so much strife in my own small community. If a recipient of the Bob Marley Lifetime Achievement Award cannot help…

In summary, this first attempt was derailed with the excuse that Councillor Thompson’s office was experiencing a staff shortage and therefore could not provide an FOI which according to my understanding, is the right of any Canadian Citizen to obtain. This office was too busy to address someone’s rights which implies that they did not wish to deal with this matter at all.

I should have been more clear in my email to you. Though these are not laws as we traditionally define them, they are recommendations that are enforceable by Public Health. If someone would contract COVID-19 at your church due to the practice of communion, or if a parishioner would call Public Health due to your church practicing communion, then Public Health would have to investigate. The Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health has brought forward these recommendations and has asked that Public Health Boards municipally follow suit.I do hope this clarifies things. I know it is hard however the more we do our best to stop the spread, the quicker we can get back to the way things were in our places of worship pre COVID.

God Bless you and thank you for your email. As I man of faith I completely understand your frustration and inquiries.The suspension of communion is a recommendation from Toronto Public Health. Though the emergency order has now been suspended, the Ontario Government is still asking all Ontario residents to take their direction from their local municipal health boards. It is my understanding that these recommendations apply to stage two. I did speak with Toronto Public Health last week and they are waiting to hear from the provincial government on any changes that need to take place to these recommendations.As for this question, again, these are recommendations and not laws. They are to assist in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

I hope you are keeping well and I am very grateful for the updates you email to me, each of which I read from beginning to end. I have been living in Ward XXXX since 1992 and I thank you for keeping me informed.

I have a question about worship, as it specifically pertains to Holy Communion. I understand from previous recommendations or guidelines, that the City of Toronto recommended a suspension of all Holy Communion in the churches of Toronto. I would greatly appreciate it if you could please answer the following questions for me:

Was the suspension of Holy Communion in Toronto a law or a recommendation/guideline/advice?

If it was a law, does it apply to stage 2 or stage 3 of our re-opening or both?

Does the City of Toronto have the right to use the Emergency Act to proclaim such a law?

Please note that my church and co-parishioners regard worship, and specifically Holy Communion as an “essential” service. We are disappointed and upset that our religious rights and freedoms have not been upheld according to the Charter of Rights, to the same extent as other rights and freedoms, such as the right to eat at a restaurant or go to a city park for example. We want our Councilor and our Mayor to understand and acknowledge the importance of worship, especially during difficult times, and if there is a second wave and a second lock down we do not want our worship services, which include Holy Communion to once again be relegated as non-essential. One cannot take Holy Communion virtually.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would give this matter your highest priority by responding to my three questions above.

The parishioner who generated the second email chain did telephone the Toronto Public Health Covid-19 Hotline and the summary of the discussion was as follows: Public Health and local government do not police individual churches. Only if there is a Covid-19 case which is traced back to a church, or if someone complains to public health regarding any church, then a public health inspector would investigate that church. If it was found that the Covid-19 case or the complaint was related to the communion practices of that church, or any other practices of that church, then measures would be taken at the discretion of the public health inspector. The individual on the phone could not specify what type of measures would be taken and indicated that these would depend on the individual situation. However, the first measures that would be taken include a visit/inspection by public health to the local church in question, followed by public health “education” at that church.

This parishioner asked specific questions regarding church closures or fines, but the response that was repeated was again, first a visit by a public health inspector, followed by education. After that, if the church failed to comply with the recommendations, the “measures” taken would be individually determined. In other cases where some Greek Orthodox churches in Toronto were found to be above their 30% capacity, those churches where closed by the City the following Sunday but reopened the Sunday after that – a small price to pay, in my opinion, in comparison to desecrating a Holy Communion practice. As indicated in the second email chain, such measures are enforceable by public health, not the government or the police.

In conclusion, therefore, when someone complained to Toronto Public Health regarding the communion practices of Toronto’s Greek Orthodox St. Demetrios Church, prompting a public health inspection, the issue raised only involved that church and not all Greek Orthodox churches of Toronto, of Ontario or of Canada. In addition, when any church is reported to public health for any reason, the first response is an inspection and the first intervention that may follow is education, NOT indefinite church closures or fines, as the Orthodox laity were misled into believing by the Archbishop and some clergy of the Greek Orthodox Church of Canada.

When that someone complained to public health about the communion practices at St. Demetrios, Archbishop Sotirios, could have dealt with the issue locally and pastorally instead of immediately imposing a province-wide multiple communion spoon practice. The possible reasons as to why he did so, have been discussed elsewhere, but this second part of our Q&A Tour strongly indicates that the Orthodox laity in Canada were misinformed, misled and mistreated, not by any level of government or public health office per se, but by our own hierarch. Some say that the Covid-19 crisis has been too good of an opportunity for his Eminence to miss, for the furthering of another agenda. Some even say that the complainant was someone from within the Archdiocese.
